slick814
I know it sucks not to have a wife who understands your passions, believe me. My first wife was anti-hunting, fishing, well... everything that didn't involve something that she wanted to do. One of the reasons we didn't work out. I learned from that, and now don't have the same problems with my second wife. She's fine with fishing, because I involve the whole family. As an example, last weekend, my mother-in-law asked my wife if it bothers her that I spend as much time fishing as I do. Her answer..."It's his one big hobby, so no, why would I?"... I know that that kind of thing was an issue for my brother. he played on 3 softball teams, hunted like crazy, fished like crazy, and wasn't home a lot because of his hobbies... he made a compromise of no ball, but hunting and fishing are ok. He's cut down on his ice time, but still spends a lot of time on the water, and makes sure to take the kids out with him when the chance is there. I don't really hunt much, and quit playing ball after I tore my rotator cuff 6 years ago, so maybe cutting down on some of your other "away from home" (even for a day or few hours) might help her to let you fish more? Just a thought....
Long Gray Line
All you guys talking about divorcing so you can go fishing/hunting... Instead of getting married just find a woman you hate and buy her a house. Cuts out the fights by eliminating the middle-woman....
squeedunk
I just got married this past December but I have been fishing with my wife for the past 4 years. When she is with we make it a fun time for both of us. It is usually a hot sunny day where she can lay in the sun while I fish. We get a magazine for her to read and pack a picnic lunch to have while we are out there. It also helps to have a secret stash of chocolate in your tackle box in case she gets anxious to leave before you are ready! These trips are also about 2 hours rather than the 5 hours I might be out there if I was with the guys. I think that if she can join you every once in a while she might understand how important it is to you. My wife knows fishing is my one big hobby that she can't take away from me so she doesn't complain when I go. Just like I don't complain when she wants to go shopping! I don't fish 5 days a week like I did in college but I still get out enough to keep me happy. I certainly wouldn't trade her in to get those days back either! Good luck~Squeedunk
snatcher20
I know I got the best deal out of all these responses. Before I proposed to my wife in 2002, I made a deal. She wanted a certain size diamond, I wanted a new fishing boat. Long story short, she likes to show off her ring, I go out fishing in a brand new Alumnacraft. I paid for the ring, she paid for the boat. Top that!

woodman
I got lucky and Blessed at the same time when I said I DO!!! My wife of 8 years loves to hunt, fish, and spend as much time outdoors as she can. She is my hunting, fishing, and scouting partner for life. She grew up in North Hollywood, California, and still loves the outdoors. Most of her family members (all twelve siblings) don't understand why she would shoot, or sit on the ice. She tells them to come up to God's country and experience it for themselves and they would understand. We were blessed with two kids 5 and 2 and you have to love it when they both ask every night when I pick them up from school and day care if we are going to the fishing house. I take them as much as I can and we love it. I know that they will be right with mom and dad on out trips and what a better way to spend a day then with the family in the outdoors. Catfish999
My wife was that way at first, but now that we have been married for 35 years, she is happy to see me leave the house to go fishing so she gets a rest from me chasing her around the bed. Hang in there. She will come around.

