eyefan
Does anyone know about the new WR Typical buck taken in Sperry, IA? I've seen pictures but no details. IT IS MASSIVE!!!! Gross 235; net 233. There is a pic with 2 deer in the bed of a pickup, one being this, and the other netting 201.

Black_Bay
I wonder how much of the great hunting for big bucks in Iowa come from places like this.
art
When you say WR buck do you mean world record? I sure hope deer taken in these kinds of situations aren't put into the books. I know they are still semi-wild but it's still a controlled environment.
harvey lee
If one wanted a big buck like that, all you need to do is open your checkbook up and go to the preserves. Still a big buck.
roosterslayer
P&Y, and B&C say that for an animal to be entered into the book it must be free ranging and not in a pen. it doesn't matter if the pen is 1 acre or a 1000 acres. no high fence animal can be entered as free range or fair chase. eyefan
My apologies...all I saw was a pic and little detail. If I would have known it was shot on a ranch or "controlled" environment, I would not have brought it up. It is a beautiful animal but in my mind, that's not what the sport is about. chucker34
Whoa. Nice buck no matter what. I noticed their web site says you can hunt the preserve or on one of their "open" or unfenced properties. Perhaps it was a free ranging buck? Any story behind it on the web or in print? I seriously considered doing an outfitted whitetail bowhunt this year down in Illinois. I was traveling there for work anyway and thought that I could cut on the travel expenses. BTW, the hunt was extremely reasonable compared to most. Then I read the outfitters policy on being penalized big time for arrowing anything below 140 P&Y and having to give them your deer in this instance. What were they going to do, put it on their wall of shame? Cripes. Give me a break. I snapped to it and bought some new hunting equipment instead. I didn't get a deer - YET - this year but had more fun doing things my own way instead of someone telling me what a trophy is. One more thing, I get a kick out of these outfitters telling you to expect to see monster bucks. What about the majority of guys that saw the same deer they would at home and never got a shot. You only see the pics of the half a dozen guys that did get the monsters. I'm not knocking outfitters. They have every right to manage their land the way they want. And I would consider paying to hunt with one that shared my same beliefs, preferences for hunting, etc. There are plenty of good ones on this site and in this state. I just like the outfitters that don't "guarantee" success rates but rather say something along the lines of "we make every effort to put you in front of trophy bucks through careful land management, scouting, and stand placement" etc. That is my kind of outfitter. Oh, and no high fences.

If I were a nonresident I wouldn't even consider the state Just joshin' ya...this is certainly the exception and not the rule. There are a small number of outfits like this in the state, and the vast majority of giant deer you see killed in Iowa are legit. Many areas produce a bunch of outstanding deer every year....especially those areas east of I35 and/or south of I80. Last night I had my hands around a 170+ a local guy shot in the NE part of the state during first season. Unbelievable
Cooter
I'm no expert on big bucks but that does not look like a 233" typical or whatever the score supposedly is to me.

MNMAV93
i have a farm in southeast iowa that we just purchased this year with 62 acres about half and half of timber and crp. we did early muzzleloader and took a doe and a fairly nice nine point. then archery came and my cousing came down and saw 4 nice shooter bucks ranging from 150-165 class but couldnt get them within range. my brother and i bought two bows and hope to get out next year and get a trophy. i know that there is a lot of public land down in my area that is very good hunting so if you want any information just let me know. tealitup
I think that was not a free ranging deer; or at least it was not tagged as one - since there is NO KILL/SITE TAG.Not a WR deer; just a pet that was put down.
chucker34
tealitup, how do you really feel? LOL. I agree with you. If you can "control" the animal no matter if its two acres or 10,000 acres surrounded by a fence, the playing field is nowhere near level. And again, I want to make sure my comments from yesterday were not offensive to outfitters. I think there are many, many great ones out there. I just don't like being told what a "trophy" is and so therefore, before anyone says it, I will choose not to hunt at or with places that dictate it. To each their own.
