weekend reports

Fished Forest this morning with my nephew. 7 follows (including a double follow, first time I've seen that), but no takers. All on topwaters except one on a small crank. Most were in the 30" range but a couple somewhere in the low 40s.

Fished Vermilion's East Bay from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m.

One follow, about a 40-incher, on a white bucktail. Saw 20 pike and caught a few, but no size. Smallies were still defending beds, and I nailed a few of those and a nice 'eye for supper.

Talked to a musky guide I know on the water about 5:30 p.m., and from 10 to 11 a.m. in a certain bay that will go unmentioned, the fish binged. He and his boat partners caught a mid 40s, two pike in the mid 40s, and had three musky follows. That was about half an hour after I left that bay after fishing it for an hour and a half.

Figures.

But there IS tomorrow. grin.gif

Lost one at boat side this morning mad.gif How come that never happens when your alone, always a audience when that happens. blush.gif

The fish seemed to respond well to very slow moving bucktails and smaller plastics like the new Reef Hawg Twists or Bull Dawgs run out deep past the weedline.

Youngest son (13) got his biggest, a nice fat 46"er Saturday morning. Had to go back three times before she would take it for real. Only saw 2 other fish. I will try to post a pic later.

On a lake by alex My cousin got a 33" tiger. I missed a mid 30 and lost a mid 30. My buddie had a upper 40 hit a top water but missed. We had about 8 follows and one that just about jumped into the boat from behind us. Still don't know what that was about. We did get plenty of bass and pike. I also got a 3 and a 4 pound bass at the same time on a storm crank bait first time for that. I also got a heck of a sunburn.

The weather was nice, but too nice. We got skunked on Sat. Not too surprising, most of the others we talked to didn't even see a fish on the lake we were on, but we had 8 follows for our efforts.

We did see a couple very nice upper 40 inch class fish. I had my first follow on a hellhound (just picked one up), otherwise most action was on topwater.

We had one relatively hot follow, the rest were lethargic and more just curious. We did not see a fish until late afternoon and had several follows in about an hour's time about 2 hours before dark. At sunset, nothing, even in the area where we had previously seen fish. The big fish will keep us coming back though. Nice to see.

Took a muskie buddy and another friend out Saturday. The latter had not fished in ten years and never for muskies. Naturally he bagged a 41" boatside.

He started freaking out when it followed the lure to the boat. We both told him to start a figure eight and once he got the lure moving again the fish hammered it! A real thrill for all three of us.

Big Pond. Lots of follows once we got off the rocks and started fishing the weeds. No takers, not real aggresive on the follows either. Couple of snakes and that was it.

Walleyes were snapping for my buddies in the other boats.

Minnetonka Saturday morning west side, 6am-11am, 1 follow from a small 30" fish on a bucktail. Saw lots of carp, sunnies are spawning on the sand points, and saw huge schools of sunnies (smaller fish), looked like easy pickings for a muskie. Caught a few pike, they seemed active.

Too nice of a day.

Lots of Bass Boats out there for the Minnetonka Bass Classic!!!!

I only made it out on Saturday early morining and late afternoon and evening and not much to report just one follow. Threw bucktails and spinnerbaits most of the time. It was just fun to be out. There were several boats out on the lake I was on and we all were doing the same thing, so maybe I should have been doing the oppisite??? grin.gif Overall it was a great day.

We'll my first experience on Rebecca was short lived as I got Ill and had to leave early, however I did get one Muskie follow right up to the side of the boat (Only about 38 inches) It was wierd because I had just casted into the wind and got a birds nest in my Power Pro line and the bucktail was sitting on the bottom for about a minute, so I just retrieved it not expecting anything and it turned out to be the only action we had all day. The Ski' came up to about an inch from the top of the water and sat parallel to my boat for a few seconds and then slowly dissapeared into the dark. On a side note, there were hundreds of dead small crappies and sunnies all over the lake and the water temp was 75 degrees.

White Bear was covered in dead pannies and bullheads also. I wonder if the Muskies chow on those when they start tipping over or if the same factors that killed the pannies puts the musky in a bad spot also?

Unfortunately, the muskies may be next. As we all know, muskies are a frail species despite their size and strength. Don't be surprised if hot weather affects the muskies in a highly negative way. Dead sunnies and crappies don't benefit muskies in the slightest. Only pike will feed on dead fish. On a side note, for those who have doubts about the slow fishing start, we boated 8 muskies over the weekend. A 31, 33, 34, 35, 36, 36, 38, and a 40. So keep your heads up. They're there and so far the muskies seem to have liked the warm weather. Let's just hope the summer doesn't bring anymore record highs or our fish will be joining the sunnies....

Hiya -

I only got out for a couple short stretches over the weekend but still got off to an OK start.

I start the season on the same spot each year, and I think this is about the 4th year in a row I've had a hit in the first 10 casts. Two years ago I got a fish on my 3rd cast. Fish missed me on the 1st cast, followed on the 2nd, and hit on the 3rd. Last year had a hit on the 5th cast or so and didn't get hooks. This year a fish came all the way out of the water after a topwater and missed it. Cartwheeled right over the top of it. This all happens in the same 15 yard stretch of weedline. I swear it's the same fish every year... Anyhow - got the first fish of the year a few minutes later. Did a short radio spot for KFAN Outdoors on Sat. AM - called in from the boat. Was just bobbing around in a weedbed while I was talking to Rob Dreslein and had a fish paddle by about 3' from the boat. Was pretty funny - in mid-sentence and I blurted out "oh, there's one!" Saw some fish on Sunday, including some realy dandies, missed one. Spent most of the weekend pounding nails on a new cabin, and fishing bass and crappies with my girls. Nice way to start the season though actually. Will be hitting it harder next weekend.

Cheers,

Rob Kimm

Fished from 5:45am 'till 11pm on Saturday on 3 Metro lakes. 4 follows for me and 4 for my partner, another lost fish. One was interested on a figure 8, turning 3 or 4 times but not eating. Fished from 5pm 'till dark Sunday and boated a 30" on a figure 8. The hunt for the big one continues...let the fun begin! wink.gif
