Hockey, its a typical 5x6 witha 1 1/4in point at the base of the antler.

The hole in the antler is from a stick that must have become lodged in the antler during velvet.

The spread is <17"

So when do we get the offical gross score? Wide range of guesses here so it will be interesting to see.

Great deer with alot of character! The pictures make it difficult to get a good perspective of the size of the deer, but I would think that he goes over 140" gross (mid 40's maybe). He has great beam mass, but most of that is at H3 & H4 making it difficult to reach over 40" of mass. I'd be suprised if either main beam goes over 20" and if any any tine is longer than 8". This is one of those deer that grew more bone than he'll get due credit for

I would say he's amazingly similar to the 14 I shot last year, that grossed at 154 1/2. (One in my avatar.) I think this one's mass is perhaps just a hair less, but not much. I'm going to say 146-149". Heck of a buck, shoot him in a heartbeat. This one isn't quite as wide, shorter main beams, but some of the tines are longer, mine has short tines.

That hole in the right antler is interesting yet disgusting at the same time. I hope it's not from a long range rifle shot this summer.

Nice deer with lots of character no matter what.

I shot a buck with a similar hole a couple years back, I suspect the deer caught a stick in its soft velvet during the summer so that might be the case here.

If that deer had a 20 inch spread, most people wouldn't bat an eye at it hitting 150.

I think this is an accurate statement, that big spread might look more impressive but doesn't alwasy add a lot to the score. This deer has everything going for it but spread.

For a hint, go to the other deer hunting thread "Let's see your shoulder mounts". Dinnerpail is showing his deer and his scoresheet. That may help some of you with an educated guess.

For laughs, I will chime in at 148. You can send my prize in the mail later.

That hole we've shot several over the years with that, generally they've been like 3.5 or 4.5 year old bucks, speaking of old bucks the old bucks in our hunting party claim after several old milwaukee's that the hole would be a non-typical drop tine if it would've made another year. But, my guess is damage during velvet, sharp stick kinda makes it hollow out. Nice buck, no clue on the score, I'll go 140 net.

every where i go measure someone always says "only give me the gross score, i don't believe in deductions, the deer deserves every inch of antler it grows". O.K so i measure the antlers, the inside spread is 18" and the right side is 60" the left is 62" and side to side difference is 4".

The guy comes back and i tell him the gross is 122" and the net is 136".

"that can't be" he says "the gross is always bigger than the real score"

then i say " you wanted all the antler counted thats what i did " he says "what about the inside spread?" i say "thats air not antler".

Side to side difference is for symetry and gives credit to antlers that grow perfect (or more symetrical). inside spread "credit" gives you an idea how the rack grew and to credit back, and then some in most cases, what was deducted in the difference column.

Personally net scores are worthless to me. Air is air but when it comes to bucks 21 inches of air is far more impressive than 14 inches of air when you see the animal so I add that up too. I think it's fair to say the hunters have spoken and we will take the gross score, the record keepers can keep their records. They only keep track of some of the deer anyway so it's hardly a comprehensive list.

I've been very fortunate to have harvested 2 good bucks, one is a clean 8 that grosses 142 and nets 140, the other is a 14 point that grosses near 170 and nets mid 140's, if these 2 deer were side by side I don't think the close net scores would matter, the 14 is much more impressive to the eye.

I do agree to a certain extent, gross score doesn't paint the whole picture, but neither does net, if you want to know a score to a deer you should get both. Someday I hope to care what my buck nets, when he's close to 170.
