Cleaning the screen of my 332c

Scoot

Question

I have a Lowrance 332c and I love it. However, I have a very hard time cleaning the screen on the thing. Whatever I've cleaned it with leaves big streaks that distort the image on the screen. Does anyone else have this problem? Even with glass cleaner and a good rag I can't seem to get the dang thing cleaned right. What have people found works well to get the screen cleaned without leaving big streaks on the screen?

JP

Check around out at the Lake Elmo airport.

That's the same stuff we use to clean the windsheilds on small airplanes. If you go to a small airport, the same business that sells av-gas for single engine airplanes will also usually sell Meguiar products.

OK, I thought about posting this last year but forgot. All you need to do is put a little white vinegar in with your Windex. Works every time. I even went as far as buying a little travel size bottle of hair spray, rinsed it out and put in the vinegar solution. I keep this little bottle in the boat so I have some available on longer trips away from home. I really cannot tell you how much to add to the Windex but it does not take too much. I did this all last year and it has not harmed the unit. I also use ½ water and ½ white vinegar to clean off the hard water stains on the boat. Can you tell I’m a cheapskate? grin.gif

I used Maguires Mirror Glaze 17 on my Garmin 172 color gps and it scratched the anti-glare surface. I sent into Garmin and they replaced it no charge. They said use only water and a soft cloth.

I called Reeds to make sure that I was right about the alcohol. Guess what, I was wrong!!!!

They told me that it is half water and half Isopropel. They also told me to use a lint free reg to wipe it with.

The other option they suggested was Lens cleaner that you use for your binoculars.

Sorry for the wrong suggestion.

isopropel? Maybe isopropanol aka isopropyl alcohol.

half distilled water and half alcohol would be 100 proof vodka, if the alky were ethyl. Isopropyl is rubbing alc. from drug store. Denatured is shellac thinner from paint store.

Good info in this thread but does anyone use anything to protect the screen from scratches?

Thanks!

Camera stores will sell packs of soft plastic film sheets kinda like the stuff you see on plastic parts when they're new, like digital clock displays, etc. Folks are using these on the display screens on the backs of their digital cameras so they don't need to use a bulky case to protect them them when they're tossed into a purse, etc.

Endust make a product called Endust for electronics. They are pre moistened wipes in a tube. It is made for wipeing down computer screens, tv etc. I was told once that windex is a no no for lcd sceens- like tv's, computers, and I guess that would go for gps and depth finders also.

I clean my Lowrance screens with just warm water and a little dish soap on a soft rag. By the way, that's what Lowrance recommends you do on their HSOforum wink.gif It works great. cool.gif They don't recommend using any solvents or harsh cleaners and be careful with the cloth so you don't scratch the surface.
