Chilly clips Wade, brings in former Philly lapdog

Wide receiver Bobby Wade was released by the Vikings on Thursday, a week after agreeing to rework his contract and take a pay cut from $3 million to $1.5 million for this season. Wade also would have then become a free agent at the end of this season.

The Vikings signed wide receiver Greg Lewis to replace Wade. Lewis had been with New England and prior to that was a member of the Philadelphia Eagles.

Lewis, 29, was signed as an undrafted free agent in 2003 by the Eagles out of Illinois. His best season came in 2005 when he started all 16 games, catching 48 passes for 561 yards and one touchdown. He has not caught more than 25 passes in each of the past three seasons. The Patriots acquired him last March along with a 2010 seventh-round pick in exchange for a fifth-round pick in last April's draft.

Lewis made the Patriots' 53-man roster last weekend but then was released in a surprise move. Lewis, who has 127 catches for 1,699 and seven touchdowns in six seasons, is familiar with the Vikings offense and also with coach Brad Childress. Childress was the Eagles' offensive coordinator during Lewis' time with the team and Lewis' greatest production came with Childress in Philadelphia.

Wade was entering his third season with the Vikings and had led the team in receptions in each of his first two years. Wade's role, however, was expected to be drastically reduced with the addition of first-round pick Percy Harvin. Harvin will take over as the Vikings' primary slot receiver this season.

Wade had 107 regular-season catches in two years with the Vikings, including 53 for 645 yards and two touchdowns. Wade also caught three passes for 24 yards in the Vikings' playoff loss to Philadelphia.

1.Berrian

2.Rice

3.Harvin

4.Shaincoe

I see him only as depth to the WR Corp, And I thought I had read he WOULDNT restructure his contract and had been at ends with vikings management. I could be off though

Why would it be a move for the young guys? They could have used the young guys with Wade. What's up with him and his bunk eagle players. I predict he'll try to bring Donovon "Chunky Soup" Mcnabb next year too, that is if he still has a coaching job.

Wade restructured last week to stay. When he did that- Lewis was still with the Pats.

I think they are fairly equal at WR. The reason we did this is because Lewis is a special teams guy. He is on KO and punt coverages. He has returned a few kicks also. Wade didn't do special teams, except punt return and it is looking like the Vikes will use Reynaud on punt returns. He was our 4th or 5th receiver. He was expendable. They are getting a guy who will help on special teams...Which, if he does, is a GREAT thing...Our special teams was anything but the last few years.

Lewis won't help much early at receiver, but I think Harvin was going to get most of the reps in the slot anyways. Lewis can play all the receiver spots, so he is more versatile also.

Hopefully, it is a good move. In looking at it in short- it looks like a move to help the team get better.

This is a good move - Wade restructured his contract after being forced to and would make $1.5 mill this year (down from $3 mill). Probably brought in Lewis at the league minimum so a savings in salary cap of probably $1 mill this year for equal talent and Wade wouldn't be playing any way. Wade is a free agent at the end of this year so he wasn't going to resign anyway with the Vikes.

Isn't Harvin #2 on the depth chart?

Yawn... who cares about Wade to bad we are not in a posistion to cut the other stiffs we have.. We need a miracle trade with Denver to save this futile recieving core.

BB's injury must be worse than we originally thought and hamstrings can be a real long term problem with our only supposed "chuckle" deep threat!

Of course that Injury is Chilli's fault also...LOL!

THE NEWS

The St. Paul Pioneer-Press is reporting that Tarvaris Jackson, not Sage Rosenfels, will be the backup to Brett Favre this weekend. Coach Brad Childress said that the backup could change from week to week.
