Hypothetical question (and an entertaining story)

Ryan M and I got out to Medicine today. We caught a mixed bag of dinky fish to start. The walk, dragging an Otter cabin through the snow was BRUTAL. Ryan was "kind of" rewarded for the walk with the biggest walleye I've seen on this lake. Probably was 24-26". I say probably because he got it up through the hole and it came off the hook. He immediately grabbed it and swept it onto the ice. Two quick flops later and it went head down through one of my holes. Amidst the frantic situation, I believe he kicked my scoop down a hole. His other line somehow got caught on something at that time and he pulled until the line broke on that pole. I can only think he got hooked on my scoop and the scoop got snagged on the bottom. I've never heard of anyone snagging a line ice fishing where there are no signs of weeds. We were entertained, amused, and distraught all at the same time.

So, my question is this. The fish was through the hole, grabbed and on the ice (albeit for a very short time). Does it "count" as a catch? Obviously, there was no official competition or tournament. Just wondering what everyone else considers a "catch." grin.gif

Nope, sorry. You clearly have to have complete control of the fish and make a fishing move with it. Whether that fishing move is a long arm pose for a photo, or a big fat smooch, it needs to be a fishing move.

Nice try though.

Ironically (because I gamble on EVERYTHING), there was no bet tonight. Of course, if there was, I got first fish, and I don't know if I would have given him credit for the catch if there was a biggest fish bet. As stated by Dtro and others, he didn't make a fishing move, only a defensive swat at it.

After further review, the fish did NOT have both fins on the ice, only one. It might have counted in the college game, but not in the pros.

The responses are exactly what I was looking for. Thanks for injecting some humor into the situation everyone

The fish might be cited with unsportsman like conduct for tossing the ice scoop down the hole. However this was after the fact that your buddy didn't make a fishing move. There fore the play stands and there is no need for replay.

After further and further review, it appears that "ameyers41" actually touched the fish while motioning towards it. This action would then result in an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty towards "ameyers 41" and give "Ryan M" the official catch. First and 10. grin.gif

Did either of you have a younger family member on your fishing staff that may have reached on to the playing surface and touched the fish with his thumb while it was a live fish? If so, and the reveiw shows that he did indeed touch it, that is an unsportmanlike act, penality will be assessed 1/2 the distance to the hole and will have to replay the down.

This thread is cracking me up more each time I read through it. Nice!

Yeah, not what I expected when I opened it, but very good thread! smile.gif I'm kinda wondering if the fish might be juiced...?... That would account for his fast escape.

    • Sorry to hear that Duff. Will give my GSP's an extra scratch behind the ear for you guys today
    • Aw, man, sorry to hear that.  Shed some tears and remember her well.  They all take a piece of our hearts with them; some more than others.
    • yes sorry for your loss..  our dogs are always special...
    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
