Storm #3 (Kayla)

Recommended Posts

In being fair to the weatherman I'm going to post on this one too.  3-6" in the metro area are expected.  Sounds like it may happen this time.  I'm in the metro so I'm proposing that I will need at least 3 inches for this to count as a win for the weatherman.  It is going to be windy so measurement may be difficult but I will do my best.

Winter Storm Kayla is looming...

Prediction #2-  the Iowa caucus app will screw up and we won't know the Iowa results for forever.  There will be some issue that we'll be hearing on the news for three days plus.

Piffle. C'mon down here.  SAYIN'  8-10" with locally higher amounts. Then the wind hits.  Already sayin' emergency travel only. Blower is super-tuned and fulla gas. Just reset skid shoes and sprayed silicone down chute tube and on flightings. Big ham thawing out along with a pkg of big chicken drumsticks. Beef soup already thawed. Bringer 'er on, scooter.

take a dollar bill out of your pocket and add 2 inches.  8 inches of snow is nothing.  It's no different than 4 inches of snow.  It's going to be beautiful blowing around too.  Take your time driving if you have to drive, leave early, enjoy the snow.  This should be embraced like rain coming when lawns need the help in the Summer.

If we lived in Flint we'd hoard the snow and melt it.  Leech~~ is waiting for it like a kid on Christmas Eve waiting for Santa.

I predict there will be so much hot air coming out of Iowa tonight that the snow melts before it hits the ground.  Trump alone will probably force this to be downgraded to merely light rain showers.

:D:D good one!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Nope, reallly doesn't, if ya rub it in....this product is silicone with Teflon for XC skis. Used to be a big skier, and the stuff works. My chute is black vinyl plastic, probably  would just come off on a metal chute.Top secret, though. .. Shhh.    Good lord, they've already closed all the schools, churches, public functions for tomorrrow....should I go crawl under the bed, too?

That's ok, I hit the Northshore this past weekend and there was pretty good snow.  See my "off trail snow depth test" on the Snowmobile thread under "I'm riding this weekend" :D

I remember when we called 6 inches of snow a dusting not a storm. What is that going to do keep the bicycles off of the streets. Many years ago up Nort when we got a storm (over a foot of snow) we would toss a couple tow straps in the truck and go look for people to pull out of the ditch just for fun.

Next time use a stick to measure the depth so we don't have to come look for ya.

I'm almost ready. Stuck another round bale in the feed lot tonight and will shuffle a couple wagons around in the a.m. so the tractor and skidloader will be ready to rock. Lambing barn is buttoned up so let 'er come. Good thing we lost as much snow as we did over the past week so there's more room if this thing does land a punch. I'm one of those guys who reports snowfall to the state climatology dept. so curious to see what we come up with. Just hope I can get at my grill without a lot of shoveling. I have more stuff to grill and I will start a thread to ask some of you experts how to maneuver with some of it. Sorta wish I had a smoker. Another thread idea! First I got some copy to write. :/

Worst part of all of this is that even an inch can cause traffic and safety issues.  The older I get the more I do not like snowstorms or threats of tornadoes.  Now that's here in the metro.  When I'm up north, I just love to drive the backroads with my truck in 4 wheel drive.  Peaceful and the ride is filled with memories and the beauty of the outdoors.  Heaven to me.  Here in the metro, that inch of snow turns to slick roads, and cranks up the odds of visiting the ditch or maybe worse.  The County does do a good job with the plows and the salt, but it's the prior to that, that gets me.  Guess my brain just comprehend the metro.  Saddest thing I ever did, was to move from Duluth to down here.  Now, don't get me wrong, Andover ain't a bad place to live, it's just not the Arrowhead.  So bring the storm on for today it's the day the muskrat may see his shadow or not.  Spring is near.  good luck.

News flash.  No shadow.  Early spring.

On a personal note looks like the LL family, or at least two of us, have to venture into the teeth of the storm tonight for a hockey game in Apple Valley early evening.  I'm more comfortable with our snow potential in the NW suburbs rather down that direction but I guess we will leave early and take our time.

I think the weatherman is going to win this one.  I watched Dave Dahl and Ian Leonard on the news last night and they both were really calm and stated what was going to happen without any panic.  I even caught Belinda Jensen at the end of the KARE broadcast and she just said 3-7' for the metro and they signed off.  The sky wasn't falling.  Maybe after they get into Winter a bit they calm down.  Comparable to your excitement getting out of bed opening morning of deer hunting vs day 3.  The edge wears off a bit.

    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
