How's the shed hunting going so far??

Recommended Posts

Hey just wondering how everyone's shed hunting has been so far. Six hours in for us so far with nothing. I can't believe the amount of sign we are seeing. Probably saw over 200 rubs today alone! The city of Duluth desperately needs a deer hunt to thin out the herds!

I found a 3 pt antler this weekend. Sadly, there was a chunk of skull attached to it still. It was on a field approach, where a deer apparently got whacked by a car. I'll look for the other antler when the snow melts.

I have not heard of anyone finding anything yet. They gotta be out there. I personally have not been out and about to look yet. This coming weekend, I am going to hopefully check a chunk of land near home.

I spotted a 100 class 8pt, still sporting his rack last weekend. Haven't been out to look myself, but a buddy at work had already picked up 2 sets and 2 singles in before the 20 inch snow we had last Saturday.

Been out a half dozen times at work in Eagan and at home in Stillwater. Found a ton of sign, beding areas, droppings, but no sheds yet. Have a 6 point coming to the feeder every other day that had both sides still on Sunday.

Interesting to hear that there are still some bucks out there with headgear on!

Was out for few hours on Sat looking for some sheds with some family members - nothing. Was a nice nature hike though. Been wondering whether it would be worth the time to teach my labs how to look for antlers.

Went shed hunting a couple a weeks ago and found a big six. Had it scored and it came out at 87 pts and the one side. So I'm thinking that if the other side was perfectly symetrical it would come out to about 194 give or take. Thats with a 20in inside spread ( don't know the exact measurement for the spread though). Needless to say we were pretty happy.

wow thats a nice shed, is there a chance at finding the match? I've always thought that finding a trophy set of matched sheds is harder than shooting a trophy buck (unless the sheds are at your feeder)

could you post a picture of it?

I'll try and post pics. Is anyone willing to post for me, I could e-mail pics to someone who knows what they are doing. I haven't found the other side yet either. Will be looking alot more though.

Guy, email me the pics and I will post for you. We too found a trophy class shed this morning! The single measured just a hair under 70!, so I am guessing that would put it right around 160 - 165? The picture of ours is attached below. Needless to say, my 13 year old daughter (who has been looking with me) was thrilled to find this! Just over 8 hours of hiking so far and this was our first find for the year. Gonna be searching for the other one the rest of the week!!

We were scouting for new stand sites & shed hunting kind of together, then we did spend some time just shed hunting. I found half of a very small forky, lot harder to see than the sides you guys have found. I'd say 5-6" long, but it was a shed, it goes along with the 7-8" fork I found last year...

I found a really nice 5 pointer in my backyard a couple weeks ago. Scored it at about 75 pts, but I dont exactly do a lot of scoring, so it probably is not a very precise number. Any ways, I'm just excited to see him this year, maybe even get a shot at him if things go my way grin.gif

Guy100, nice shed!! The good news is that with the mild winter that deer is probably still alive. You might need some help harvesting him, just let me know, I'll bring my own bow and stand smile.gif

Good luck!

So far I have found a set of an eight, and halfs of a spike, fork, three, an old rotten chewed up one, and a huge one with four points long tines. Man would I like to find the other half. His G-2 is 11" long. Hopefully I will get him next fall. Found it on state land too.

fishermn I e-mailed you a couple of photos of sheds, I am hoping you can post them for me as well.

I actually have not found any walking yet, but have picked up 4 on the way to work.

I drive by a corn field that they are crossing to and have actually found 4 by glassing the edge of the field. I have spent 20 hours walking it and nothing!
