Minnesota Golden Gophers!

Kinda shocked nobody is talking about them on here, or the new stadium or the fact they take on #7 Cal this weekend.

It would be an amazing win but I don't know how we're going to stop there running game! I'll still be watching it before the Twins game though!

On a side note anybody hear about Brewster not allowing any of his players or the staff to do an interview on KFAN because some of the radio personalities have ripped on the Gophers for how last season ended up...

jman,

You know what Brewster says, You are either part of Gopher Nation or you are not!

Regarding the California game, The Gophers will have their hands full. I too don't think they will be able to shut down the Bears running game but,"thats why they play the game!"

On a side note anybody hear about Brewster not allowing any of his players or the staff to do an interview on KFAN because some of the radio personalities have ripped on the Gophers for how last season ended up...

From Michael Rand's Star Trib blog:

"It's been an interesting day on KFAN, where 9-noon host Paul Allen spent a good portion of his program talking about the relationship between the station and Gophers football -- or apparently the lack thereof.

Said Allen early in the program:

"We got the word this morning that the head coach will not allow players or coaches to come on this radio station because he does not like the way this radio station has treated players or him or coaches or whatever it is ... and I think that's a real shame."

Our take: while it's Brewster's call as to what access is granted to his program and a part of us respects that he has drawn a line in the sand, he's missing the boat on this one. We have to imagine much of this has to do with critiques levied by drive-time savageur (our spelling .... kinda like it) and former Strib colleague Dan Barreiro. If that's the case, and similar teams followed suit, KFAN would be out of local guests in a hurry.

Brewster might not like criticism, but it comes with the territory of running a big-time program. His thin skin will probably cost the Gophers pretty good (and mainly positive) exposure on the state's pre-eminent talk radio station/network. And if you think KFAN was hard on the Gophers before? Well, we're guessing the vitriol will go up a notch now.

UPDATE: We're told the parties have mended fences or some such thing already? That's what we're told Barreiro is saying on his show this afternoon. Was it a misunderstanding? The shortest rift ever? Stay tuned ..."

Brewster has to know that the criticism comes with the job, both from the fans and the media. He set up all the expectations so he better be held accountable for them.

As far as Cal, I think most people are penciling it in as a loss. I just hope they can stay in the game.

The tackling and pass coverage has been terrible for the Gophers so far. They could actually play Cal close, but they are blowing it.

Good to see Decker back in the game after the shot he took. The offense does not seem to be clicking yet this season. If they can straighten out some sloppy play, they could stay in the game.

If not for the horrific Cal special teams play, the difference in the score would have been much more than 14. MN was lucky to keep it close going into the fourth quarter.

I'm sure the guys in Vegas who took Cal are happy though as they held the spread (13.5pts).

Gophers will lose to Cal by 30. Welcome to real football.

Or not huh Ron?

Gophs were definitely outmanned, but put forth a very galant effort until Cal went up 28-21. We stunk it up after that, hit the panic button I think... Hope Decker is OK we are in trouble without him! We need a running game big time.

Brutal that I pushed on this game. Shoulda covered easy with the game tied late in the 4th.

The sack on 3rd and 15 was a killer with Cal getting a re-due with a penalty on themselves and then converting on 3rd 15 was the difference in the game.

We probably win the game that play aside!

The New stadium rocks behind belief and so much for the haters and their supposed lock BLOW_OUT with a so called REAL football team COMING IN. Gophers played well against a decent top ten team.

Gophers played well against a decent top ten team.

Didn't one player have something like, oh, FIVE TD's?

Was it also true that the new stadium couldn't even sell-out its second game, and one that featured a top 10 team at that? You would think that alone would have sold some tickets, but apparently the fair-weather fans stayed home knowing their club didn't stand a chance.

Ah there's the negativity, and from a pro-staffer too. No, they didn't win the game. However, a non-rated gopher team was tied 21-21 going into the 4th quarter against one of the top-rated teams in the country, which includes arguably the best RB in the country. If that's not playing well and competing, then I don't know what is. By the way, the game did sell out. Lmitout, if you insist on being negative about Gopher football, at least get your facts straight first.

Hey, I'm just repeating what I heard on the news that there were a fair number of vacant seats.

Let's be honest, they were tied 21-21 largely because of Cal mistakes and not because of the competitiveness of the Gophers. Yes, they were tied with a top rated team in the country as far as the scoreboard is concerned, but lets not foolishly believe that MN should be rated along side of them in the next poll. The score doesn't tell the whole story and not representative of how the game played out. If we're going to use that logic, then I suppose that the Lions should be considered a contender for the NFC North championship because they were leading the Vikings at halftime. smirk

What story does the score not tell? The 5td's by one player? Some have brought his name into Heisman consideration. The fact that we were in the game(regardless if you think it was because of Cal's mistakes or what have you)is enough to give the Gophers credit. Most everyone picked them to get blown out of the water. Yet they didn't. Give credit where credit is due. The Gophers can play ball, but like any team in the country, they still have some work ahead of them. Heck even USC and BYU lost to teams they SHOULD of beaten.
