Direct or Dish TV?

I have used both as I switch back and forth every 2 years to get the cheapest monthly fee for a contract.

I do not think it matters as one can get about any and every channel on both.

The one huge thing I do not like about DirectTV is that when it rains heavy, I will lose my signal. I have had different reps from Direct TV out and they cannot seem to correct it. I call the company and they say they are working on a better dish for reception.

never lost a signal once with Dish.

Dish for me only due to the fact one does not lose a signal when it rains hard.

We have dish, our reciever died last thursday, been on the phone every day since then for about an hour at a time. Customer service sucks!! They were to overnignt ship a new one for friday..didn't happen, then Saturday....didn't happen. Then Monday comes areound and we have 3 recievers at our door. Hook one up, no go, our hookup is "special" so today a sevice tech is scheduled to come. wow, only 5 days. one time while on the phone we asked about a new service, well, we could have that in less than 24 hours. If it aint going today, dish is done.

The key is a good dish. The first 6 years with Direct i had a old round dish on the roof and couldn't get more than 78% signal strength no matter what.

Finally I bought my own dish from an online retailer. It was an oblong one with 5 Lnb and with the right tilt, and angle and azmuth, i got it to around 95% on 3 sats. Now it is rare that I loose a signal unless there is a large thunder boomer coming at us from the south.

It's the exact opposite where I live. If a rain drop or snowflake hit the dish, we'd lose Dish Network every time. With Direct TV I've only lost the signal a couple times in the past 3 years or so.

Same for me. I had Dish for 10 years and Direct for the last year. Only thing I miss from Dish was the split screen feature on their dual tuner box.

directv hands down and if you are starting a new service find one of your your friends that has it and say they reffered you and you will both save $10/month for the first 10 months, i have had it for 5+ years now and it will probably be the only tv service i use, its even cheaper than if i would bundle my comcast internet with comcast tv.

I much prefer my Dish over girlfriend’s Direct for one simple reason. Dish’s menu guide has the option to only show me the channels I subscribe. Unless there is a solutions that I’m not aware of, Direct TV drives me nuts. When I see something on the guide that I want to watch, I’m quickly deflated realizing that it’s not a subscribed channel.

On another note, my girlfriend recently wanted to upgrade to HD package. She must have caught the Direct TV service rep on the wrong day as they advised her that it would cost close to $600 for installation and two receivers with DVR. The service rep was non-negotiable and ultimately lost a customer. Unfortunately Dish didn’t work out, as the service rep came by and advised that two trees blocked each satellite configuration. As a result she’s going with cable.

Vote for Dish here. Had service for over 6 years and no issues. Rain fade? You'll get that from both companies and is more of a reflection of the install than anything else.

Your best bet is to look at which channel packages have the channels you want and then compare pricing from there. Some outdoor channels are in the upper tier packages but others aren't. Your monthly bill alone may sway your decision.

Had both in the past but have subcribed to Dish Network for a little over a year now. As far as signal, I only loose signal during thunderstorms, but can still watch any DVR event I have recorded and dont know about On Demand, I'm not hooked to the internet so cant use that feature at all. Other than during thunderstorms (and not all thunderstorms, but most of them) I have no issues with the customer service, signal, billing, etc....

As far as outdoor channels, you get Fox Sports North, OUtdoor channel, Sportsmans channel, and I think there is a newer channel that is mostly outdoor related shows. I got burned out on hunting shows after the first couple months so I dont watch them much anymore, its just antler porn as far as I'm concerened. I have the Top 150 if I remember correctly for about $85 per month now after the initial 1 year discount period. I would reccomend Dish to friends.

Agreed on the rain fade nothing to do with the provider thats an install issue.

I do prefer Direct TV over dish for the most part. Customer service is far Superior and the customer retention division is really helpful. For you Direct TV customers you can call today and get $20 off your bill for 6 months or get a bunch of Movies channels for a reduced price. Just tell them you aren't happy with there INSANE prices and you are thinking of switching to cable or DishNet and they will help you!

in the settings you need to set it to show the channels that you get otherwise it will show you all the channels, it took me about 2 min to set mine up and it only shows the channels i want to see i get way more channels than i watch.

dish network is droping AMC channel, so dtv for me..but it sucks that dtv offers their new custmers lower prices then ups its cost to us who are stuck with old higher contracts .....unless we sell/promote them to our freinds.

I have had both and You can get all of the greatest shows if you pay full premium price for those channel if you want just basic I would go with direct as I have dish and there basic channels are well lets just say I'm not happy with them at all.

I have noticed that Dish goes out way easier that direct did for some reason and not just in the rain if its really windy I'll lose signal also.

was told it was my neighbors trees that wre doing it but they ar dead leafless red oaks so I aint buying that.

I will be going back to Direct in the spring when this contract is up and it won't get here soon enough.

Its called "Favorites Menu" where you create your own menu and select the stations you want to be visible when you scroll thru the channels.

On my old dish that the installer put up, they did a crappy job on the bracing, so a wind would move it slightly out of alignment. They had one screw only half way into a joist and another one thru a soft spot on the shingles so it had sway room. They mounted it over a pop out roof (small area) so when I got my new dish i mounted a 2x12 over the shingles and painted it black and then mounted the dish to the 2x12. with the new dish and a sturdy base it have way better reception. Just sayin' that what may seem firm may indeed be somewhat loose after you go up and tug on it.
