We bought a dyson about 7yrs ago and love it! i know it sounds dumb but it was a great investment. It cost $600 back than. I know i know its alot of money but we use it every other day easy. We have three indoor outdoor dogs and a kid with allergys so we have to. It does a awsome job and like the ad says, it doesnt loose suckshion. (mispelled). We did look at the "ball" dyson and its tiny compared to the one we have. Ours is purple in color. just tring to help

Dyson all the way. Ours is about 7 too, and hasn't really lost any of its performance. Ours is the purple one too, I believe it is the Dyson Animal. Worth every penny. IMO, it even cleans the air. Seriously. When the filter within the container gets plugged with all the dirt it sucks up, I take it outside and clean it with my leaf blower. Voila, new vacuum again...

Our new house does not have a central vac, so we needed to buy one. Dyson sucks!! Really, it really sucks. I was very surprised what it picked up after we vacuumed with the old central before we moved. Bought it on black Thur and we are more than happy.

Dyson -1. We have the same one (animal) and we hate it. Heavy, and it's REALLY hard to push. I've had Dyson on the phone a couple times and can't get it to work right. I wouldn't buy another...

Thats very strange that it is hard to push. confused

We have the purple one and at first I thought it was just OK but then I found out that you need to clean ALL the filters and not just empty the clear tube. Once I did that it was like a new machine. We have the attachment that cleans fur off the couch and that is really a slick deal.

If you want to get on the cheap you should go a Hoover bag model that runs right around $225.

Another big vote for Dyson!!

I was very reluctant to spend that kind of money on a vacuum, but the wife finally talked me into it as we put new carpet in the basement and have 2 labs and 3 cats in the house (anyone want a cat or 3??). I bought a Dyson Animal DC25 (the ball) for $300 on c list and it was pretty much new.

This vacuum cleans up pet hair great. It can be used on solid surfaces by turning off the power brush, or carpet. This is a nice feature because our main level is pretty much all hardwood floors. The vacuum is light and the ball system makes it very maneuverable. The attachment (hose) system is quick and very easy to use as far as getting the hose off the machine, and stoes in a matter of a second. I hate to say it, but I actually don't dread vacuuming now that we have one. Before we got rid of our old Kenmore Canister I did the carpets with it. I then went back over with the Dyson and was very surprised how much more stuff came out of the carpet.

Wow, can't believe how popular the dyson is. Only two other brands have been mentioned and none have been hoover, bissell, eureka, oreck and so on. We live in a townhome with no animals so we won't need the bigger dyson that many of you have, but we will look at some of the other models.

I'd look at some other ratings/reviews before I shelled out that kind of money. I know, in the past, at least, other vacuums (cheaper) have beat Dyson head-to-head. Not saying the Dyson is a bad vacuum, but I think you can do better for less money.

Of course, I don't buy vacuums because I have a mother-in-law that always has to have the latest and greatest, so we get her hand-me-downs smile

We have a:

Eureka 5892 4D Boss Upright Bagless Vacuum Cleaner

It works very well, picks up amazing amounts of cat hair. We vacuum every week and it'll fill the entire canister before we're done, and we dont even have all that much carpet (mostly hardwood).

But:

If I were going to buy a new one, and had the funds, I'd buy a Dyson.

This is the one we have. I think my wife got it on super clearance for about $100, so I'm not sure if its still made.

Go to the Carpet and Rug Institutes's HSOforum. Look under vacuum cleaners, they test and rate various vacuum cleaners-both residential and commercial. They test them for soil removal, dust containment and carpet fiber retention. Then they rate them. These tests are performed by an Independent Testing Lab.

Vacuum Cleaner Testing Criteria

Two categories of SOA/GL Vacuum Cleaners to be listed on the CRI HSOforum:

Vacuum Cleaners Certified for Household Use

Vacuum Cleaners Certified for Commercial Use

Household Use Vacuum Cleaner Program:

Performance Standard: Soil Removal Dust Containment

Bronze 40 - 49% ≤ 100 µg/m3 of dust particles

Silver 50 - 54% ≤ 100 µg/m3 of dust particles

Gold ≥ 55% ≤ 35 µg/m3 of dust particles

Texture Protection Standard: The vacuum should not affect the texture appearance of the carpet more than a one-step change based on one year of normal vacuum use.

XRF Carpet Test Samples:

30 oz/sy residential loop pile carpet

25 oz/sy residential cut pile carpet

Commercial Use Vacuum Cleaner Program:

Performance Standard: Same as Household Use Program above.

Texture Protection Standard: Same as Household Use Program above.

XRF Carpet Test Samples:

30 oz/sy commercial loop pile carpet

30 oz/sy commercial cut pile carpet

Notes:

A Vacuum Cleaner must comply with the Texture Protection Standard before being considered for a Bronze, or Silver, or Gold SOA/GL certification.

A Vacuum Cleaner must comply with both the corresponding Soil Removal Standard and the Dust Containment Standard before being considered for a Bronze, or Silver, or Gold SOA/GL certification.

Last time I checked not a single dyson was on the list.

Any of you that use a dyson on longer nap carpet notice the upper portions of the twists-untwisting/blooming??? That's the "Texture Retention" part of the rating.

We have a dirt devil featherlight bagless w/HEPA. It works pretty good, but to tell you the truth I hate emptying the cannister two times per session. And I have to empty it outside into a paper bag (anyway) to avoid dusting the indoor air. The Hoover, even though it's kind of steep, sounds good to me now.
