DonBo
Was really excited to get back on the lake after last weekend. Snuck out of work early again Friday and only found one keeper. Saturday was TOUGH for me. One nice one early in the fog and another right at Sunset. All day for two keeper fish. Sunday morning was a bit better, with a limit in the boat by 10:00, but released the last one so I could keep fishing, then spent the rest of the day looking for one more fish that would not come. The ones that found their way into the livewell were nice: With the continued unstable weather, fish remain scattered. They were caught from 7' all the way down to 20'+. Red hooks still seem to be best. Both crawlers and leeches need to be in the boat as certain times they show a definite preference. Sunfish are starting to show up shallow. (so they tell me)
Sinker
Nice Don! Looks like a great trip. I was once again up at our cabin near Hertel but didn't even get the boat out. Spent the time mowing and pruning the trails. Did have a doe with a fawn on the trail-cam, which was nice to see. Have caught some nice 'eyes from shore on the St. Croix River this spring in Hudson but I just can't seem to get on the water up north yet. Next time. muskyvic
Nice work, Donbo. I spent a day on Yellow last weekend. Fishing was awfully slow, but still managed to get a 30" northern and this beautifully marked fat 36" ski in my boat while burning hair. All my fishing is catch and release. Going to try to get out of the city this weekend and pound McKenzie. As always, if you happen to see an Alumacraft Magnum with a big Merc on the back feel free to pull up and say hi. DonBo
Nice fish there musky. Haven't heard of many musky being taken yet this year, but the northers have been very active.
jigginjim
Is pulling cranks a good way to fish for walleye on Big yellow and can little Yellow produce a few? I have a friend with a cabin there, we catch bass or pike.

I have a friend with a cabin there, we catch bass or pike. There's lots of weeds, but those pulling cranks in the basin do okay. Leadline seems to work pretty well.Pretty good action for all species in Little Yellow right now, but you need a pretty small boat to get under the bridge, as water is very high right now. DonBo
The poor weather patterns are sure getting annoying. Was only able to fish a few hours Sunday morning before the gale force winds blew everyone off the lake. Did manage to catch a few eyes in that time though. All fish came from 14-17 FOW. Crawlers were the preferred choice on this particular day. They seem to finally be starting to set up in some type of summer patterns, as most were found holding off the tips of off-shore points, not a scattered as they've been. Looking fwd. to the long weekend coming up.
DonBo
Odd, odd weekend. Friday was an awesome day, not for numbers, but outstanding quality. Biggest for me in a couple years, 24": Hard fighting 16" smallmouth: My personal best 21" smallmouth: We boated a 17" and a 19" walleye along with just a few shorts. A friend brought his family in their boat and they aso caught a 23 incher. Later in the evening I finally caught my limit of eaters in just a very short time, including one nice 19" Pretty much every fish today came on a live bait rig with a crawler on a bright orange "hot hook" in right around 15 FOW. Saturday morning just one 18" found it's way into the livewell before the winds howled, then couldn't catch one more walleye the rest of the weekend. Sunday morning, young Jack fished with me. His family fishes muskies a lot, but he has never targeted walleye. He picked a bad day to accompany me as he kept getting texts from his Mom as they were catching northerns left and right. I could tell he was feeling a bit bad as we were not catching anything, so, we motored to a nearby weedbed and I let him make a few casts. That was all he needed: It was a nice end to a poor morning. mpester
Did you hear me scream at the jerk that almost ran me over at about 9 - 10 AM on Sunday? I had to fire up the motor at the last second and gun it in reverse to keep him from hitting me. I had the anchor down and was able to move far enough for him to miss me by at least six feet - maybe ten. All he said as he went by was "sorry". I could see his face from several hundred yards away so I assume he could see me and was just not paying attention - maybe texting. I got the anchor stuck under something so I was not able to follow him to see why he almost hit me. I was sitting four or five hundred yards out in the middle of the lake on the end of one of the points all by myself. He was in a light colored off white or tan Lund coming from the south shore and heading towards Yellow Lake Lodge. I did not see his boat at the dock when I left. But I sure would like to have a few words with him. He looked a lot like a guy I train dogs with and he owns my dogs half-brother. Sure hope it was not him. The fishing was good on Friday and Sunday for numbers but I only found one keeper walleye for my six year old on Friday. He got some keeper perch as well. Very nice weekend for fishing but I will never forget the guy who tried to run me over. It was very close.
irishwalleye
If he had a dog in the front of the boat he was the same guy that almost hit me in front of Yellow Lake Lodge two weeks ago."sorry, I didn't see you there" was all he could say to me. DonBo
Yeah, there were a bunch of people out this weekend that have no business running a boat out around others. No respect, no clue, no common sense.
mpester
What kind of dog? If it was a chocolate lab, I am really afraid it may have been the guy I know a little from dog training. Was it an off white or light tan Lund that almost hit you? If it was, I wonder if this guy does it on purpose. Maybe he hates people fishing his spots.Wish my in-laws had a place on Yellow rather than Clam. I do not even put my boat in Clam now since the fishing has gone so far down hill - unless you like catching carp - which I do once in a while. DonBo
Musky report? Haven't heard much about musky yet this year, but there's been some dandy northers taken.
math teacher
Fished Yellow last week for the first time. Had the best luck trolling the north side with lead core. Caught 3 nice size crappies and 2 walleyes in one afternoon session. Otherwise alot of small perch when bobber fishing.

I did just okay this weekend pulling Lindy's in 18-21 FOW. All legal size fish taken were nice 18+ inchers.

DonBo
What does "okay" mean numbers wise? For those who want numbers, I probably caught 6 or 8 walleyes, including three keepers on Saturday. Most of the day was MUCH too windy to fish, so these came in no more than 4 total hours on the water. In the mix were a handfull of big sunfish, one crappie and one 17" smallmouth.Sunday morning I caught maybe 4 walleye, all short along with a few big sunnies. Guest
Muskies have been very puzzling for me this year so far. I've caught 6 of them and not a single one was over 30". I saw a bigger fish finally yesterday. I raised it by working a 8" firetiger grandma like a husky jerk. It was about a 40" fish in the south bay. I'm thinking that the bigger fish aren't as active because of the cooler temps we've had this year. I'll be casting for muskies almost every time I'm on the water from now on so I'll let you guys know how good or bad I do.Until then, good luck, have fun and be safe!-Zander
