2nd marriages

I got engaged earlier this month and this will be second marriage for both of us. I was going to propose on a fishing outing, but weather/schedule kept interrupting. Wondering if any of you have gone down the aisle in a full blown wedding for the second time; or since you've been there done that did something low key like doing it front of JP and have a reception party. We are not looking to spend a whole lot of money. We've thought of having wedding/reception in same ballroom to keep it simple and costs down. Ever had or been to a reception with an outdoor/fishing theme? Any tips to keep costs down like in catering, or renting a place would be appreciated.

My current wife and I got married next to the lake by the JP then a friend grilled elk steaks and walleyes for the reception. We were supposed to get married on the lake but Ma Nature changed that plan for us... This was both our 2nd time my first was a full blown Catholic wedding and I wouldn't recomend that LOL BTW the whole on/by the lake thing was my wifes idea....

Recently married and I'm still on my first one, but I'll throw in my 2 cents.

We did it Vegas style for the legal bit and then threw a party in the backyard for the relatives awhile later. PO'ed half the family (they wanted an open bar ;)) , but screw em - it wasn't their wedding and they weren't paying for it. And we had a 16gal keg of primo on ice for the backyard bash and most of them had enough to forget they were mad laugh

Ultimately though, why are you even asking this question on here? You are gonna do what ever it is that your future wife tells you is gonna happen.

Even the second time around it isn't cheap. Carol and i were married in march.Between family and very close friends we still had around 110 people for our reception. We served roast pork, mashed potato's green beans in mushroom soup, and dinner rolls. We cut our cost for the meal by buying the pork(74#) during a truck load sale at a groc. store near hear. The instant potato's we got thru the local grocery. ( we talked to the owner with our list of all the things we wanted to buy from him, and asked what kind of a deal he could make us. We save there too) We did our own cooking the day before, then placed it all in a big refrigerator at the country club where we held the reception and dance. ( i'm on the country club board so got a price break on the rental, plus they usually make a deal on drinks and beer for you.) Then the day of the wedding, everything went back into roasters about 2:30 to warm for the meal about 5:30. The dinner rolls and cakes came from a barkery near here. They gave us a small price break also. Had friends and family do the serving. The gals decorated the country club themselves.

The wedding was at Carols' church with just our families. We did our own pictures and such.

Ours got a little spendy cause we bought the jackets for the gals, and shirts and ties for the guys.( we wanted all the gals to be dressed similar, and the guys to have matching shirts and ties. She has five kids and i have two!) Most are in thier 20's and older. That way people new they were our kids!

Im guessing we spent around $3000.( not including the clothes for our kids and Carols' grand kids)

I might be biased:) but my wedding to my current wife was about the best one I've been to. AND cheap:)

We got married at Palisade head, where we'd had our first date:) If you don't know it, it's one of the most beautiful spots in MN...a couple miles north of Silver bay on the north shore, and about 200 feet above lake Superior, with a view as far as the eye can see across the big lake. Our reception was in a pavillion at Split Rock lighthouse (I think the "rent" there was 20.00!) We did cater the food, but even with that we only spent about 1,500 all told:)

Me and my wife were married on the shore of lake superior at gooseberry falls state park. Made a beautiful back drop and great pictures at the falls when you can get the yahoo tourists out of the shot. We rented the building down by the lake and picked up the parking cost for guests. It was very affordable.

It's your wedding, do it the way you guys want to and to heck with everyone else. Weddings are way overpriced. Heck, you can take a guided bass trip to El Salto for less than a cheap wedding, and probably have more fun.

There's your honeymoon.

A certified Coast Guard Captain can marry you with the proper license available from the local county seat. So you can do it on the water cheap if one wish's. I have friends whom can and do offer this here on the Red River for instance....they have 17 booked for this summer. You could sneak in some catfishing too. LOL smile

She really liked it there. This was one of our dates that we visited. Not sure if we want to do something that far away, but we both love the "Up North" atmosphere.

abso f-n lutley!

my first marriage was a huge silly thing.

my current one we invited only the important people in our lives and rented the back room of a nice bar. I think we only paid about $1800 for the whole mess.

we spent our money on the honeymoon

Traditional weddings are over-hyped.

You can have more fun and a more memorable celebrating your new marriage with friends and family by having a bit of creativity tailored to both of your interests laugh

I like the idea of an outdoor party with a few kegs and grilling some delicious food. I'd have that any day over renting a dance hall.

Of course dressing uniquely for the occasion is certainly a requirement. I recommend matching camo tux and dress.

I can't help, just starting to work on my first marriage. But I can certainly complain about the cost of the wedding. We're just starting to research the costs for the ceremony and reception. I have a big family - so feeding a group of 200 people sure adds up quick. And don't even get me started on booze - they mark up a keg of lite beer like it's liquid gold.

Honestly, the only reason we're looking at a traditional wedding and reception is because we'd both like our grandparent's to be there.

I got divorced in may, and when we got married in 02, I paid for it. Whatever happened to the brides dad paying for it? Almost everyone I hear talking about weddings paid for it themselves.

Those are the old days. Lots of people have to save up for their weddings these days. Lots of single parent families these days as well.

My wife and I went the Vegas route with a small reception at her parents house when we returned. We've been married 13 yrs now and have outlasted many friends with the traditional wedding who are now divorced (at least that one expensive day was happy...). We wouldn't change it for anything; we used the money we would have spent on a wedding and used it as a down payment when we bought our first house instead grin

Seems like everyone is talking about their 2nd, well I tested the 3 strike rule. We went to Watertown SD with one other couple. Great ceremony at the motel we stayed at, great dinner (steak and lobster) at a place no longer there called Spade Cooleys. Didn't have any live music at the supper club so the bartender slipped me a roll of quarters and we played every song on the juke box. Everybody said it would never last, being my 3rd strike. This August 25th it will be 32 years. Gained a wife and a tremendous fishing partner, she can even bait her own hook....lol After 32 years she is still my best friend. good luck on the 2nd or 3rd time around the block you just never know when you'll hit the lotto....... blush

I've got my 38 anniversary coming up in August. A while back I asked my wife if she would like to have a big party and renew our vows when 40 years rolls around. She says to me.......I never forgot my vows and I don't think you did either. Everyone we know knows we're married so what's the big deal. If you want to do something meaningful take me to Italy for dinner. Mama Mia we will be there. So do what ever you decide make sure you celebrate your way.

Fishgutz makes a good case for a boat upgrade! JK

Congrats hope your day (and the marriage) goes well.

Best advice I ever got was: The weddding is a day the marriage is everything after, so for the wedding use only these 3 answers...

1. Yes dear.

2. No, I like your idea better.

3. Who do I make the check out to?

these 3 will make the day better for her (and you) and get the marriage off on the right foot. Congrats again.
