I'm not aware of any limit either.

I usually load 3 but think even that is way over kill. Even with 3 it allows you to miss once, hit once, and still leaves you an extra in case you need a finishing shot. If I needed to use all 3 in a single morning of hunting I'd probably call it quits and move on to knitting or quilting. 99% of the time 1 should be just fine.

I use a 303 british and it has a 10 shot clip. I usually only need one but is nice to not have to carry extra shells around all season. Just because you have that many shells doesnt mean you need to use them if you are sighted in correctly.

You guys must not party hunt or hunt areas with multiple tags. I fired 8 shots one time during a sit, missing twice & hitting 4 deer. One I just nicked & my brother shot a few minutes later. Only 1 of the other 3 fell on the first shot. I did gut shoot one with the first shot, but for the most part they were hit well. If they don't go down, keep shooting. Trailing is fun, but only when it's necessary.

I've emptied many a clip of 6. I shoot until the deer is down. Put 4 shots in both 10 pointers I shot the last 2 years, the cost of shells is much cheaper than the long winter of loosing a deer. Good luck and don't be afraid to let some lead fly! grin

I sit in my stand and shake my head when I hear several shots launched off...

1. too many people show up at deer camp assuming guns are on target

2. people shooting at a deer running at mach 3 because they feel they have to shoot.

3. poor shot selection on first shot, and now trying to follow up on a running deer

All poor reasons to have to carry lots of extra shells if you ask me....

Never emptied my rifle in my life... mine holds 1 in the chamber and 3 in the magazine.

Big Al said it very well....

Where are you hunting at this season? Just want to make sure I'm no where near you.

A long winter after loosing a deer is better than a lifetime of living with yourself after your flying lead hits someone you didn't see while shooting at a running deer.

Also, how much usable meat is left after hitting your deer 4 times? You must find the meat pre-ground after what I'm sure is a very messy job of field dressing.

My dad had to use a .30 carbine M1 open sights back in the 60's, he claims during a 1 deer 1 day season that he fired 27 times at a deer before he finally got it, he had a new 30.06 the next year. I saw the deer picture, wow, must have been 3-4 feet of snow at the old farm. Dad said that's what made it so easy to keep tracking him and jumping him until finally. In the last 45 years he hasn't fired more than 1 bullet at a deer since.

Yea, hence the reason I sit and shake my head. Its appalling at how many people are clip emptiers too.

Our neighbors to our west I think could set the world record one of these years. My lord,,,,, a guy would think they are duck hunting over there if u didnt know any different. frickin sad...

From the elders in my hunting camp

1 shot = 1 deer

2 shots = 2 deer

3 shots = No deer

we party hunt BUT- We try to shoot adult does and bucks older than 1.5 years old. I plan on hunting thru the 3rd weekend and am very selective about what I will shoot. I have no problem taging another nice buck for someone but he better be "nice enough to put on the wall"

I am all about giving the guys a chance to hunt- not just show up and fire away. Our group usually is happy with 4 nice deer - we have 8 to 10 hunters in our group.

I also want to be along ways away from you when you are emptying your clip.

Good Luck to everyone

Have a SAFE and Enjoyable Hunt

Steve
