JSK76
Anyone else getting tired of the price increase over msrp on ice gear from these guys? Last year I noticed they were $50.00 higher then SM online price on the Big Volt and I was just looking at the Otter portables and just for an example, there priced 70.00 higher then on Otters HSOforum for the cabin 1200xt! If you live in Mn there's plenty of places to buy for much less then msrp like sometimes hundreds less on something like a high end portable, I've done it before. I'm not complaining about a retailer selling for msrp That's to be expected. I wouldn't be complaining if I didn't have a bunch of points form using there Visa card, I would just go elsewhere. I think its time to look at getting a Visa with cash back. Sorry for the rant, I just had to let it out.
Fowlmouth
Easy option would be to just not shop there. They also will do price matches. Just do your homework when making a big purchase or any purchase for that matter.
highlife4me
They have to increase their prices for the free or $5 shipping that they offer at times. I never buy large items online unless it is a good deal. It is usually cheaper if you can haggle over the price at the store.
JSK76
I didn't realize they did price matching. I wonder how it work when a retailer has a advertised web price that is msrp because the manufacture makes them but then a much lower price when you walk into the store? Would they go off what you can actually buy it for or advertised price? Like actually call the other store.
Fowlmouth
From the times i've had them price match, it has to be a store within a 100 mile range (no online stores) and the item has to be in stock.
Fowlmouth
And yes they will match the exact price as to what the other store has it advertised as.

I have gotten them to price match online prices before, catch them during the week when they arent as busy and the department mangers are good to work with catch them on the weekend when they are running nonstop not a chance
PFUNK
I've noticed their prices are usually higher than most any other retailers as well. The only time I find myself buying things are sale items and bargain cave deals. Regular prices are usually higher than most. I contacted them not long ago when I was buying decoys and they wouldnt match a couple other online retailers. They told me they feel their prices are competitive and that their customer service far exceeds the industry standard. Two different reps told me the same thing. So I purchased the decoys elsewhere for 33% less than the cabelas price and got free shipping. I agree with them about their customer service usually being very good, and I typically dont mind paying a little more for the peace of mind that I get knowing they stand behind their products. But when making a big purchase I wont go through them when their prices arent even in the ballpark. I asked for my concerns to be forwarded to management but never heard anything and arent sure if that was done or not. I'm also considering cancelling the club visa because I could probably save more with another card.
OnAFly
I've found more and more that they don't have what I want in stock. They might have it on the online store, but I much prefer being in person when making purchases, especially clothing.
DLD24
I don't remember the last time I bought something from them...Only time I buy something from a cabelas or gander mountain, etc is when its on sale and I actually confirm its on sale, by looking online...Most "sales are the same price as everywhere else... Most my purchases are from Fleet Farm or Marine General (its right by my house) they will match any price so I give them the business...Now Fleet Farm just needs to come to Duluth darn it
Eric_Kruger
I used to be a die hard c club member.....but they have raised their prices so much i no longer shop there unless I am looking for something they only carry..
CAMAN
C and G are just glorified clothing stores with some hunting and fishing stuff along the walls. I no longer step foot in them unless I absolutely need something, and even then it's a cr@pshoot if they have it or not.
ClownColor
Love cabelas. I'm a bargin cave and sales only purchaser though. Great customer service. Hardly buy in the store, mostly all online. Fleet farm gets more smaller purchase like ammo and lures, lines and that sorts.
