How has your Walleye fishing been so far?

Recommended Posts

Now that we are on the second half of summer and people are starting to talk about hunting, lets talk about our fishing, Walleye fishing.

How would you say it's been for you? Anybody got a new personal best or had any exceptional days on the water?

So far this year I have fished some of the great lakes waters and have started to like pulling 5+ pound fish out of the water! That's a rush you never get over.

I've had some great days on the water, New personal bests, overall increase in success rates; i'll put the majority of my success on the addition of side imaging. One of my biggest feats is consistently putting the hurt'n on suspended walleyes this summer.

New PB also. Lot more eyes then the past year. Best part for me this year was learning a new lake and catching plenty of fish. I also discovered quit a few areas on others lakes I've overlooked in the past.

Very succesfull year...so far!

I've done more walleye fishing this year since I first got into muskie fishing. Hardly done any muskie fishing because the walleye fishing has been so good this year on Lake of the Woods . Biggest fish this year was a 30 incher out of Buffalo bay. Had the most success with spinners/bottom bouncers.

Overall, I have to say it has been a banner year for eyes. No personal bests but plenty of good eats. Caught them throwing cranks, trolling cranks, slip bobbing, jigging, working swimbaits, dragging leeches, jigging minnows. I haven't taken much time to pull live bait rigs but with the fish moving deeper it is that time. I think the cooler water temps later into the season helped keep the bite going longer. I'm looking foreward to pulling cranks on Mille Lacs this fall with a couple of good friends.

Been a tough year on the upper St. Croix for me with the frequent rains and runoff. There is so much floating debris and so much sand suspended in the water that the bite has been off most of the summer but the good news is that downstream it has been a very good bite throughout the lower St. Croix with alot of sauger and walleyes on the chew. A few adjustments need to be made for the higher water and caution used with the floating debris but most of the pleasure boaters will take care of that:)

It was a slow spring on Erie. The winds started blowing the first week of April, and didn't stop until the second week of May. I'm talking constand 20-30 mph NE winds. Turned the lake to pure mud. Once they stopped, the crank bite was on with a vengance. There were many 40+ pound bags ( five fish), for the MWC, inclusing a 46 pound sack weighed in. June was awesome on the sandbar, and July was incredible in the Geneva area, with fish averaging 7-8 pounds. It's still going strong. Looks like the fall bite will be incredible.

High water on our lake has made fishing interesting at best this year. I have been able to catch better fish this year but numbers are down. All my normal haunts are either way to deep or there is new structure they are keying on due to the high water.

For me the numbers are down but the quality is up. Mostly because I have devoted more time to fishing big fish. I am also taking the time the learn a new section of the Mississippi River so there is a considerable amount of water to check out and poke around in. The nice thing is the water has been up all summer so I will have some good starting areas next spring and can hopefully cash in on them.

This is embarrassing to write, but this has been a very frustating, unproductive season to this point. I am beginning to believe that I/we(my brother and I) have lost our ability to catch, not only walleyes, but to catch anything. Half the time, we can't even catch a sunfish. Pretty pathetic, after enjoying so many good seasons fishing waters that aren't often considered good walleye waters. If it weren't for my annual trek up to Leech Lake, this would have to go down(so far) as one of my worst seasons in the past 15 yrs. We begin each trip with great enthusiasm, but end up frustrated and wondering why we even went. We try to pick lakes that are about halfway between us to even out drive times, mostly fishing the Hutch. area. I guess we will have to venture somewhere else or pray for a great Fall fishing recovery. Anybody else having an "off" year? Just wondering! Good Luck out there this upcoming weekend.

NO PB's for me this season but that would have to go 12#'s so not to likely.

As far as total eye count since the opener, looks like this is the best season I have had to date ever for eyes.

Slow last night trolling but we did pick up a few eaters.

Hoping for a great fall bite.

It's been a solid year for me. My biggest for the year going 29.25 while netting a 31". Pool 4 has been strong all year. Our week at winnie was great and I learned new parts of the lake. It's our first season with a family cabin on Vermilion and its been fun learning that lake. We have had some nice fish fries out of a lake in which I've been told the bite is tough. Can't wait to see what a good bite looks like. I feel like I've learned a lot. I've gone out of "my box" and learned and/or strengthened some techniques and had great success with them. I'll be doing much more fall fishing this year compared to the past.

Frankly, I had an average year, in part because I missed about five weeks of prime fishing due to weddings, funerals, BWCA trips, etc. The river here (around ST Cloud) finally went down this week, so I did get out to whack a few this week. Can't wait for the fall bite, though. Best time of the year!

My year has been terrible, new area for me not many walleye lakes to choose from haven't caught any over 14'', so frustrating. I've had to move onto fishing different species, which is good but my year would be complete catching a walleye over 17'', with all hopes fall will be better. I have a small boat so the larger walleye factories are out of the option for me.

    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
