Wind your own line?

... When I buy a new reel, the store I buy it from does it for me.

Same for me, if they offer I take them up on it. While it isn't a big chunk of change I figure it saves me a few nickels if they spool it up for free.

It may sound a little cliché, but it is kind of therapeutic for me. Same as rigging decoys. I actually enjoy doing it and for some reason I find it relaxing.

Messin' around with your "stuff" is one of the pleasures of being an ourdoorsman; repainting decoys, gun cleaning, patching waders, cleaning and arranging tackle boxes and fly books, de-barbing hooks tying leaders and SPOOLING your own line are part of the enjoyment. Spooling line is not excactly a complicated process!! Do it yourself and you know it is done right.

I usually do it myself so I know its done right. Its all part of the do it yourself things that make you a more of a outdoorsman. I calibrated some line counters this spring and was excited I got them pretty close to the actual count back. Just as stated above i like rigging anything by myself its all part of it.

Many people that spool their own line on spinning reels put it on backwards (figure 8 the line) which causes the line to come off the spool like a slinky.

Bait casters are easy to do correctly as the line must come off the top side of the spool as it goes on the top of the reel being spooled.

Some shops do not know that there is a correct way to do it on a spinning reel either.

gotta do it yourself.

1. grab beer

2. strip old line

3. attempt to tie knot on spool without cheaters

4. find assistant and tell them to grab a pencil

5. start winding, coaching the assistant to put proper tension on spool, maybe scold them from time to time.

6. don't over fill reel like store usually does

7. have left overs for snells

It's as big of a tradition as Thanksgiving. Sometimes I get it on wrong so I just let the line out in the boat while I move about 10 miles an hour and real it back in. Sometimes I get it on the wrong side of the bail and have to start over. It's part of the whole outdoor experience.
