The_Duckslayer
My son and I went to Pelican lake on Friday to check it out. Had never been there before so we figured now that the opener is over and it is a weekday lets got check it out. It looks a lot like Swan lake only deeper and less weedy... but that is not the point of this story...We were coming in and there was a man and woman loading a boat. He got the thing on WAY crooked so my son and I went over to help him lift it up and set it on straight. We did that and chatted for a bit and the guy seemed like a real nice fella. Then along comes Mr CO looking to check things out. Here is what he found with this guy...1. His shotgun was uncased AND loaded in the boat2. His shotgun had lead shot loaded in it and there was more in the boat.3. One of the shells that was loaded in his shotgun was actually a SLUG!4. His shotgun did not have a plug in it5. He did not have a federal stamp6. He did not have a state stamp.I would consider that VERY dangerous! Especially if he were across the way from me and attempted to water swat a cripple with that slug! Hard to imagine! Take care and N Joy the Hunt././JimboPS The CO wasted no paper on us! Quackaddict9
lol, that is crazy and no common sense! Glad he didn't have to water swat a duck with that slug when you were across from him.

Scott Stein
people like this are the ones who make the rest of us look bad, at least the CO caught him and gave him the necessary tickets!

Neighbor_guy
Just goes to show, some people just dump shells into a box or bag and load from there without checking what they grabed. Yikes We all keep a variety of shells. I am a firm beleaver in saving the box rather than dumping them into a "shell box". That way you know (assuming you can read) what you are shooting and when. paul pachowicz
I'm not a waterfowler and don't know the rules but, what did this guy do wrong? Did he have any dead ducks? Seriously, all he had in his boat (that was out of the water) was a shotgun with some shells in it. This is illegal in Minn? Don't laugh...I'm just asking. Dave S
Your gun cannot hold more than 3 shells while hunting ducks in MN, hence the no plug in the gun ticket.
The_Duckslayer
When you are underway on the water the gun must be unloaded and cased just the same as it must be in a car. Even if you are chasing a crippled duck on the water while the boat is under powered motion the gun is supposed to be unloaded. Loaded guns in a boat that is bouncing across the water is also dangerous!Lead shot is ilegalNo he did not have any ducks in the boat... kosterguide
yea i agree this guy was not that smart but, 1 lead is only illegal for hunting waterfowl, not haveing on water. everyone on here thinks it is illgal to have lead on you when your on water and its not. i take lead with me some time out in the boat becuase we use it to get to our other side of propurty and we hunt grouse. I even talked to a co about this and he said it is only illgal if we would use it on water, being in possesion is not illgal unless you have it readly avilble for use while you are waterfowl hunting is what he told me and showed me in a rules book

chris63
Is there a way to tell that a spent shell had lead or steel in it?c63
broken_line
look at it.. if it has lettering on it, it should say steel or be a larger # of shot... if not there is really no way.. other than low brass target loads..
paul pachowicz
maybe I'm just thick but, the guy wasn't on the water and nothing says he was shooting. I'm afraid I ask for a court date and fight it. Th CO didn't see him IN the water or shot at anything or have anything in possession so what did he need a license for? Kinda like being on a boat with no permit and NOT fishing...just sitting there. Dunno...just seems a little odd to me.

The_Duckslayer
The CO was at the landing when the guy came motoring up in the boat. The boat was covered in camo. The boat had decoys in it. The two of them were covered head to toe with camo. He was talking about the day and remarked that the saw ducks just none that they could shoot at. Actually he comented that they had gotten out there the night before in order to secure a good spot. They were hunting...My bad on the new gun-case rule. Still it has to be unloaded though.Take care and N Joy the hunt././Jimbo

kosterguide
in my case i use boats to access some pheasant ground that is privet and i carry lead all the time and i am not afriad to say that, but yes if he has a gun and other stuff he is prolly guilty but if he might have enough of a case to fight thou
harvey lee
Why would a person even place themselves in a position that now they have to hope they could fight it in court?I would bet good money he was trying to shoot ducks and got caught. The CO is not going to write up bogus tickets and go to court for nothing. The guy broke the law.

96trigger
Some of you that think this guy did nothing wrong must be lawyers. I love how some people try to say they didn't brake the rules because this or that, when it is obvious that they did. I do agree that there are other times one might have different ammo in a boat, we use boats to go hunt fox on the islands around here, and I'm sure some might portage with slugs, but that was not the case here.
