I give the kids money, tell them to treat her to a mother's day breakfast and when I get home, I take them out to a dinner. My wife is fine with that since I go with guys I was in Iraq with. She knows opener has been a tradition for many years before we got married and she is fine with that.

I havent been into the opener for a number of years. Grew up on a lake and we could always walk down to the dock and head out - and that was great. Now, its different. Trailering boats, increased traffic on Friday afternoon and also usually poor fishing - because it always seems to be about 2 weeks early before the bite starts. However, now we have this strange warm Spring. I really wonder if the opener might be a better one than usual with the early warmer Spring. It will be interesting to see how it all pans out - but I must say - I am getting interested in the possibility of a partaking in a good old midnight Minnesota fishing

before my mom died she lived in northern mn on the lake I fished. It was perfect I never missed Mother's Day and her only request was fresh walleye on Mother's Day.

Now I just take my wife and two kids with me and we have made it an annual event. I spend plenty of weekends with my buddies and just adjusted to make everyone happy. The girls shop, fish a bit, and just hang out and my son and I usually hit the lake pretty hard. We moved one of our "buddy" weekend to the next week and the fishing is rarely worse than I experienced on Opener.

When I proposed to my wife, I must have been a bit cocky, because I brought up the fact that I loved hunting and fishing almost as a condition to us getting married. Two kids later and 18 years and I think that condition has been set aside by both of us we just work things out.

In Minnesota it's actually the exception when the walleye opener is not on mothers day weekend. I'm jealous of you guys who have wives who don't care if you fish it (or the ones who actually like to fish themselves). As for me that's one weekend where I don't do a trip anywhere. I just fish local on Saturday.

For those of you who walleye opener is a tradition. I get it. However for those of you who have not started a tradtion, let me give you a suggestion. How about the weekend after opener? Less, traffic, almost every resort has openings. If you get up there on Friday you can actually fish for walleyes and not have to wait for Saturday. One week later can be a blessing on the late spring years. School is still in session so you still have an excuse to not bring the kids (I love fishing with the kids but having a trip where I get to be a kid instead of a parent is worth its weight in gold for me) This year makes 19 years we have been doing it. The date is still set by the DNR...we just go one week later. I think it has made us best friends with the resort owner as we bring up a good size group of guys between opener and Memorial weekend.

Plus it is like never Mother's day on that weekend.

Great now you can plan ahead stop in say Happy moms day to her the weekend before.

Thats what cell phones are for.

Its been this way for as long as I can remember and I don't know how many years I have made the call to mom on the way home from opener.

Its not the first time and I know it won't be the last.

Real Minnesota mothers under stand that it is fishing opener and they, well at least mine understands that.

Yeah, this is a non-issue for those of us who have understanding mothers...and no wife.

But my dad has never had a problem getting away. In fact, I know for certain that my mom looks forward to some "alone time" while he's away. Absence can also be a present. smile

Why don't we walleye FM'ers ban together and get the legislature to move Mother's Day to another month. My recommendation would me the Sunday after the Super Bowl. That way the queen of the house and our real moms would get two holidays in one week Valentines Day and Mother's day. They should really feel appreciated after all that attention. I'm open to suggestions.

Quote:
Maybe GOP and DFL legislators can agree on ‘Mom’s Amendment’

Amid all the often-angry talk surrounding such issues as taxes, gaming, the stadium, education funding, Voter ID and bonding, Sen. Tom Bakk this morning introduced a bill that will really matter to most Minnesotans.

The Senate minority leader is proposing to move up this year’s fishing opener one weekend, from Mother’s Day weekend, to May 5 and 6.

He’s calling this bill “Mom’s Amendment,” because it takes away the motherhood-fishing conflict that arrives when the two special weekends coincide.

Bakk said he’s making the proposal for a number of reasons. The mild weather created a horrible winter for North Country resort owners.

The combination of little snow and bad ice meant huge reductions in winter tourism. The mild winter also means ice is out on most lakes across the state, meaning anglers will be able to get their boats on to lakes that often would still have an ice covering in late April and early May. Additionally, the warm weather created an early walleye spawn on most lakes.

Rep. David Dille, DFL-Crane Lake, was expected to push forward the early-opener in the House.

Although the DNR commissioner has not yet weighed in on the idea, it’s hard to imagine there’ll be any opposition.

Mother's Day is not a national holiday, nor a state one for that matter. It was concocted by the candy and flower marketeers to make more money. If it really is a problem, then switch Father's Day and Mother's Day. Also, if someone comes up with "Mother-in-Law's Day" on the opening of deer hunting, are you going to change opening of deer season too? Come on! Give me a break! Opening of fishing is Saturday, and Mother's Day is on Sunday. Time to do both if necessary.

+1

My mom, like many other Minnesotan mothers, knows that opener means I wont be around for the weekend, I call her sunday morning on the way to the lake and wish her a happy mothers day and go fishing. My brother I take her out for supper after we get back from the lake and she couldnt be happier.

Now, the tough part is getting my fiance to come to terms with me being gone for the weekend.. crazy

I'll plan to be outta state that weekend if they make a "Mother-in-laws Day" grin
