Recommended Posts

Okay, we continue to hear from you about the worst movies ever. Now let's hear about your fav's. Break them down into categories, e.g. Drama, Sci-Fi/Fantasy and Comedy.

I have to say the God Father I and II are by far my favorite Dramatic.

Next, the new Lord of the Rings Trilogy--can't wait for the Hobbit coming out next year, I think.

Comedy--Animal House and Blazing Saddles are a tie.

Drama - The GodFather 1-2 - excellent - hi re-watchability factor.

Comedy - Animal House and Blazing Saddles hold up well. Revenge of the Nerds is comedic Genius as well.

Sci-Fi - Nothing Beats the Star Wars Saga

I think best War movie might also be a sub-category - that would have to be Platoon.

These are just my favorites in those categories. I'm sure the trash talk would get hot and heavy if we were to open this thread up to debate (Eff you ya jag!! Blazing Saddles kicks Animal House's behind!)

Drama: Blackboard Jungle (Glenn Ford, Sidney Poitier, Vic Morrow, and who could

forget Jamie Farr as "The one-who-thinks-I-am-silly")

WWI: Sgt. York

WWII: 12 O'clock High

Vietnam: Apocalypse Now

Western: Big Jake (I thought you were dead?)

U.S. Comedy: Animal House, Blazing Saddles (just about any Mel Brooks movie

works in this category)

U.K. Comedy: Monty Python and the Holy Grail (my all time favorite movie)

Sci-Fi: Star Wars (the 1977 one)

Horror: Dawn of the Dead

Sports Drama: Bang the Drum Slowly

Sports Comedy: Slapshot (Case closed)

Fishing: The Old Man and the Sea (Spencer Tracey)

Car Chase: Bullet or French Connection

Math: Good Will Hunting

I used Shawshank Redemption, Cool Hand Luke, and The original Kung foo as teaching tools in an adolescent chemical health treatment program. Each has some empowering themes and life lessons(not to mention great lines).

Slapshot never gets old.

I also am captivated by the PBS Alone in the Wilderness from 50 years ago. Watching that guy build a cabin from scratch stirs a primal longing deep in my DNA. Planet of the Apes does that too.

Warriors with Sean Penn is another great adventure of a completely different sort.

As I read others lists my memory is jolted and feel a strong urge to edit my first list.Fun thread. Hans

I have changed my list twice now. I see others have as well. That is awesome. I had to add Uncommon Valor to the list. Maybe we should have a "Men's admitted tear-jerker category". I will go first and say 1. Saving Private Ryan 2. The Sixth Sense and 3. Uncommon Valor. There, I did it. I just admitted those made me a little teary crygrin

Great lists guys, 'The Dude Abides, man' thats awesome.

I cant make a best ever list. But..

Comedy: Stuck on You, Princess Bride( let me explain..take too long, let me sum up), Overboard, when Kurt Russell says, 'Come to Daddy', that just kills me, The Christmas Story, Operation Petticoat, What about Bob

Drama: Lawrence of Arabia, Mr Smith goes to Washington, Hawaii, Godfathers

Religious theme: Ten Commndments, Ben-Hur, Its a Wonderful Life

Musical: Paint your Wagon, West Side Story, Mary Poppins

Sci-Fi future: Star Wars, Blade Runner, Terminator

Sci-Fi past: Lord of the Rings, Conan movies

Sci-fi today, Independence Day, Armageddon

Western: Fastet Gun Alive, High Noon, True Grit, Will Penny

War Movie: Private York, Stalag 17, Dirty Dozen, Gunga Din, Zulu, Saving Private Ryan

Mystery: Anything Hitchcock made, nobody else even close

Horror/monster: IT, Jaws, Predator series, especially 2 because it shows the true ethos of the trophy taker, respect for your quarry.

The real problem is that there are 000s of movies out there we dont get see until they come up on TCM or AMC once a year. Old movies were more watchable and the actrsses were way more beautiful. My favorite recent movies, Lord of the Rings, had main female characters whose looks would have put them as cleaning ladies in Hitchcock films.

There are some actors that are worth watching in anything, Cary Grant, Charlton Heston, Peter Otoole, Richard Burton. Cary Grant never made a bad film. Even Tom Hanks as great as he is cant say that.
