Some info on my deer kills

Hope you all find this somewhat interesting. Have tallied my deer kills and found that out of 29 kills 16 have been on public land, 15 on private. Of those 29, 12 have been bow kills and the rest either shotgun(5) or rifle(11) with one muzzleloader. Oh yeah, only one nice buck outa the bunch confused.gif Hopefully gonna change that this year. Anyone else have similar records? Either public/private or gun/bow? I don't want to hear how many were nice bucks mad.gif! OK, I actually do.

At my cabin I have a list of the deer I shot, where I was hunting when I shot them, and what firearm or bow I was using. Unfortunately I didn't keep track of the years when I shot them and I wish I would have done that.

BTW, 16 and 15 is 31, not 29. But that's probably just the buck fever talkin' grin.gif

Yeah dude apparent;y you've killed 2 deer by hand or they were taken on land other than public or private.

I've shot 3 deer in 10 yrsbut I've tagged 5. 2 kills with the shotgun and 1 with my rifle. All on public land.

Archery hunting for the first time this year.

I have kept a log of every fishing and hunting outing since March of 1993. A very detailed log.

In fact, I was just updating it with my latest trip to the lake.

Honestly, I am not gonna go through the logs to tally everything.... crazy.gif

Let me say this. I have never shot a deer on public land. Well, I have only hunted public land a few times.

This much I know. 1992 I shot my biggest buck ever to that point. 1993 I shot my biggest buck ever to that point. 1994 I shot my biggest buck ever to that point. This year, am I gonna shoot my biggest buck ever??? Again..... smile.gif

Kinda interesting, I also have a log, well sort of. I have never shot a deer on public land myself. Quick breakdown.

Muzzloader: 1 (Last year was first year trying)

Rifle: 2

Archery: 11

Shotgun Wisconsin: 5

Shotgun Minnesota: 23

The last few years I have passed up more deer than ever before, now it's more about the quality than the quantity. I grew up hunting with people that were and still are, brown it's down. I now also buy the all-season license which allows for more discretion.

Got my first with bow in 1968. First with rifle in 1969. Didn't hunt much in the 70's. #28 last year with the bow. half doe, half buck. Couple dandys. Can't remember how many with rifle. Mostly on friends land with a few on public. 2 with car. 1 turkey with car.

Cooter, I find the list very interesting. I never tire of hearing deer stories & not just my own...

I made up a list about a year ago & since have put it into an Excel Spreadsheet. It took me a while to make sure I had them all & then eventually from pictures & asking some questions of those I hunt with came up with the years. I track where I shot it, time of day/hunting situation, approximate distance (exact for bow), weapon, standing/walking/running, what it was, etc.

All have been shot on private land, probably around 20 different properties over 20+ years. 19 bow, 2 muzzleloader, 4 rifle, 33 shotgun. 13 were bucks, 3 of which were decent 8 pointers, but nothing close to huge. I shot one 9 pointer, but it was small, at the time I thought it was a 6 pointer. Like Stratosman, the majority of the bucks I've shot I would now pass on in most situations. I passed close to 10 shots on smaller bucks bowhunting last year alone. The rest of the deer were a combination of does & fawns. About half my total deer were adult does.

I don't intentionally shoot fawns early bow season or early gun season, but have miss ID'ed some as bigger deer. Late season, they're going down if that's the only choice & they're decent sized. Some of the first fawns shot were in the lean years, when a couple of those was the difference between 2 & 4 deer for a party of 10. They're by far my favorite to eat.

I guess 15 plus 16 is 31 blush.gif Must have been thinking about the two my bumper has killed mad.gif A log is worthwhile and something to start when young before you forget past hunts.

Am gonna try to add about 3 does and a nice buck to the tally this year - I'm overdue for one.

Ive shot

Minnesota !3 bucks,23 does

Wisconson 1 buck,4 does

Montana 2 Pope and Young bucks-1 doe

North Dakota 1pope and Young-1 boone and Crockett along with 16 bucks and 29 does.

Its sounds like alot but I deer hunt approx. 35-40 days each fall for the last 15 years and the 15 before that approx 15 days per season. All the bucks but 4 have been killed with the bow and the does have been all bow kills except 7.The last 7 years have been very good as I have killed on average 6-7 a year, good old North Dakota and Montana. Also, forgot 1 book buck for the North Dakota records,171 points scored.

All deer have been shot on private property.

21 deer in total for me Not counting the three with the truck. (1 in Iowa, 1 in MN & 1 in Wisconsin all within 90 days of each other)

2 in Minnesota with a shotgun (both does)and both on public land.

19 in Wisconsin with a rifle. 10 bucks and 9 does (no nubbies yet as I try to identify them) Biggest buck was a nine pointer that scored 141. Most of the rest of the bucks were basket racked 5s, 6s, 7s & 8s.

18 of the deer were shot on private land. My private land is now being hunted by a retired conservation officer so last year I had to hunt public land and shot a spike buck.

I can make this short & sweet.

All deer on Public Land.

Doe to buck ratio is somewhere in the 3 or 4 to 1 neighborhood.

None of the bucks are worth bragging about. (Spikes, forks, small 6's)

All shot with rifle.

Like some others, I have kept a detailed log of each hunt since 1985. I include weather, snow if any, who hunted and what we saw, as well as any other significant event. All deer were taken on private land (now my land) with a rifle.

Big Bucks (8+ pts no baskets) 10

Small Bucks (not a big one) 11

Does (adult) 9

fawns 3

Bassboy,

You're progression sounds pretty normal. I started carrying a gun when I was 14 & didn't shoot my first deer until I was 20, that sucked. I definitely blew some chances. I shot my 2nd deer 45 minutes after the first one. There weren't many deer then, we only got 3 total that year.

I've missed plenty of archery shots too. In my first 5 years of bowhunting I shot one deer & took probably half a dozen shots. I remember shooting over the back of an unsuspecting doe on a perfectly clear, broadside, 10 yard shot. I can still see my nock winking at me from just barely over her backline & she didn't duck it, she never moved. I finally got my first deer with the bow & thought I was off & running. I only had one shot opportunity in the next two years & I passed on it, it was a small fawn around the 1st of October.

I remember when I first started bowhunting, I was happy if I even saw deer every 2-3 outings. Now out of say 30 outings per year I expect to have less than 10 where I don't see deer. A good chunk of that's experience, but more of it's the number of deer there are now. The last 8 years I've averaged over 2 with the bow, so it'll likely get a lot better if you put in your time, & yes I still miss, I'm human, not machine.

Bigbucks, yes i have missed more than i care to admitt but somting else i failed to mention was half of those misses were F*** ups. bowstring hit jacket, sights were loose, punched triggers dropped bow arm, ect. i see deer just about every time i go out but getting one is another story. last season i only missed about a week of hunting total between sept and end of dec. late season got brutal as i didnt see any deer for about a week even thouhg i was in a good spot. but that nine pointer i saw convinced me that -20 degrees was still warm enough for a little treestand wait after school every nite. crazy.gif

man! i wish i would have started bow hunting in highschool...i didn't get into it until after college when i am now in the real world of 8 - 5 B.S. That's awesome you can hunt everday afterschool....live it up!!! Good luck this season...just keep at er...learn from your mistakes and enjoy yourself.

I hear you man. I blew a shot on a deer because I got my grunt tube caught in the string. I blew another one because I somehow triggered my release during the draw & dropped the bow 16' to the ground, that's just to name a couple of the more memorable screw ups.

I wish I'd have started before age 24 or whatever I was as well.
