Gun season in peak of rut

more non-"Truth" stupidity:

The people that shoot for the horns and gift the meat is the mentality I disgust... Apr is a short step to support that mentality.

BaaHaHa!

The only people who give the meat away are the self proclaimed meat hunters who have a "bloodbath" and can't eat them all.

What a joke.

Many of the comments Truth made were humorous.

But "300 yards with a muzzleloader" - can anyone say unethical.

Scoped.

Put 20 rounds through it last weekend just patterning and various distances. More shots prior to zero in. Rangefinder.... Unethical? No

I don't take a shot unless it's a 99%r.

Filling "dads" tag... is dad even hunting?

I love party hunting and will fight to the end to keep it. In just the last 2 years we added 5 young hunters to our party from the age of 10-16 and this is honestly the most fun I have ever had. We try to set up the kids on a few drives as posters to give them a chance at a deer as we do a drive and it's fun being able to teach them our traditions and pass the baton to a new generation. When the hunt is over we get together and cut up the deer and talk about the season and the things that happened during the hunt whether that is the ones we got or the ones that got away.

There is still a lot of corn in the fields and there will be lots of 1.5 year old deer left after the season is over with and my guess is there will be a lot fewer 2.5 YO plus deer taken because they will be hanging out in the corn and we won't even see them this year.

I hate the big buck craze and what it has done to deer hunting. People poaching deer for their racks, racks stolen out of cabins. The only reason for that dump is so someone can thump their chest and say what a great hunter they are. I don't eat racks. Don't leak on my leg for shooting a small buck.

What world do you live in that 300 yds shot with muzzleloader is 99%r? Good grief.

It likely won't be. But given a stationary deer. Having tested my rifle at those distances. It's no different that a 40yd with a bow. Unethical until your comfortable and confident in your ballistics. It's not likely that I'll take one past 150 yds, but at this point I can hit the kill zone at 300 no problem... So what's your problem...

Look up ultimate muzzleloader. That will easily shoot 500yds accurately.

You ever spend time at the range buddy? What makes you so much better?

After muzzleloader season is over the scope comes off, then I'm shooting my iron sites out to 100yds.

Pettty people

Try to get some enjoyment out of deer hunting.

Btch and moaning about antlers constantly

Another less talked about benefit to APRs, you have to really be sure of your target. Many does are passed on in low light or moving quickly through woods. This can only help improve safety in the woods. Before I get the "many people shoot it and leave it lay response" I can assure you they are in the minority. Why can't a guy enjoy APRs and get the "true" meaning of hunting??

I agree the horn porn craze just pits deer hunter against deer hunter.

Every year nice bucks with nice racks get shot, yet thats not good enough for the horn porners, they can't prove that they're a good enough deer hunter to go out and shoot their own big buck, they want the DNR to institute APR's so its easier for them.

Just get out and enjoy the hunt, the sunrises and sunsets, the comraderie, the challenge, the meat and antlers should be secondary. None of us are going to starve if we don't get that deer in the freezer and our ego will survive if we don't get a set of big antlers on the wall.

Enjoy the hunt.

Although I'm not in an APR zone, I think about the safety aspect every single year as I hear people ripping through clip after clip. Seems like some people shoot their gun more times opening morning that I do in 5 years!

And then there are others that don't believe someone elses "agenda" ought to be forced upon them.

Thank you, way too many over the top comments from both sides. I suggest everyone take a couple of weeks off of worrying about how others choose to hunt (horns or meat) and enjoy the hunt.

Safety in the woods? I have heard a lot of bizarre things that APR is supposed to benefit but that is right at the top.

Safety and knowing your target are paramount to hunting and whether you are hunting for horns or meat you need to identify your target period. Just because a person has no void in their life that can only be satisfied by a particular number of points on a rack it doesn't make them any less of a hunter nor does it make them any less concerned for safety or for knowing what they are shooting at.

Purple,

I'd be curious to know if you have hunted in an APR zone. I have seen a drastic change in how people hunt and this is due to APR. Far less driving is taking place because the drivers cant shoot at a deer in cover because they can't see if its a legal deer or not. It forces people to be sure of their target which in my opinion enhances safety. Sure everyone is supposed to clearly identify their target and what is behind it, but it doesnt always happen!

The hunt in the rut is fine with me, because it increases hunter success. But if MN continues a rut hunt, I think APR is a good countermeasure to ensure the most vulnerable deer have a little protection.

APR hasn't caused less driving to take place, but antler fever has. People are so afraid someone is going to push "their buck" off their land, that they don't let people do deer drives anymore. I've personally seen it happen with 4 different hunting parties around the land I hunt (and do drives on). They don't drive anymore because the landowner (who used to drive with them) is afraid they'll push his buck off his land.

Loss of property has had a major effect as well. Not to mention the people that used to do deer drives are getting older, and just can't do it anymore.

Does that surprise you Purple? If they can find an orifice to pull it out of, they can find a benefit of APR. If implemented and given a year or two to take root, APRs will also solve our healthcare problem, fix the deficit and put an end to bullying.

If you'd just pass on that perfectly healthy fork, so they can shoot it next year when the rack is larger, all would be well. Whoops, I meant so there is a healthy herd.

I love how the anti APR guys are just ranting with each other and constantly throwing digs at those that support it, even on other threads. It's quite comical to read. Year 4 of APR where I hunt and golly, haven't seen that big buck, especially not behind every tree. I've been out quite a bit over the last two weeks and I have seen numerous small forks and spikes. One watched me as I pulled out my phone, took two pictures of it, and put the phone back on my pocket. I didn't know if he would ever leave. At least I know that he will most likely get another year to wise up, unless some kid is lucky enough to see him. He would have been a great first deer for a youngster.

Unfortunately for some of you change is coming whether you like it or not. It is what it is. I think some of your unwarranted claims and name calling just adds fuel to the fire. Better get organized.

Ok, go ahead, rant away! More importantly, be safe this deer season, legally shoot what makes you happy, and enjoy the time in the woods and with family and friends. I know I will.
