Best Day of My Life!

Recommended Posts

First of all, i need to say thanks to everyone who helped me in my venture this fall. Especially MinnBones, and ArcherySniper... i appreciated all the encouragement guys!

This falls moose hunt started way back during this past spring. i was talking to a few buddies and the topic of the moose lottery came up. they encouraged me to apply.

Long story short, my dad and i applied as group. and got picked on our FIRST TRY!

i was pumped...but now i need to do a lot of leg work and make a lot of phone calls!

i had always dreamed of going moose hunting; but that was in the future...i now had less than 5 months to plan and successfully execute a once-in-a-lifetime minnesota moose hunt!

pops and i watched lots of videos on calling moose and boy am i glad we did!

Moose Opener was scheduled for October 2nd. but we opted to Not hunt that opening weekend. Hoping to avoid unseasonably warm temps, we scheduled our hunt to take place from Oct 8th Thru Oct 17th.

We arrived in our remote campsite late evening on Oct 7th, only to find it already occupied.

so.....we had to enact plan b! We set up camp, and we ready to hunt!

Oct 8th...our first morning hunt was a great hunt! the temperatures were warm, even for us, not to mention for a moose.

needless to say we didn't see much; only thing we really say was a couple whitetails cruising across a clear cut, and a red fox! IMG_0076.jpg

Oct 9th. Our second day of the hunt, resembled the first day almost exactly. warm temps and not much movement. we talked to another group of moose hunters who had been in our area since Oct 2nd and had only seen one cow the entire time.

Oct 10th.. 10/10/2010 a day that will not soon be forgotten.

Our morning began with a hot cup of coffee made over our camp stove. Our friend, solomon, had come with us on this trip. tho he was bowhunting for whitetails and bird hunting in the afternoons. he's been a friend and constant hunting companion for nearly ten years. IMG_0122.jpg He decided to come with us on this particular morning. smile boy was he in for a treat.

The air was crisp. As soon as we stepped out of the camper, we knew it was going to be a good day. We began the mile and half hike into a secluded clear cut.

just before day break; i broke the early morning silence with a cow call. i cupped my hands and let our two calls. CRUNCH!!!!!! CRUNCH!!!! CRUNCH!!!

a bull made his presence known. slowly but surely he made his way through the spruce and tamarack swamps. we could not see him but we could hear his every step and the guttural grunts he made with every step!

i let out a couple more calls, and soon we had TWO bulls coming in. one from the south east and the other from the west!

the first bull arrived in the cut; and it was decision time.... harvest this bull, or wait for the second bull and see if he is bigger!?!?!?!

well the first bull made our decision pretty easy. he swayed in, closer with every step, until he reached about 70 yards from me and 30 from my dad. he put on quite the show! unbelievable!

i looked at my dad, who was sitting with our buddy solomon, about 40 yards from me.

i was looking for a "thumbs up" or "thumbs down" on taking the bull..i read his lips "Shoot him"

i raised up my .270, and squeezed. BOOM! then BOOM; my dads .270wsm cracked in the early morning air. Our bull hunched up, took about three steps and did a back flip!

my emotions got the best of me at that moment, and i let out a Wooowhoooo!

our ten day hunt was over...less than 35 min into the Third Morning! It all happened so fast!

i know he's not an Alaskan trophy bull; but he's our bull! (i've got my whole life to go to alaska)

and i couldn't be happier; i'm very thankful that i was able to share this hunt with my dad!

Congrats are in order grin Very nice bull. It truly is the hunt of a lifetime. Nice job. The warm temps make the moose run for the spruce swamps very early in the day.

I still remember our 2006 moose hunt.

You will remember every aspect of your hunt for many years.

Awsome

Steve
