MUSKIES ATTACK CHILDREN !!!

Recommended Posts

At a WCC Meeting last night I encountered a bonafied Musky Hater . Among other things , he stated that Muskies Attack children . Has anybody been first hand witness to one of these attacks or ever seen photo evidence of any sort ? Does anybody know of any verifiable proof this has ever happened ? I have swam these waters in Wi. & Mn. my whole life as have my friends and kids and have never encountered anything of the sort. I think its folk tales but would still entertain concrete proof of it happening . Anybody ?

I helped patch up a womans finger that got bit. She was laying on the dock dragging her hand back and forth in the water and it got chewed up pretty bad by a "fish". Now I couldn't tell you if it was a musky or the worlds meanest bluegill but she got bit by a fish with large sharp teeth.

I think a fish may strike something mistaking it for a meal but the stories of musky eating dogs, geese, babies, small children and entire fish baskets in one swipe may be folklore. Now to say this guy was a true musky hater, did he happen to have a bumber sticker "Backtroll or bust".

10 or so years ago a kid got bit on the hand by a muskie in the swimming area at Lake Rebecca.

Turned out that fish got in there and couldnt get out. It had nothing to eat, and that kid's hand looked like suitable cuisine.

Not common at all, or anything to be worried about, but it has happened.

I searched that up and it was pretty vague . Said something bit the 11 year old boy but no one really saw what it was . Pike , Musky , 36" Walleye . I don't doubt that it could have happened . Still think drunken boaters and broken beer bottles have caused many more stiches than a hungry Muskie or Northern ever have or ever will .

I agree, your chances of getting but my a muskie are very slim. It probably was a pike on Island lake. I can't believe a guy came all the way to a meeting to argue that one. Some people minds just can't be change no mater how much sence and and logical reasoning you give them. Some ones uncle or a guy at a bar told them something a long time ago and they hold it as fact in spite all other evidence. How do you know?

I saw a post of several pictures of hands and feet that had been attached by muskies and/or northern. There were maybe half a dozen pictures of three or four different incidents.

That being said, it is completely ridiculous to be against muskies because they "attack children". I would be willing to bet at lot of money that many, many more people are sent to emergency rooms by household cats than muskies each year. In fact, I bet the difference is huge. Average number of "attacks" each year by muskies is likely much less than one in the entire country. Is the person you spoke to deathly afraid of and strongly against furry little kitties? smirk.gif

On West Battle Lake about 15 years ago, a woman was dangling her foot off of her canoe while she a relaxing and a fish grabbed hold of her foot. I am sure that it was thinking that it was a dieing fish and tryed to take advantage.

On my fiance's lake, I won't say which one it is because I don't want to scare any small children, but every year in the shallows I get attacked by 100's of lake shiners. They just sit there and peck peck peck at my toes. I know that they are trying to eat me. But.......... I still net them and use them for bass off her dock. Ahhh sweet revenge. I call it a messed up food chain.

To say that muskies attack children is absolutly ridiculous. Scoot is right, many, mnay more injuries come from household cats than Muskies.

The guy went as far as pointing at my kids and stating they should be the reason I hate Muskies . I'm assuming he ment the Muskies might attack them . I guess that I shouldn't diminish the guys concern , it seemed genuine but very mis-placed . I was kind of taken by surprise and ticked off at the over the top approach he had . Oh well ...

Old WI story of woman dangling fingers in the water, gets bit by musky, flips musky in the boat. CO happens to see the commotion, comes over and gives her a citation for fishing without a license and illegally taking a musky by means other than hook and line. Heard that one from more than one old timer as a kid. Supposedly happened on Chip Flowage in the 50s. About as likely as muskies attacking small children.

The only muskie attack I know of happened to my uncle.

My Dad and Uncle where out on Leech muskie fishing when my dad caught I think a 48incher, They got the fish into the boat and my dad was going to the front of the boat for a better picture. As my dad was going to the front my uncle swong around and his elbow went into the muskies mouth shocked.gif

I actually witnessed what I belive to be a muskie attack and successfully eat a baby duckling on silver lake in North st paul. Mighta been a pike though thee was a water explosion and tail swishing but it was last light and I couldnt confirm If it was a muskie and It happened fast. The oddest thing is though 3 days before I saw a new topwater lure for bass and muskie and it was a hairy duckling looking thing and I said to myself " yeah right like thats gonna work" shocked.gif

I wonder if that same guy that is scared of the water because of muskies or warns you that your children are in serious trouble because of the muskies owns a dog. On the news last week a young boy was attacked by a dog and bitten real bad. If I remember right the news caster said that in this country a person is bitten by a dog every minute. I asked the wife if I heard that right and she said I think so. Every minute is 1440 people every day being bitten by mans best friend. And he is worried about a musky??? Get a life..........

I bet he makes his kids wear helmets when they leave the house.

I however did witness a muskie eat a duckling on Lake Nokomis. It would have been a tiger muskie. I think muskies target ducks. Think about those little feet splashing on the surface. Plus, when the ducks hatch there will be like a dozen or more. A month later there will be half that. Obviously there are other predators but I think the muskie gets credit for some kills.

a few over the last decade with millions of hours of swimming in those lakes your odds are better at the Casino, I've only known 1 person to witness a attack, that was on a lake in So.MN many years ago, my Buddy his wife, her sister and boyfriend were swimming and wading in waist deep water, it was his sister in laws happy time of the month, yea so she was probably not too cool anyway that day, well they were all standing there when the sister started screaming reached down with both hands grabbed the fish that had clamped onto her Cha - Cha and ran out of the water the thing was all hung up in her suit by it's teeth and had ahold of her to boot and would not let go till she got out of the water, he said it was a pike over 2 foot long, he's not a fishermen so I'm pretty sure he's telling the truth LOL
