Fishhouse cooking ideas

Recommended Posts

We are going to be spending 3 nites in a sleeper in a few weeks. Anybody have any food ideas. We do the sandwiches, burgers and brauts routine but are looking for something different this year. We have cooktops in the houses and are bringing a grill also. Thanks in advance for the ideas!

Good topic, I like to take left over potato dumplings and cut them in to little chunks and slice up an onion and put them in a ziplock bag. Once in the ice house just throw a stick of butter in the pan and fry up the dumplings and onions. This goes best with deer sausage and beer!

Hey SDPROV-

We like to make a pot full of beef stew or chili ahead of time and freeze it. Then when you get to the fish house, just light the stove and let it simmer until your ready to eat.

Just a thought. Have fun.

You like eggs for breakfast? If so.....take a ziplock bag and scramble eggs in it.Add peppers, onions, cheese, cooked meat etc.Bring a pot of water to a boil and put the bags of eggs in.....cook for 12 minutes.....omlets.....my kids love them in the HSOList.

If you have a vacuum sealer you can seal up just about anything including; lasagna, jambalaya, gumbo, soups and stews. I also like bringing a small weber or habachi grill and eating steaks, pork chops shishkabobs....might as well live it up if your staying in a sleeper!

SDPROV, If it's a 19" or larger grill, you could make some pizzas on the grill (frozen and thawed,or homemade). They work very well. Just put them onto a greased foil pizza pan and in 15-20 minutes they're ready to eat. Phred52

I have pre-made hotdishes and put them into foil pans, vacuum seal them and put them into the freezer. Sometimes when I am going fishing I pull one or two out of the freezer (depending on how many people)and take them with, throw them into the oven and bingo!

I have done Pizza, lasanga and garlic bread as well.

They sky is the limit!, Last weekend I had King Crab legs. mmmmmmmm soup, stews, grilling food, This weekend I am doing Ribs, Crab legs, B-fast maybe a soup ( meat on milacs has great soup!) If you have a stove and or oven just plan a meal like you were at home if you plan ahead it works great. I always treat my self to a little better food while fishing

I agree with machohorn. No limit. Just a matter of how much work you want to go through.

New Year's eve we made t-bone steaks with mashed potatoes (instant) and gravy, cracked open a bottle of red wine and enjoyed a high class dinner on the ice before the real drinking started in a bit later.

Every year for our annual trip I pre make a big batch of chilli and bring it with. I just heat it up on the cook top and serve. Really quick and easy as all the mess is dealt with at home.

Chilli is always better when left to soak up its flavor over night so this works great. And what is better after a cold day of fishing then a hot bowl of chilli?

Last year we went to Upper Red right about now, and we precooked some pulled pork. We then just left it in the bag and reheated it in warm water on the cooktop. That was darn tasty........especially after some "beverages" at two in the morning!!!!

Ice King,

Let me piggy back on your idea of the omelet in a bag. While I was a Boy Scout leader we used to start a big pot of water and then do up the omelets in a zip loc baggie, add all the veggies etc and then drop them into the boiling water. They would cook in the bag and the Scouts would eat right out of the bag so there were no plates to clean up. We would use the hot water to make the hot chocolate and then use the remaining hot water for the dish pan to wash up what little dishes we had. Usually only cups and forks. Easy Piesy Japanesey! LOL
