shnelson
This is kind of a spin off of the favorite beverage thread. I wanted to start preparing some meals this winter when I bring my nephew or any newcomers on to the ice to show them a good time. Whats your favorite thing to cook up? I've got a smaller charcoal and gas grill that I like to use - made up some marinated steak bites one year and they were a real treat! What's your choice? Extra points for fillet recipes! TylerS
Fresh pickled pike, venison sausage and home-made goose jerky. No need to heat, just eat (well, the sausage is better warm, but its good cold, too).Otherwise if you simply MUST cook something, nothing wrong with straight up shore (err...ice) lunch. Fry up some potatoes with onion followed by the fish (battered in flour, salt, and pepper). Simple, quick, tasty.Top it off with a frosty beverage of choice (Lakemaid perhaps? appropriate since you're fishing) or some good ol' Root Brewski for the youngins.Truthfully, I'm never hungry when I go ice fishing. Honestly, I can sit sun-up to sundown without nary a growl from my stomach. When I'm done and get home, well...that's a different story! WalleyeGod
Freshly caught fillets baked in tinfoil with butter & sprinkled with tony chachere's seasoning on the mini gas grill. Mmm good.WG
RebelSS
I cook a lot of chili, stews, soups, during the fall and freeze'em in 1-2 qt. containers. I'll dump one of these in a zip lock bag the night before, and she'll be ready to dump in the pot on my one burner by the next noon. Add venison sausage, some crackers and sharp cheddar, maybe a big dill pickle and I'm a happy man. Quick and easy. All you need is a spoon. (Use the fish knife for sausage and cheese)
hcmpls1
Sunflower seeds. Not quite a meal but it takes the place of one!
Fred_Bear
cold leftover fish sandwiches are good on fishing trips with extra fish from the night before. Otherwise boiled venison or goose brats and heated up baked beans. Always gotta have some goose jerky or smoked duck or smoked fish or something to snack on. JBL21
Fish is the first choice, but in the event of a slow day I bring Pre-made hamburgers(mixed with bacon and cheese)from the local grocery store, beans and sliced potatoes. Great on the Weber. Little time consuming but gives me a chance to strech and see what is going on around me.
peerchking
All of the above, and when i'm going out all day and know it's going to be nice then I'll take the grill and break out the Jonhsonville and rap them in bacon MMMMPeanuts in the shell

bigbad401
I really don't eat much on the ice. Sunflower seeds and maybe a candy bar. Usually I will eat something before I go out.
Fishnblood
Gotta love the seeds. But hotdogs are pretty easy to fit in a cooler with some ketchup and buns without needing a grill. Put them on the things you cook marshmallows with in front of the sunflower heater for a minute or 2.
Blainebob
Dogs warmed up by the heater, seeds, handful of mixed nuts.Good ol PB&J too.
bogwalker
Wrap hamburger patty, onions, potatoes and carrots in aluminum foil and set it on the grill (or whatever you use). Easy meal and it tastes great. Cooking time depends on your heat source. You can check on them once in a while. Make them up at home and put them in a cooler until you are ready. Good stuff. walleye 4 me
chilli, deer sausage, jimmy dean skillets with eggs, fried potato dumplings with lots of onions and butter, and beer.
deadeye
I like fried polish and brats. Sometimes homemade chicken noodle or chicken wild rice if im lucky. The heater/cooker comes in handy for that stuff. Most of the time though my trips are around 2-4 hours so I dont bring food but on the all day trips that stuff is great. frogtosser
I bring out the deer steaks and grill them on a small grill, other then that a few apple pies are always good.
Fredd
I don't take the time to cook on the ice, so venison jerky for me. My best memories are of my grandfather cooking venison sausage on the heater in tinfoil. Add some homemade bread and you're set. Bogwalker's hobos would be great too! dougger222
Other than fish of course my next favorite ice meal is a Jacks pep and shroom pizza. For some reason those little gas ovens cook those pizzas better than a home oven or even pizza oven. But my favorite meal on ice was with two strangers on WBL a couple years ago,Home made mashed potatoesTenderloinKing Crab Legs,Now that's eating on the ice!The next best meal was on new years a few years ago on the ice, LobsterPrawnsMay bring some king crab legs up the sleeper house on Zippel this Winter though. At $8 a pound they were cheaper than eyes!!!
minnbowhunter
I make fish dip, boil some filets and drain and chill. Use a fork and flake the fish up real good and mix in some Cocktail sauce. It's great cold on crackers. Make it up at home before you go out, great with a cold one!!
gardn184
hands down my personal favorite is venison cubes cooked up in a ton of butter, lawrys, onion, and garlic. Throw in some cheese on top of that and your set
Farley
I think Venison is pretty much the standard fare in any fish house. Cooked a frozen pizza on the stove in a pan last winter by scraping off the cheese and meat and cooking that seperate from the crust. It was one of those nights. Turned out pretty good though. Phred52
shnelson, You might want to be a little more specific. In my dropdown house, I'm capable of making anything I can make at home(oven or stove). In my porty, I pretty much thrive out of the widemouth thermos, sausage sandwiches and bagged chips. In the widemouth, I've had pot pies, soups, stews etc. @~240# I can guarantee (sadly), I don't miss many meals , But it all goes to (as Popeye would say) muskle! I can't say I agree with that 100%, some of it goes to 'good looks' Phred52
