Lighing a Portable

I was at Kmart the other day and picked up some round tent 23 LED lights that are brighter then you can imagine. They were around 8 dollars. I sat in my garage last night with one of them on in the portable and wow. Check them out. Runs on 4 aa batteries.

I put the besthonLED led lights in my portable. You can run them off of your vexilar or any 12 volt battery. They make it nice and bright. If you search the forums there are quite a few posts about them. Good luck!

Do a search on here for led's, there is a ton of posts on them. I have 2 strands of besthonLED lights and could not be happier with them. Others on here have used them and because of thier reputation I broke down and bought a few strands. They are very bright and use little battery power. The main reason I purchaced them was because I was sick and tired of the drama thats involved in a lantern, the mantles breaking, the smell, the letting it cool before I could put it in my suv, the filling it up and lighting it ... the list go's on and on and now its as simple as hooking a few aligator clips to the flasher and presto.I dont even need to buy batteries because I already have the power source(flasher). hope this helps BT

I agree with him. I had some last year and they just didn't give off enough light. I went to Northern and they have a 48 LED round light that runs on 3 AA batteries for 30 hours. They were on sale for $11.99. 2 of these will light up any portable well enough to even tie knots with. Easy and compact.

My dad bought some last year, a candle is brighter. I paid a little less than $20 shipped a piece for these 30 leds, and they almost blind you on high if you look at them. With them mounted, it's like daylight in my Clam

If you are handy you can also use an LED undercabinet light. Many of these are 12V and need a transformer so you can plug them into a standard 110v wall outlet. I made a bracket that hangs over a cross pole and screwed a quartz version of the under cabinet lights to it and it is like daylight in the flip over. It is a 20w lamp. I rigged it up to see how it would work, but will probably switch to a LED version because of how easily the quarz lamps can be damaged.

I'm with Sandmannd, Best Hong Kong all the way. 48 LED waterproof strip, cheap, very bright, and will run non-stop on a vexilar type battery for a couple of days. No fuses needed, they come ready to connect to a battery.

fishrguy,

I was old school with the ol' coleman lantern for many years, but I got tired of the broken globes and mantles, and changing out empty propane cylinders inside a dark portable. Plus in the long run it's cheaper since the LEDs are not running off propane and run forever on rechargable 12-volts.

Hey GlockWinger, Nice meeting you at the show.

It looked like you were on a mission and didn't have time to talk!

Just a word on your 20 Watt light. It takes 1.6 Amps to light it. A fully charged 7 amp hour gel cell battery will be DEAD in about 4 hours MAX! I think if it's colder it's dead even faster! Halogens are very bright but are real power hogs! LED's basically sip power with many of them taking 100-200 milli Amps. 7AH battery divided by 0.200 Amps = 35 hour run time.

Food for thought.

Ferny.

Has anyone that uses the best hong kong led lights had any problem with them burning out?

I just recieved mine in the mail monday. I got 4 48cm strips. 1 strip has 2 burnt bulbs and and another has 3 burnt bulbs. just wondering if these lights are short lived or something.

I already tried emailing the company and no reply.

Thanks.

    • Sorry to hear that Duff. Will give my GSP's an extra scratch behind the ear for you guys today
    • Aw, man, sorry to hear that.  Shed some tears and remember her well.  They all take a piece of our hearts with them; some more than others.
    • yes sorry for your loss..  our dogs are always special...
    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
