Favorite fish to target through the ice?

I like to eat fish so I'm not picky. I have yet to catch a pike through the ice so I think that would be fun and it's been a few years since I got in some eyes. Hopefully my trip to Red will help me out on that. Pannies, love to catch, but would love to really go after eyes and pike.

yeah, long lake and bass lake are the two closest lakes within an hour of DL. Then there is Blue lake in Hubbard co, NE of Park Rapids.

It all depends on the time of hte year. During early ice and late ice, you can't beat walleye fishing. The time it takes is just awesome. Around this time of hte year, I like to switch and target crappies.

The summer months are the same, but LM Bass would be #2.

ITs is SO true! Once you tie into a laker you will wonder how you've never heard of it. It is so exhilarating and you're fighting such a mighty fish on a 3ft pole. Also the possibility to catch a 10+lb'r is all the more rush you need.

Rainbow trout, like Minnow_03 the lake they are in is close. I did get a 23 inch over 5 pound German Brown Dec 31. Presidents day weekend we get to go yellow perch fishing for 2 days, we only get to do that once a year.See fish here

I've been thinking and even though it's not intenitional, catching a BIG northern on light tackle has to be some of the funnest fishing I've ever come across. Never caught a smallie through the ice tho...

Hey Powerstroke, I've been trying to find them (Crappies) out on Tonka too, but have had no luck. I have been able to find some decent Walleyes out there. If you're ever interested in joining me, let me know. I kind of gave up on the lakes around EP, since I wasn't having much luck and they seem to be fished pretty hard.

Walleyes ( big ones ) sure are fun, but crappies hold a special place in my heart. Pulling a fighting, 11" crappie through the hole ranks right up there!!

Headed to the BBash this weekend for some Lakers and from what I've been told, my list may completely change by next week

thanks for all the responses so far, i just thought it would be cool to see what everyone liked targeting the most. Especially because i will soon be able to have many more opportunities to target different species because i will be getting my licence in less than a month.

I've just got to say it, enjoy this part of your life Burnham, it's one I would relive.

I like yellow perch, they taste great in winter. There are many species I have not yet pulled through a hole so every fish is exciting to me.

thanks for remindin me john, i try to always remember that im only in high school once. anyways, a guy that i deer hunt with called me and now it looks like im going to go to mille lacs on friday-saturday! ive heard mille lacs isnt producing much this year but if i catch my first 'eye through the ice i will be happy
