Deadliest Catch

I remember several seasons ago Johnathan Hilstrand's son was quitting the boat because he had just had a son and wanted to be home...he said something along the lines of "I don't want to be some old fisherman 30 years from now with nothing but old fishin' stories". Sure enough he's still fishing, and yes, he's divorced.

And yeah, I think the captains are the most unhealthy of the bunch! It makes my lungs hurt watching Sig light up cigarette after cigarette...he must go through 4 packs a day! Captain Phil was a human chimney too...and he drank at least 8 or 9 red bulls a day sick

How Phil was even able to live as long as he did is amazing. That guy ran hard. Sig does rip through those Cigs like crazy. As far as the deck hands, they have to be in decent shape to handle what they do for 20 hours straight.

I don't know how Junior even gets talked to with his attitude towards the other captains. Keith sure took the high road when Jr's guy needed antibiotics and wasn't stocked for it (unaccaptable, by the way, with the work they do). Elliot and Jr deserve eachother. At least the other boats dont pull that bait and switch "help" on eachother. Sig and Edgar are something else, especially when you see the Hillstrand brothers treatment towards eachother. Wild Bill may have pulled the short straw when he signed up for his new boat. This show seems to really like the father/son dynamics as it gets dredged up over and over. It is hard to believe them badmouthing the job and how it pulls you from your family and then the guy's son shows up to work. Then again, maybe it's the only way to see your Dad if he works a boat.

Anyone know what kind of addiction Edgar was batteling before he cleaned up? It's amazing to see the number of veterans explain how being a fisherman has ruined their home lives, but then welcome their young kids to follow in their footsteps.

I was wondering that too, seemed to come out of nowhere. I've watched the show the last couple seasons but not that tuned in.

I can't decide who is the bigger d-bag, Junior or Elliot.

The way Sig talks to Edgar, they must have a lot of history that isn't shown on tv.

Junior

The Sig and Edgar battle seems more like a Father / Son deal than brothers. Sig clearly wants all the control. I was thinking Sig was being too greedy and too much of a control freak until they showed Edgar actually being the Skipper. 24 years on deck but pretty green in the wheelhouse, but hey, he's gettin' em!

this show is still on? criminy. I figured it devolved into the Real Housewives of the Bering Sea by now.

based on the posts I'm reading here, it sounds like it did.

i suppose you spend your time watching teen mom.

A person cannot sit in one position for that long and not expect blood clotting. Just the gravity pressure on your legs sitting causes clots.

Just talk to computer software/coding programmers! grin

Add in an unhealthy lifestyle besides and you can call death when it is needed. Yep, into season 7 and Phil's death was unnerving but not unexpected.

Edgar season 6 while giving the half of one year cupcake to Jake Anderson for sobriety said he had been clean for "XXXXXX" months. Sig in episodes after commented on how much Edgar caused problems not even involved with crabbing so Edgar has some skeletons in his closet with the family outside crabbing.

I was thinking the same thing. I was also wondering of much of the "drama" on this show is just as fake as it is on other shows. They found a good reason to get Jake as captain of a new boat next season.

Like others have said befor.

This is a reality show, they can't be fake.

They're fishermen but they've played actors before on TV...

Jake A is great kid but a massive Drama Queen. He thinks the fight might've ruined his career but the sniveling about it afterward may make people think about him being their boat's Captain. Too unstable for that responsibility.

Wow. This could have been avoided with a little talk around a table beforehand. I feel for Jake A, though. Working and learning to get some skipper time, taking and passing tests for boat licensing, and Edgar takes the boat out instead. Too bad Jake had to blow up like that and that the NWern is losing him, because if Edgar is going to man the helm, who's the new deckboss? I hope to see Jake on the new boat (Kiska Sea?) as he may have reached the point where he has done all he can do under Sig's micro-management style as a captain. Especially with Edgar being the heir apparent to the wheel house.

Junior= backstabber. I get the whole "fend for yourself" but why play all the games with Keith and Elliot? They other capt's may be treating him a little different next week after a little talk on the dock. I wouldn't mind not seeing him anymore.

Pretty uneventful season for the Wizard, and Freddie is an awesome guy to have around. Nice to see him get his life together and thanking Keith.

Wild Bill and the Cape Caution need to iron out some wrinkles, but it will be fine for Opie's. His kid may need a few more slaps upside the head and some ego shrinking, though.

Elliot: A full scholorship to play college hockey? He looks like he's 120 lbs! Everything that comes out of his mouth seems suspect to me... They really didn't play up his Dad onboard until before and after the bulk of the season. We'll see in Opie season, I guess. I wonder if he wears 686 under-roos, too.

It was interesting to see the other side of Junior. It was like Elliot and Junior switched rolls this year.

Maybe he felt that he needed to mix things up for ratings. Or, I wonder if he was always like that and the show purposefully ignored it last season then decided to show it this year. It's just strange. I guess there could be a third option, self medicating.
