Too COLD!!!

I didn't fish yesterday but I have gone out on many cold mornings! I remember the one day me and my buddy walked out about a 1/2 mile and hand drilled our holes and set up those stiff Shappell portables. Then the portables got so fogged up just from breathing till the heaters finally kicked in.

Still when its that cold it makes it a little harder to enjoy it unless the fish cooperate and that heater is at least keeping you somewhat warm. But once you get out their and get the thing warm I don't mind.... Usually the cold makes me stay out longer just cause I dread taking it all down again!

I was out friday and loved it. my nose and finger tips were cold but I didnt put up the shack for a few hours. once I realized I had a snot-cicle hanging off my nose I decided to put the shack up over the best hole I had found. fired up the buddy and just being out of the wind was a huge help.

didn't go out yesterday, but plan to go out this evening.

proper clothing can make all the difference.

It was -19 at the lake this morning. It was the first time on the ice for myself this season. I stayed in the Otter until the sun came up. By about 9:30 it was warm enough for me to start hole hopping.

There was a foot of clear ice and about 2 inches of smutchs with little snow on top. I was pretty surprised to find that much ice! There where smaller vehicles traveling on the ice. I'll probably wait until nest weekend to drive out. There's plenty of good fishing that's easily to walk to. A little exercise never hurt anyone! shocked

With the barometric pressure as high as it is, it doesn't make it worth it for me to go out in the brutal cold. Likely would mark fish without getting them to bite much, so better off just waiting and keeping the wife happy until the good conditions arrive.

Yep, we only get some many permission slips for fishing from the other half. So, sometimes it is better to wait and use them on the nice warm days when you can hole hop. I love being outside and walking from hole to hole. But when it's too cold and you do is make nice perl necklaces out of your line.

I went out yesterday and it was cold. I don't mind it so much if I was driving out, but I pulled my portable and gear out. My hands hurt pulling the stuff back. Fishing wasn't great, I caught only one sunny, but they were playing with the bait. But still, I did get to go out for the first time so it was great. There are only so many days that you can ice fish, so if I have a chance to go I will go.

Like mentioned before, we fish when we can, so weather doesn't stop us. But...Just back from Red -39 yesterday morn, truck wouldn't start, 4-wheeler wouldn't start, generator ran out of gas in the night and wouldn't start, and the propane froze up (regulator ). Had to repeat all over again this morn. Anyone know how to keep the propane flowing when so cold. We were in a perm. and the propane cannot be inside without rerouting the hose and making new connections. We ended up putting a sunflower heater by the tanks and a big bin/tub over the tanks/regulator to capture some heat with out blowing us up, to keep the gas flowing. I was thinking of a heat tape around the regulator?

I was inside my perm all weekend on mille lacs I have my tanks in a dog house so they stay warm enough and you have to by a dodge so they start or just go out there every 5 hours and run your truck. The only proplem I had was my stupid holes kept freezing and I bought 5 gallon buckets and cut the bottom out but that only help all but 2 of the holes so I just did not use them holes. But other than that I burned alot of propane and did not catch a thing other than a bottle bass.

Fished all three days this weekend. Fish bit well given the conditions. Caught my biggest sunfish, bass and pike of the year this weekend. Another plus of the cold is that it keeps most people off the lake. I had the lake nearly all to myself for three straight days! Bring on more cold!!!!

I was out Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. I went out all three afternoons and came back well after dark each night to one of my favorite metro lakes. I walked out, about 1/4 mile from the vehicle. I dressed well - layers, good thermal baselayers, good boots, and a face gaiter. It was nice to have something to keep the wind off my face.

But yes, it was still pretty cold, but thankfully not a lot of wind. My holes were freezing back up before I could drop the transducer to check the depth.

I also put the reflectix in my portable this year and that made a difference. I have a small otter and the buddy heater kept it nice in there on low for the most part (I did have to turn it up once the sun went down).

But it was great out there for the 5 or 6 hours I was out each day. The fishing could have been better, but if you layer right you can take about anything out there. Just be sure to be able to cover your exposed skin.

I've heard pouring a bit of water on the tank will get the pressure back going again. Not too much though.

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
