I have a boat so I'm not stuck on shore, but last year my 5 year old kid decided for a while that he wanted to fish off docks and piers so we did quite a bit of that. He'd see people fishing in the channels on Tonka or on the docks and piers by the boat landings, and decided we should be doing that too. We mostly caught small sunfish and bass, but it was fun ---- lots of running and goofing around, throwing rocks and sticks, just having a good ole' time, etc. Reminded me of when I was a kid.

I wise person I work with pointed this out to me: when you're in a boat you cast as close to shore as possible, but when you're on shore you cast out as far as possible. Ironic?? I think so.

thats really funny!!! never thought about that before!!

Sometimes you can get to spots only by shore fishing. Sometimes those spots are better than any you could find on a boat. They aren't that common, but they are out there and when you find one, they are a blast!

also have a boat but still fish a lot from shore, actually prefer it. caught a 31 inch walleye and a 16 inch crappie from shore last year. like onafly just mentioned during spring and fall some shore spots can be even more productive. during the dog days you have to fish for what some consider less dersirable species, but to me a fish is a fish and a carp or catfish puts up a heck of a lot better fight than the almighty walleye. also drunk shore fishing isnt against the law.

I hear that.

I inherited an old 12 footer with a 4 horse Evinrude, take it out on small lakes near my familys cabin. Fish from shore near home and do nice on Sunnies and smaller Bass, catch a few nice ones, a 12 inch crappie being one of which (for a woodbury lake its nice...)

you cant beat getting a couple of buddies together, a couple of beers and a good spot to cast. ALWAYS a good time.

I used to be a shore fisherman. Still take the family shore fishing as my wife doesn't like to be in a boat. It's fun, but I don't do as well as I do out in the boat.

If you want to fish out of boats, check in the metro section for open seats. Lots of folks will get you out as well.

I will probably do mainly shore fishing, but when I get up to my dad's I get to use his boat. I also have a friend with a boat that just moved down here, hoping to con him into letting me get out with him smile.

But shore fishing can be a great time. I went last spring and there was a lake south of the metro that was hitting with sunnies and little bitty wallies. But, having special talents, snagged a MASSIVE snapping turtle. It was about as happy as I was to have caught it crazy . Hoping for the same fun this spring, minus the snapper frown.

If anyone has an open spot, even a canoe, let me know. I'll pay for gas, bait, all that good stuff. Otherwise, where are some good spots to hit up for shore fishing? I know most of the eagan/burnsville spots, what else in the south metro here?

I purchased a canoe a couple years ago and usually take to a nearby river. It allows me to get to certain parts of that river that are normally protected by private property. I usually throw out a line and catch catfish or something like that. It's nice getting out on a quiet lake or river and row out to some areas that are normally not reachable.

It's been a couple years since I have had my boat out on the water so maybe this year I will just have to make up my mind and get out there...

I think someone already said something about this, but a pair of good waders is a great investment for a shore fisherman. My brother and I used to catch a ton of eyes walking out on shallow points and sandbars in waders (especially early). Just tie your bait bucket and a stringer to you, throw a pliers in your pocket, and you're good to go. We don't do this as often anymore, but I dont know why.
