good point on the liver thing.  My kids are 15 and 17 and I've eaten liver from time to time but never did I ever ponder of making it for them and expecting them to eat it.  We get the liver with our cow every year and I eat some of it.  Who would buy liver at the store for a family meal or put it on the grocery list?  There are 100 things to make for dinner before liver enters the equation.

Lamb liver is very good BTW...:D

I have to agree with `gunner55`. Boiled Blood sausage( ring style and cold) was forced to stay at the table until I ate it. I couldn`t even wear socks the same shade of that grey without gagging! That was 52 or 53 years ago and I`m fighting the gag reflex thinking of it now.

Ok so my dad worked in a beef slaughter plant all his life.  he would get deals on liver, heart, tongue, brains, and anything else that was on sale to employees.  I draw the line at tongue, use to boil it, peel it, slice a big ole slice, flop on bread with mustard.  Today, the hispanic guys bring in boiled lingua (tongue), diced up and eat it in tortillas.  Talk about needing the trash can next to me want to gag.  I will eat just about anything give me some salsa (chile) and a tortilla i will eat dirt.  No Tongue period.  So i will wait for the puns on that.

I like liver but wouldn't force it on me, next to lamb chops my favorite food is pickled turkey gizzards.  Loved em as a kid too.  I used a knife and fork and sprinkle pepper on them.  Some guts are good some aren't.

All that stuff you mentioned is in sausage hot dogs etc.

Some types of squash I like. Others could just as well be tossed over the fence to the sheep. The gal I refer to in my column as "Auntie Mar Mar" once worked at a place where they made hot dogs. She told about large boxes of stuff labelled "Beef Lips" that got dumped into the vats. Hmmm...

I worked for a year at butcher shop/meat processing plant. In the grind room, we made beef patties for one national hamburger chain. Good 85/15. We also made the meat mix for a big Taco chain, per their recipe/instructions. You don't wanna know, besides the pour in as much water as it will hold. IN MEAT. Don't eat at taco chains. Dog food is better.

Exactly, but to simply eat it as is, is a different story.  With sausage and hot dogs, they have a wrapper on them, not some big ole tongue floating in a pot of water

Lima beans. Not horrible, but not good either. Strange taste and texture. Odd little things. Only had them once in a great while. On a whim, I picked up a can of butter beans a while ago. Been twenty years since I've had those. They seemed to need something, so I threw in some bacon chunks and few onion bits. Much better. :lol:

I remember when I was younger my brother was newly married. I was staying at their house. His new bride had been home during the day so she had supper in the crockpot. My brother and I got cleaned up from cutting firewood and she's sitting at the table eating a hamburger and fries..... I was like wow didn't know you could make that in a crockpot. She says no I made you guys liver????? My brother pulls the lid off the crockpot and yep there it was LIVER.....drenched in BBQ sauce. It quivered in the crockpot when he took a fork to it. Needless to say didn't even try it.

ugh...thanks for the memory Bobby.  My mom made some thing called "boiled dinner" which is an awful name for a meal to begin with.  Boiled cabbage with some ham specs in it and a few carrots which I supposed gave it some color and really jazzed it up???  

My dad would rave over it.   I think you ended up hungrier after eating it than you were before.  Good pick.

as good as hot dogs are I'm thinking they should put more of the garbage stuff in there than they already do, maybe they'd be even better :)

I remember my Dad talking my Mom into making some Norwegian recipe that included boiled cabbage and lamb for some elderly guests one night. Talk about wrecking a perfectly good leg of lamb and a beautiful head of homegrown cabbage! :mad: Bland and made the house stink, not unlike some other Norwegian food. The guests of course loved it. About the only saving grace was it didn't taste like lutefisk and she never made it again. :D

I'm not averse to eating hot dogs although I usually prefer the natural casing models. What I don't know about what's in there won't hurt me. When visiting my brother in Venezuela back in the 70's, we ate all kinds of weird stuff. Among my favorites was mondongo, a soup made from hog intestines along with vegetables native to the area. Looked like there were little pieces of washcloth floating around in it due to the villa in the intestines. A little chewy but absolutely delicious! :)

Not a big fan of liver but the absolute worst meal my Mom would fix was Stewed tomatoes over riced potatoes. Granted we were a big family with lots of kids ( 6 boys and 1 girl) and Dad was the soul bread winner but this was the worst. I did not mind the stewed tomatoes but always hated riced potatoes. Stewed tomatoes were nothing more than canned tomatoes with chunks of bread and then heated up. It was one of the meals that I would load up on bread. Peanut and jelly first then honey and peanut butter then jelly till I was full ;)

    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.

    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