Turkeyhunter10ga
Funny , i just had a discussion about this very subject with my wife of 24 yrs about how we used to go fishing together before the I Do's and how she rarely went with afterwards. Now that the kids are all adults now , she is wanting to start again , only she doesn't like to get up early to go . ( she's a late sleeper , in my mind, anything before 9 or 9:30 is early to her , and i know not to even try speaking to her for a 1/2 hr after she's up ) < not a morning person> So it's nice to have her interested in starting again and i guess i'll have to compromise and leave a little later in the mornings, so as to have her along with.Otherwise she would probably do what my mother used to do to dad when he would take me to god's country ( up there in MN) for a week of fishing for 'eyes. When we returned , we would find a new pc of furniture in the house or whatever it cost for us to go , she would spend the same amount for something she wanted. Which i guess is only fair. Sorry about being so long winded , especially from a Hoosier and not a 'Sotan , but got tired of just reading and felt like posting. Not a newbie , but usually just read what going on up there. She too gets mad if I leave her at home or dont ask every now and again to take her with... However.. wall eyell be
Whiskers When everyone else in your boat catches more and/or bigger fish than you, that just proves your a great guide! After all it isn't a guides job to catch fish himself, so much as to get his passengers catching fish; right ?? At least that's my story (and I'm stickin' to it) whenever my wife (or any guest in my boat) outfishes me
Juan Grande
I thought this post was hilarious when I first read it as I've faced some of the same issues. Now that I see it's five pages long, it's obvious that most guys have dealt with this issue at some point. My wife likes to summer fish. If the fish are biting then she'll fish and make me bait the hook and take the fish off. If they're not biting then she'll sun tan and let me fish. Either way, I don't get to catch anything, but it's still nice having her out there. Not to change the subject, but I have another question. I've noticed in some of these posts that fisherman are like "...I got her so and so and she let me buy a new boat." I'm kind of wondering what kind of jobs people have or what kind of creative financing they use to afford the fancy rigs? I'm in the market for a boat and I've noticed that the nicer boats are easily $20,000-30,000. Add in the fact that you need a nice four wheel drive truck to pull it and that puts it close to 50K. Don't mean to be nosey, just wondering if others set aside a big portion of their income for recreation? Toys are expensive!
tweeder
I don't get in trouble if I bring a couple of fish home to eat, if I get sunked then I am in trouble for fishing! She does like Ice fishing better than my first love, GOLF! Mainly because its a lot cheaper! As far as the new question about the how to buy a boat. My grandpa always said "live in a chevy, drive a caddy" Meaning you don't need a huge eloborate home, save that money to spend on the toys. Most of the people that I know the spend lots on the toys and don't have 6 figure incomes basically follow that advice!
mltjanderson
the boat doesn't make the fishman. I started with a 14 ft. boat and a 3.5 motor no reverse 360 swivel in the back of my pick up total price $100.00 now after many years I've upgraded to a 16ft boat with a 40hp motor still under 5500.00 The boat is just a piece of equipment it don't need to be pretty to catch fish just functional. Buy what you can afford and enjov fishing PERIOD.
Northland Sportsman
I am one of the lucky ones. I was married last August (outside on the shores of a lake!) I proposed to my wife while canoeing down a river on fishing opener. She knew before we made commitment that I was an outdoors person. She never complains about my fishing or hunting unless I don't invite her along. She also doesn't complain about all the equipment I need to hunt/fish. She doesn't even ask to spend equal amounts on her, just as long as I don't forget about her all together. She wanted a dog, so we got a GWP that is a hunter and a family member. She likes the little things in life - being together, spending time with family & friends, fishing, camping, etc.. I try to make these outings comfortable and fun for her and I think she appreciates that and understands that I need to go with the guys sometimes too. Like I said, I am one of the luck ones. cold one sd
My wife of 33 years loves to fish in the summer out of a boat, but she doesn't trust ice if it is 6 feet thick. She took a break from deer hunting to raise 2 kids. Now they are grown and gone and she was thinking about starting to hunt again. We are now raising a 2 1/2 year old grandson and she will be taking a break for a few more years. Much better than the little guy going to a foster home. Now I have another little fishing buddy!!!! hattrk4me
Wives AKA “THE FUN FILTERS”.Mine is great, she supports me hunting/fishing all the time. If I get a chance to go, I run it by her and 9-10 times she says go for it. Last year for X-mas she bought me a new Jiffy 3.0 auger, last fall a new topper for my truck to Haul all my decoys, and this year Xmas was a FL-18. Gotta love her.I got real lucky. Stratosman
I got real lucky too, I get to go pretty much whenever I want, within reason of course, I tell her it is a two way street, if there are things she likes to do, I'm not going to try and stop her from doing them. And I made sure I set precedent from day one, now she knows what to expect.
wolfman-k
I too count myself lucky, my wife insisted that I go with her brother to hunt elk in Washington one year, and Colorado another time, and I've gone on several fishing trips with him too. Come to think of it, you don't suppose she is seing someone else-------naw She also bought me my auger, my rifle, a spotting scope & a range-finder; gotta love that woman! She grew up in a hunting & fishing family, so she understands completely! If her folks were still around, I'd thank them for bringing her up right. This summer, I'm gonna try to get her to go fishing again with me, wish me luck!
