Ooooo, that smell!

Just found my auger gas can tipped over in my Otter. Almost a gallon pooled up on one end and some got on canvas as well. I've got two days before I'll be fishing in it. Any thoughts on how I can get rid of the smell and fumes in such a short time?

Set that stinky bad-boy up in the yard, run a hose from the hot water line in your house, blast and scrub away with hot water and Dawn/degreaser. It might take a bit for it to dry. If it were me I'd set my Mr. Heater a short distance to aid the drying.

That and perhaps a bunch of Lil' Pine Tree air-fresheners.

Good LucK!

you need something to neutrilize the smell not cover it up so the baking soda idea is a great one or you could also dump coffee beans in the bottom and let sit to absorb the smell also.......call a company that deals with odors such as restoration or water/mold company and ask for tips to get rid of a smell and they will give you some helpful tips!!

Take me fishing with you... I smoke swisher sweets, that would cover that smell in no time... oh no wait... then you would have a worse smelling house..

If you can mop up the worst and air it out, gas evaporates out pretty quick from my experience.

I don't think two days is long enough but after cleaning with cleaners crumple up newspaper inside, as much as you can pack in there. I do this to unused frig in RV and when I open up it has absorbed all the smell , even in the hot summer. I also do this in my boat for fish smell

I had the same thing happen to my Trap Guide one year. It was not pretty. I ended up cleaning it with some dish soap and had to pull the canvas off and first cleaned it in the yard, then threw it in the wash machine. It was a lot of work and fortunately my incident happened at the end of the season. After the wash, I put it back together and set it up in the back yard and let it air out for a week. It took care of the smell, but I still have a stain on the canvas from the auger gas.

In your situation, I would do as others have suggested and wash it out with dish soap and then sprinkle out some baking soda and vaccuum it out. You should be able to sit in it after that, but it will take some time to really get the smell out. If you have a time with a break in the ice action, remove the tarp and wash it with some good degreaser soap in the wash machine. Hope the best for you.

Gillagain, I don't have a cure for the odor, I only hope you haven't compromised the integrity of your canvas. If you smell gas, you'll likely have taken out the water repelling ability of your tarp. You might want to contact the mfgr of your house, explain the situation, and see what they'd suggest. In regular/old time canvas, gas would wash out the waterproofing. Trust me, been there, done that! Just contact Otter, They should be able to help you. Phred52

There is a product called Atmosclear and it gets rid of smells really well.

It can be purchased at any ACE hardware store.

It comes in a spray bottle and nuetralizes odor - it has no smell of it's own.

This is expensive but very effective, get a large can of coffee in dump it on the soiled area(s)If you have the option of warming the fishouse to 70 degree temps it will be more effective.Let the coffee sit for 24 hours and your shack will smell as sweet as a Starbucks!!!!c63Ps,I like Workin for mca too!

Thanks for all of your suggestions. The baking soda seems to be doing its job. I will let it sit for the rest of the day and then hose it down with pressure washer w/ car washing soap. I will definitely have a stain on my canvas though. Will not leave gas in the otter anymore.

I would recommend applying a strong mixture of a degreaser such as Simple Green and water. Scrub the mixture in and let it sit for an hour. Follow up with clean water and a towel to remove the degreaser. After you have degreased the area, set up the portable and but a fan or blower in inside to ventilate. This should make it tolerable for you to be in it until you can let the Summer sun bake out the petroleum.

1.

Try incense. Get a bunch of sticks and light 'em up. This works when I spill a little gas in the car.

2.

Get some buddies together and smoke some great cigars. Might not take the smell away, but it's a good time!

3.

Try everything mentioned on your thread!!! That should take care of it!!! grin.gif

    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
