Coffee making at camp

We run an aluminum percolator that my mother-in-law had at her lake place for years. The store grind is too fine to work very good but we'll grind our own for some trips.

I walked through a garage sale last spring and picked up a Pyrex percolator that was pertty much like we had when I was kid long before Mr. Coffee.

When we did a lot of pack-in camping to Canada, we'd boil off a scoop of grounds and settle them down with a bit of cold water. It was still pretty gritty but helped keep a guy clean.

You're camping, right? And you've got your Nalgene bottle with you, right? I mean, you've gotta have your Nalgene with you while outdoors. That said, do a Google search for "press-bot". It works really well, and it's one less thing to tote around. No percolators, no bulky press. The Press-bot folds down, and works great for coffee or tea.

I bought one of the Coleman coffee makers that looks like a Mr. Coffee. Thing is awesome. I wouldn't pack it in to a remote site or anything, but when camping with the family or a group it is the best..

For smaller outings I second the coffee press.

I have a vintage perc pot, it's probably 50 years old... that thing makes the best coffee on the planet. Used it all winter on the Mr. Cooker heater, and I plan to make accommodation's to mount the Mr. Cooker in the boat for those overnights on the river (gets cold in a hurry when the fog rolls in, the coffee would be just the thing at that point.)

H2O - it is amazing how even Folgers can taste good over a camp fire grin.gif I do like the percolator the best, but like the convence of the "press". I'll make Perc coffee at the cabin over the fire even though we have a coffee maker in the cabin \:o

Another vote for the "perculated" coffee....Mmmm, nothing tastes quite as good as that. Some people thing I am nuts, (and maybe it is a mental thing) but I am convinced that perculated coffee tastes a LOT different than the classic drip. I use to even bust my ol' perculator out at home over the stove for coffee.....until my wife finally picked me up a home perculator.

The press bots are also a great choice if you are really going compact, but if you are bringing a box of stuff to camp, toss in a perc pot and just set it right on the outside of the coals and enjoy.

My father has his original perc pot that someday I hope to become the rightful owner of....(hopefully not anytime soon)

I got educated on the egg coffee back in my youth when doing the sunday coffee and rolls at the local catholic church. We'd just mix in the eggs with the grounds and let the perculator do it's magic....Almost makes me want to go make a pot right now!

Stainless Perculator for sure. The press makes too rich a cup of coffee for me. Plus I like to listen to the perculator do its thing. Plus I find I can get the coffeee just the way I like it that day.

Presses belong in book shops and coffeee houses not on camping trips.

However the percolator is my 2nd choice. \:\)

Wow, thank goodness. I bought a pop-up yesterday and went shopping tonight for "stuff" for the camper and was at Wally World and was debating about a percolator. I then went over to the coffee pot aisle and couldn't pass up the Sunbeam 12 cup electric coffee maker for $10. We are just going to keep packing it in the box so the carafe doesn't get broke. We got outlets- I am gonna use 'em!! grin.gif

Here's some thing the wife and I use. There are these coffee bags just like tea bags, they are real coffee, can't tell the differenc from perc'ed coffee. Boil your water and drop them in fast, easy & tastes ok, if you like coffee.

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