Bureaucrat
Cabelas serves their own purpose. They are very good at: *Niche products*Great service*Great return policy*Site to store shipping for free*Ambiance. I love farting around in there. *The occasional epic deal*Great HSOforum*Easy orderingI wouldn't consider buying furniture, a smoked pheasant for $75 or whatever it costs, food, bait, or cheese balls. They have their loss leader products, and their products that pay the bills and people that help out. You really just have to keep an eye on the stuff you want and strike when the planets align. That magical time when they send you a generic coupon for $xx of a purchase of $xxx, your item is also on sale, and you have club points or gift cards handy. I rarely pay full price for big ticket items. If I do, it's usually because I need it now, they have it, and make it easy to get it. That has value to me. I just picked up the new Wooltimate vest online for $59. When I went to the store to pick it up, it was actually full price $110 on the store shelf, and not one of those items that is always on sale. I also picked up some 5.56 American eagle ammo for $8.49 online. When I went to pick it up, it was $9.99 on the shelf. I waited a year for my 1/2 HP meat grinder. They marked it down $100 and I had a coupon. It can be done, but it takes some savvy shopping.
Down2Earth
Plus when your filling up at Cenex every day for gas and getting 2% it's free money to spend on hunting and fishing stuff.
holmsvc
I have got a lot of good deals when things are on sale at Cabelas. I have had no issue with them price matching another store or site. They price matched a $100 difference for me on a pair of binocs that Bass Pro were running a sale on. I generally try to buy big items when they are on sale or stock up on small items like jigs, ice fishing lures, etc when they are in the bargain cave.I live in ND and the closet one to me is 2 hours away, so I order most things online. I have their visa card so I always get $5 shipping. It works out great when I need something and don't have time to drive to Fargo or Grand Forks. I used to be annoyed by their higher prices on some things. I am getting better at shopping for deals and buying things on sale there. I love the place now. I like their Cabelas branded products. They're usually top quality stuff that you can get heavily discounted if they are on sale/clearance.
dfeste
I have to say that bargains can be found if you are patient and able to buy gear in the off season. I've got two pair of pack boots that are Cabelas brand that were bought late winter and I'm happy with both. A few minutes ago I ordered new rain gear. A matter of time before I will be able to check it out but I've got high expectations. All in all I will agree that their prices are higher but you can also get better deals if timing is on your side. Another fan of the World's Foremost Outfitter here. amateurfishing
like most, I like their niche market but 99% of time its only when they have sales. I talked my wife into a late fall lead core set up, she asked me how much n I said well their line counter combos are normally $75 but currently on sale for $50 and her answer was well then go get 2 complete set ups & some little extras with this $20 off $150 coupon. I say holy *&$%U honey, u awesome, so I scored some lead core line & (5) their brand rod cover socks, everyone wins & is happy happy!! it does not happen every day (only twice or 3 times a year) but when it does, its a pretty good score....and I do try and skip the weekends as much as possible as customer service is much better during the week daytime hours. Mr.Seaguar
This is a rare thread where everyone is correct. if you are not careful you will get hosed. But if you are careful you can get awesome gear cheap even. I bought my daughter a set of DryPlus raingear for $140, parka and bibs. That's the same stuff I got myself 10 years ago for $240 tops and bottoms and still use them. The bargain cave is great for large quantities. I buy walleye jigs by the 100 there, last time $7. Another thing I do is buy guns when they have the 12 months no interest. No one wants to pay $1500 for a shotgun but $150 ten times makes it pretty painless. swmndeerhunter
This started out as a thread about the higher prices for portables, so I'll respond on that. If you look in their ice fishing catalog it says "prices include extra shipping charges" or something to that effect. If you take out the shipping charges you are at the MSRP listed on Otter's HSOforum. I've been looking at upgrading my house and I think Reed's shipping in MN is $50 and TB wanted $150 to ship an Otter to me. I think if you realize that, the prices at the "World's Formost Outfitter" aren't out of line, for the portables at least.
Walleyehooker
I have got some great deals in their bargain cave online lately and over the years. Might not be the cheapest but they do have stuff in stock that people actually buy and not just a clothing shop like some others are. Coupons aren't as good as they used to be but at least they still do them.
kfk
I live close to a Cabelas and I buy alot from them online at an online only sale price and have it shipped at no cost for instore pickup. If I'm not mistaken, if the store has an item in stock, they'll also honor the online sales price. I realize that no store will probably be perfect, but I'm glad I live by a Cabela's, although I buy way too much there.
