Fluker
Shimano Twinpower MG. This is the Shimano Japan version of the Sustain, but in magnesium. SUPER light. I HATED spinning gear until I found this reel.
Central Bassman
For the price the Shimano Symetre is a great spinning reel. I own a few myself but have starting falling in love with my Quantum Energy PTI. That will be the only spinning reel I buy

ikeslayer
I give a go to the gander reels. They are 20 bucks and i heard from the fishing guy there that they are really pflueger trions. but if i were a rich man probably presidents would be first followed closely by shimano. ike

Fluker
I believe there are 3 levels of reels out there, both spinning and casting. Low, Mid Grade and High. Most manufactures produce something in all levels as there is a market for each.If you fish a lot, those low end reels just won't cut the mustard. You can probably get by with Med, and most folks do. If you can spend the extra dough and get something in the high end range, it really does make a world of difference.I'll use my spinning reels for example. First off, let me start by saying I HATE spinning gear. But there are times when I have to use it. I used to fish Shimano Symetre's. Good reels I would classify in the Mid range. A little on the heavy side and maybe not the smoothest. I then switched to the Twin Powers (Sustains). The differense is amazing. Yes its substantially lighter, the drag is much smoother, etc. However the benefit is during the day, I don't think about the reel and am not frustrated with it. I'm not thinking "I hate fishing this way" anymore. I'm just fishing. This piece of equipment helped me do "my job" better so to speak. Now I'm not saying you have to run out and drop $450 on a Stella. If I could, I would, but I just can't justify putting that kind of coing out for a reel. So what I did is looked for something similar, just as light, and lower in price. The Twin Power MG's run around $300 retail, but you can find some around for as low as $160. In this web wide world, those "high" end reels can be found for you mid range prices. EBass
Stradic, but both are outa comish. Inside the handle the plastic broke on the 2500 and 4000. Shimano is sending out replacement handles free of charge though. So that's cool. All I can tell you is to go to Gander or Cabela's and pick them up and reel a bunch of ones in your price range. The Quatum PTI and Shimano Stradics are really sweet though.

TurnUpTheFishing
Until they upgrade the Stradic Ill be a Symetre guy. Ive played with the supremes and those feel nice. Also I used to not even give quantum a second look (I dont know why) but Im slowly coming around to them. When it comes to spinning reels it seems that the $100 price range is where you start getting some very nice reels... I'm totally impressed with the line lay on this reel. After numerous casts, I didn't even once had to check my line (8lb Fireline Crystal) to tighten it at all to prevent birdnesting. The drag is very sensitive and so smooth, it almost felt like having an active adjustable break system on it. Handle crank power, solid feel, I feel line just gliding, through the guides onto the spool. Makes me wonder why can't I get this kind of reel performance from my Stradic or Sustain...I should be saving for my first boat...
