I live south of madison wisconsin and i was out yesterday, ice was soft around the edges but still good enough for a couple days even with 50 degree weather, This is how i tell. If the auger hand cuts through with no ice chips ( the kind you cold put in a drink) you have a few days left that is where we are at. You sould in central minnesota have ice for at least 1 1/2 weeks anyway,North of metro you never know you could fish till easter but you never know, you just have to be safe and pick the deeper lakes. Also this is the time when anyone can catch fish. Look for community spots from first ice they will be there again.

I think I am done driving out with the pickup for this year..unexpected things can happen when water on top of the ice is running in through holes and cracks. Time to stick to just the atv. Although I am not ready for the ice to be gone this warm weather sure makes me want to be shallow water crappie fishing in the boat!
