grouse gun

Recommended Posts

My favorite grouse gun was a single-shot 12ga. my dad had. It had a short barrel and talk about light weight and quick to the shoulder. The only drawback was the single shot but that's about all you usually get anyway with grouse. I don't have that gun anymore.

I've shot a fair number of guns over the years (nothing compared to some people), and I settled on a Benelli Montefeltro 20 gauge with a 26" barrel last summer. My dad actually bought it a couple years ago for grouse and the minute I picked it up, I fell in love with it. He decided he would rather have a 12 gauge so I jumped at the chance to buy it and he picked up a 12 gauge Benelli Ultralight (also a great grouse gun). As for why I like it? Its super light, dependable, and most importantly it just feels good when I'm shooting it, and I can hit with it.

For loads, I usually use Federal High Velocity #7 1/2 early in the year, and 3" mag #6 later. Maybe a bit of an overkill, but I have yet to destroy a bird with them and seem to have better luck shooting them. I shoot skeet and improved cylinder 99% of the time.

Doubles are great guns and a joy to shoot, but I personally feel handicapped with only 2 shots. Its probably more of a mental thing that I just can't get over. My first shotgun was a pump, and since I went to a semi-auto, I'll never go back.

Gun shopping is always fun! Good luck!

Remington 1100 with a 26” barrel choked improve cylinder. The gun has a nice open pattern and with Remington Premier field loads copper plated shot 2 ¾”, 3 ¼ dr-eq, 1 ¼ oz, 7 ½ shot it is easy on my shoulder, shoots through early leafy cover and brings down grouse like they were struck by lighting at any range out to my maximum.

When I want something lighter to carry and to pick up my gun mounting and swing speed I switch to a 20-gauge Browning citori with an English stock, 26” modified and full barrels. You have to dot your I’s and cross your T’s with this gun (be right on the bird) it is either get them or miss with this gun, no give me like the imp cyl on the 1100.

My favorite is a Franchi AL 20 guage that was given to me by grandpa. Its about the lightest 20 guage auto ever made. I have shot several guns grouse hunting and its still mt favorite. Although my old trusty 870 still outperforms just about anything else.

6.25# 20 gauge o/u choked c/ic

6.5# 12 gauge sidelock ejector sxs choked c/lm

1 1/8 oz of 7.5 shot is all I use.

Prefer the 20 gauge. It's light, lively, well balanced and I shoot well with it. It's good for 1 armed carrying through the [PoorWordUsage] too.

I'm partial to my 12 gauge o/u Citori with 24" barrel and straight stock. I shoot 7 1/2 high velocity all season long with skeet/IC chokes early, and IC/Mod late. Very light weight, well balanced and easy to shoulder.

I will have to get back to you on this. I traded in my favorite grouse gun last year on what I hope will be a new favorite - a Beretta Silver Pigeon V in 20 ga. It's a very fun gun and handles great!!! I will most likely be using Skt/IC to start the year with some RST #8 or Spred-R loads. It is working pretty well on the doves so far this year so I hope all the shooting practice I got over the past weekend pays off this coming weekend.

Anybody here use the Benelli ultralight 20ga? I was looking at this as my new grouse gun possibly. With it being so light how is the recoil with the 3" shells? Thanks.

My usual grouse gun is an old Iver-Johnson single shot 20ga. nice and light, quick shooting.

Second the AL 20.

I use a Franchi AL 20 most of the time. A very efficient, effective and by far the lightest grouse hunting gun I've every seen. Late in the year bring out the Browning 20 side by side.

Remington 870 special field with skeet choke. Very short and quick with the english stock. I am not sure why you would use a 3' shell for grouse hunting...I use the cheapest stuff available and it drops them like a ton of bricks

i agree with the remington 870...cheap and mine has put down its fair share of birds. my dad shoots a o/u, sometimes we run into situations where it is nice to have more than 2 shots at your disposal. smile casey

Browning BPS with 24" barrel, english stock. Best gun for any upland bird hunting by far in my opinion. It has bottom-eject so a left or right hand person can use it and shells don't hit your partner while your walking the trail...
