best knot?

I almost always use the palomer knot. With ice fishing jigs - pimps, jiggin raps etc I tie on a small #1 cross lock it makes changing lures a snap without retying. I have found no ill effects from the cross lock. I wouldn't suggest using cross locks with small crappie type jigs, than tie a palomer direct.

Palomar is the strongest, but isn't the easiest to tie with bigger lures. There is another one that is really good, I think it was the Trilene knot or something like that, where its looped twice through the eyelet, wrapped back around the line six times or so, then fed back through the two loops you started with. I usually use that one for cranks, spinners, and any larger baits.

For open water and ice, I run a modified Palomer. Since it is a pain to pass big lures through, if you simply put the loose end of the line back through the hoop, it tightens on itself. I have never had a knot fail. Just make sure to lube up the line good and pull tight.

i use the clinch knot for everything buy braid...i konw its not the strongest but 99% of the time my line will break before my knot does.

the only difference is that i do not pass the line back through the big loop....just back through the loop right next to the eye of the lure, wet it, pull 'er tight and give it heck

I like the palomar knot when using braids, because it won't slip.

But with mono I always use the uni-knot, I can tie it faster and literally do it with my eyes closed smile It is also a great knot for tying line to a spool, and joining two lines of similar diameter (double uni-knot).

The last year or so I started using the palomar knot along with many other knots for all my open water fishing, think im gunna have to stick with just the palomar.

I just read somewhere im not sure where but I should be using a loop knot when ice fishing jigging raps and similar lures in order to give them more action. I havent had a chance to get out and test this but i thought id ask here first. I have never had good luck with the loop knot so i was didnt know if i needed to get good at it for better luck on the ice....

A loop knot will not (pardon the pun) give you direct contact or control of the jig (if you are talking the knot that isn't tight to the eye of the jig). This may/may not give you the desired results that you are looking for with your lure. I tie Trilene and poly.

Used to do the same thing when I tied the clinch knot, until last year when a friend hook a huge looper along the shore. lost the fish just behind the boat, knot came undone. he was using one one my rods, he still gives me flax over it. now I run the line thru the eye loop.

I saw a fishing show last year that tested a dozen different knots with a pressure testor to check breaking point. They tested mono/braid/flourocarbon, and the palomar was the strongest with all.

Its the only not ill ever use, it to me has never failed, and most the time im fishing for the big ones...

I use a improved cinch knot 75% of the time (more like 100% on ice) and a loop knot the rest of the time. I really think the loop works great with open water rapalas and stuff like that. Otherwise I use the improved cinch and have never had a problem.

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
