This will ruin your day of ice fishing

Just tell your wife that that kind of thing only happens out in Utah and that she shouldn't worry about it in Mn because its always so cold here.

I would drop a deuce in my pants if I was out there. I thought walking and hearing cracks was bad enough my first couple times out, but that would be too much. Id be off running for shore as fast as possible

first of all the guy said 4 in. that may be ok on a small lake you know on foot near shore but it seems like they were way out there. second of all they should of dragged a small boat out there with them like they do on superior north shore. third of all there would be no way i would of gone out there in the first place. good luck.

'gee, and that was a good hole' one of them said. Looked like they abandoned the beer. Candidates for population control IMO. The guys behind the photographer also just kept on fishing. Maybe it's not that deep and they could walk back?

Happened to us last spring on Red. The ice was still 12 inches or better but it was getting kind of iffy by shore. We went out in an F150 one chilly morning and by the time it warmed up and the wind started we had big openenings. We called a friend and he brought out 2x8 oak planks and we drove that old ford across 4 different openings to get off the lake that evening. The widest we went across was 5 feet. Dumb move on our part. The funny thing about it was that morning we were fully prepared to walk out and once we seen that the ice out of the landing was still intact we high fived each other and laughed our simple butts out onto the ice. We walked out the rest of the season.

There is plenty of warning signs that the conditions were good for such a large ice shift to occur. The thin late ice sheet, wind is the biggest clue. I would bet there was open water on the downwind side of where they were at long prior to this.

Spooky stuff there for sure, and a situation that could have been avoided.

Goodness; I would have been a vapor trail to shore. I can't believe how laid back they were. stepping over the crack and standing near the edge like it is not a big deal. kind of strange. I was yelling at my computer. Get out of there!
