First attempted harvest of the year!!!

And it was one of the funnest I have ever had the pleasure of attempting.

Last night I went out, right after work. Got my gear loaded up and hit the road, got to my stand around 5:30. As soon as I sat down last night deer started dumping into the field. Unfortunately they were coming out on the other side, which was about 200 yards away. The first two to come out were 2 bucks, an 8 pointer and a 6 pointer. I watched them until dark and since nothing was on my side of the field I'd change my plans for tomorrow night(tonight).

I laid out the same plan from the night before only this time I'd hunt out of a stand we had on the north side of the field where the deer came out the night before. I get over to the stand and notice there are already 3 deer out in the field over where I was sitting yesterday crazy I said the heck with it, I knew the area pretty good and it was perfect to try a stalk, something that I don't get a chance at doing too often but this time the circumstances were pretty much perfect. The wind would be into my face the whole way over, and there was soft ground all the way along the edge, there was a decent ridge that would hide my approach most of the way. So it was on.

I climbed down tucked my release into my sleeve and started my stalk, the wind and snow were blowing pretty good into my face. the ground was already white with snow and the deer stuck out like sore thumbs in the field, so I imagine I did too. I worked my way to where they couldn't see me and I increased my pace. Darkness was approaching a little faster than I anticipated with the snow blowing and the cloud cover. I was reaching the top of the ridge, pretty much to the point where if I took a few more steps I should be able to see them. I pulled the release out of my sleeve and nocked an arrow, I was waiting to try out my new 2 blade Rage broad heads everyone have been bashing on here grin. I clipped my release on the loop and crested the ridge, only to see the butt end of the deer walking into the woods cry all that stalking and nothing.....

What would it hurt to follow them into the woods? The wind was blowing close to 20mph I would imagine. I made my way to the woodline and saw where they went in, heck I was 15 yards from my stand, I knew this spot and I knew they were headed to the beaver dam on the south side of the pond. I make my way into the swaying trees, and immediately I see a big grey body, but couldn't see the head. Than I see the head turn and see a flash of antler, this was too much work not to get some backstraps out of the deal. I re-clipped my release, drew back the ol Mathews, settled my 20 yard pin behind the shoulder, took a deep breath and as I was slowly letting it I touched off my release..... I saw the arrow fly and bury itself right to the fletchings behind the front shoulder.

The rest is history, the blood trail could be followed by anyone.
