fr0sty
How would you go about collecting urine from any bucks or does you or someone from your hunting party may kill?Fresh deer pee would be the best when compared to store purchased. Just wondering if anyone here collects the urine, and if so, any tips for no covering yourself with it in the process!
huntnfish
When I was young and in the first year or so of hunting my dad would cut the tarsal gland off of the bucks and wipe them on mine and his boots. I didn't ever think it helped. About the only thing I use scents for anymore is to put a little in my shooting lanes on a wick to help position a deer for a shot and take some attention away from me. jentz
The glands will give a scent.Till their dried out anyway.Collecting urine is a different story. It only contains the atracting hormones for a short while, while the animal is either in rut or eusturess.Beyond that you have urine only.not a heavy atractent. pikerliker
Never tried the urine thing. Back in the 90's I shot a doe on opening day and cut the tarsal glands off to let my cousin use by his stand for a lure. About half way through the 1st day that he used them a pair of timber wolves walked by and grabbed the glands off of the bush he had them hanging on and snarfed them down!! So much for the glands. BLACKJACK
How would you go about collecting urine from any bucks or does you or someone from your hunting party may kill? Fresh deer pee would be the best when compared to store purchased. Just wondering if anyone here collects the urine, and if so, any tips for no covering yourself with it in the process! If you really want to collect it just watch as you're gutting the deer, find the bladder with the nice yellow fluid in it, carefully cut it off and dump into an ice cream pail, then funnel it into a bottle. Dump a few drops on your boots to see if a buck tries to jump you Not every deer has a full bladder when shot. A person should really try the tarsal gland thing, collect a few and see if they draw in other deer, I know some bucks are pretty rank when you're getting down to cutting off their junk and reaming out the bunghole. sticknstring
I've got a tarsal from my wife's buck in the freezer awaiting deployment. Pretty sweet smelling yet - those November bucks reek though. Once I get the right wind the last week of October, I'll bury it in a scrape. I've always hung them over scrapes in the past, we'll see what the happens on the ground. Urine is just urine - it'll turn to ammonia in short order. If you want pee, use your own. It'll trigger curiosity the same as any commercial stuff available imo, probably better since it's fresh. If you haven't tried it, give it a try - it works and it's free. fr0sty
Thanks all. Good idea on the bucket. I have always wanted to try a buck tarsal gland, but haven't had access to one yet. As for the "me pee" scent, I do use that in scrapes. I like to freshen them when walking out.
erikwells
Sticknstring, you use your own pee in a scrape? I'm sorry maybe I'm a little bit slow having just gotten back into deer hunting after a 20 year sabbatical from deer hunting. I go so far as to pee in the bottle when I go hunting as to not get "scented". What you said makes sense to me but I can't tell if your pulling my leg or not. Do you really do this and have had it work? I just want to be sure to have a straight answer before I go peeing all over my deer woods. Thanks, Erik

fr0sty
Yes, some people, myself included, pee into deer scraps. Not everyone thinks it's a good idea.
Musky Buck
I don't have a bladder big enough to cover all the scrapes lol. I leave them alone. Little here little there and I could probably wring out my shorts for the rest lol.
sticknstring
I'm not pulling your leg! It works, at least for me. Just make sure to eat a lot of alfalfa and acorns the night before and only drink light beer!
walleyehunter80
Yup put your trail cam on a scrape and pee in it, deer will be there sniffing and pawing at it. I pee right out of my deerstand
Dave
I read an article awhile back about "freshening" up the scrapes yourself using your own pee. Worked for the author and hearing about guys doing it more and more.
skee0025
Ben Koerth, a research associate at the Arthur Temple College of Forestry at Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches conducted a research study on the topic of mack scrapes.. When doing the mock scrape study, he used human urine as the only scentplaced in some of the mock scrapes. His cameras recorded bucks using these mock scrapes, leaving their own calling card on the bare earth. And the research showed that buck visits to mock scrapes dosed with human urine were "not statistically different" from those on which he used buck deer urine.Amazingly, the mock scrapes dosed with human urine drew statistically more deer than the mock scrapes baited with doe deer scent, Koerth said."There is no indication that human urine scared deer at all," he said. erikwells
I have a used pee jug for sale. Only been used 2-3 times. It is olive drab colored and was purchased at Fleet Farm about a month ago. It's been stored in my trunk and is in good condition. Only serious inquiries please, cash only.

bigbucks
I pee out of the stand all the time. I try not to on bow sits, as most are short, but for sure longer ones & gun sits, fire away. I have "freshened" scrapes myself over the years as well.

96trigger
+2, started doing this in the last 5 years, I have seen absolutely no adverse effects to doing it.
McGurk
I made my own scrape last year as a test, with a trail cam on it. Last October, I was out looking for early sign and wasn't finding much. So, I found a natural overhanging licking-branch, grabbed a stick and tore up the ground underneath the branch. I gave it a golden shower and left it alone with the cam to see what happened. It had action within the day, and was regularly checked. There were also new scrapes popping up around the area, much more so than in years past. Last year I would "freshen" up any scrapes I would see on my hikes in and out, and the next day there would be new hoof prints almost every time. I have also read about putting up "rubbing sticks" in an opening in the woods known to have traffic. It is basically a 8 to 10' long, 2"-ish sapling or other fresh wood cutting that you "plant" in the ground with a post hole digger. Some even tie or nail a licking branch on it, but you don't have to, just set a cam on it to watch what happens. I think curiosity can overtake their naturally skittish instincts. Look up "651 rub" and see for yourself.
