Biggest high school rivalry in Minnesota

I'll second Roseau-Warroad. Neighboring towns, both of them being hockey powerhouses, and both of them having lots of history in the state tournament. It doesn't get any better than that.

Biff - did you see that Elk River- Moorehead section finals game that went 4 OT? I was at that game, probably the best hockey game I've ever seen, high school, college, pro anything. I think the Elk River goalie had over 60 saves. What year was that? 95, 96?

I'll agree the northern rivalries are the best, but how 'bout in town?

Hill Murray and White Bear Lake always seemed to meet in the section final, and it always seemed to go into OT.

Never a dull game, and even reg season games were fun as Aldrich was always packed.

The Duluth Cathedral teams of the late 60's against the world.. They played as an independent against anyone in the state then went on to win I think it was 4 catholic state championships. They would play Duluth East and fill the Arena over 5000 people. Unheard of for high school hockey then.

edina and tonka

jefferson and burnsville

those were two powerhouse rivalries in the late 80's early 90's. Growing up in the metro, the jaguars were the dream team to beat.

I was at that game. I didn't go to many games in high school because I played basketball but that game was at St. Cloud State and there was no room to stand or sit. I can't remember what year that was. Maybe 1994 because I was in 9th grade when it happened. Great game.

Greenway-Grand Rapids Two schools whose students are neighbors and rivals, the kids often knew the guys on the other bench at least by reputation. Big School Small School, Rich hockey tradition dating back decades for both, Plus it is on Da Range.

Only thing is greenway hasnt really been able to compete with grand rapids the last couple years. Speaking of Cec duluth east that game is coming up next thursday. East got beat by white bear in overtime yesterday and Cec beat white bear 3-0 today so that will be a good game. Being from cloquet im gonna have to go with cec. grin.gif

Hey Biff, you know who I am. That was a great game! Do you remember the mascot fight before the game? Remember who that was? LOL smile.gif (not me, but it was a friend of ours)

I'll go with Roseau v. Warroad and Grand Rapids v. Greenway. The Falls, entering their 60th year of high school hockey, played Hibbing recently for the 121st time. The record stands 67-50-4 in favor of the Falls.

I was at the ER-Moorhead game, too. Matt Cullen, now in Charlotte, was a big gun for Moorhead. He had a couple good seasons for St. Cloud State. That night, the Gophers were in town to play SCSU and I was thinking that game would be delayed.
