How long to gut a deer?

Recommended Posts

I start on the "business" end and work up from there. Start to finish, less than 10 minutes to get it gutted. I have gotten so much better over the years. Think it took me about 2 hours to gut my first one. LOL

I can usually gut a deer in about 5-7 min. I start between the legs and go up opening the belly, then the brisket ( if you go that high) cut the wind pipe and upper clean. Cut the diaphram then go down to the pelvis bone saw that apart and cut the butt out then pull everything out. Sounds simple and it really is but I have gutted tons of deer and have gotten really good at it.

i start from the center of the rib cage where it ends and work myself down carefully not to cut anything inside the cavity. i take my time so i cant give a definate time. i cut through the ribs after i take the major gut pile out. i also cut the bone between the rear quarters so all the stuff comes out and the inside is clean. i also take the tenderloins out and put them in a zip bag. i also wear plastic gloves. good luck.

It takes me no time at all. I have convinced my nephews that they need the experience gutting, so they do it while I watch and give advice! Never really timed it, but if I had to guess, I suspect they actually have it down to about 40 minutes or so. I just wish they could remember to spend some time sharpening their knives; more often than not, they end up using my knife. I'm about to add a sharpening stone to my packing list and make them sharpen knives Friday night before they can have a beer. Drastic, I know, but what's that old saying about drastic measures?!

This is pretty close to my version. Other than I start at the bottom of the ribs & open the chest cavity very first & the wind pipe before working my way down. That time is about right, once you actually start. I get everything layed out & the deer position just the way I want it, get the gloves on etc., once I start then it's just "git her done". I would agree the size & age of the deer affects the time. Fawns I just split with my knife & don't even bother with the pelvic saw. I've broken a knife & bent another one splitting older deer, so I use the saw on them. If it's dark or close to it, it always takes less time...

Gutting a fawn is always quick and easy, especially when someone helps. But I'm sure he could do a full size deer almost as quickly.

Takes me under 5 minutes. I use a special knife that literally unzips them from the ribs to the pelvis. I cut around the anus and pull that through without splitting the pelvic bone. Then I cut along side the breast plate up to the neck to gain easy access to the organs. Severe the windpipe and separate the diaphragm and it rolls out. My brother is faster than I am.

Have any of you guys used that "butt out" tool they got and if so, it is worth it? I've got one and tried to use it last year when I got my buck but it seems like more trouble than it's worth. Anyways, just wanted to hear folks' thoughts on it.

3 more days...3 more sexy days.

I could probably do it in about 10 minutes, but we always have a couple of beers when we're doing it, so it takes a little longer. Start from the ribs and work down. I read earlier that someone else wears gloves, I do too, shoulder length! I don't have to worry about getting anything on my shirt sleeves and can just go. Just makes cleanup that much easier

Takes me about 10-15 minutes depending on how motivated I am. First one I did took about an hour or so.

I have one of those butt out tools, but I've never used it. Seemed like a good idea once upon a time, but is probably more hassle than it's worth.

One of my nephews bought one a couple years ago and tried it. It was a waste of good money IMHO. He hasn't used it since. Besides, it made my butt pucker watching him use it LOL

If I don't stop to talk too much, less than 5 minutes easy. Cut the butt hole out, open up the belly, get one side of diaphragm (sp?) cut, cut out wind pipe area, roll deer over, cut other side of diaphragm and remaining connecting tissue while letting the gut pile roll out. Left out a lot of details, but that's the general idea of how I do it.

Give me 8 to 12 minutes to gut. I'm pretty peticular on not damaging any meat, and doing a clean job (No hair, dirt, etc). I would say whether it takes me 8 or 10 minutes, 5 of it is carefully cutting out the anus. I don't mess around breaking the hip bones anymore...I do remember the first time gutting a buck by myself, probably the better part of an hour...and most of that was just confused looks on my face grin

Now a days i'll step in and gut others deer so we can keep the show on the road! By the time they get those ugly plastic gloves on, the deer is done.
