I'm gonna go against the grain and say a shelter should come first. then definetly a flasher!! gets cold in a hurry sitting out in the dead of winter!! if you are miserably cold with a flasher, you'll go home. if you're comfortable in a shelter, you'll stay out and stick with ice fishing and get into a flasher.

Come on, first things first. The first thing you buy is a fishing rod and reel, then a shelter, auger, heater. A flasher is a nice addition but it isn't a neccesity, you can catch fish without it. But if it's -10, you won't be around long enough to catch fish.

I fished for years without a flasher and always had a great time. Always caught fish too. However, now that I have a flasher, I could never go back. If you are happy just being out on the ice then a shack is probably better for you. However, if you really want to improve your chances at catching fish, go with the flasher.

Good luck!

I say shelter first. It's nice to get out of the cold and wind. I can't imagine fishing in the dark, at 5*F, in the open. I'd be too miserable to use the Flasher.

Until you can have both, you'll catch a few less fish but your overall experience will be better.

Flashers can be used during open water. Shacks just take up space during the spring, summer, and fall months.

Like Northlander, I catch more fish when I'm comfortable in the warmth of a shack.

I use my shack about 50-70% of the time I ice fish. I use my flasher nearly 100% of the time.

Tough call.

Fishinaddict, how often do you get up around the twin cities, (I see your in 8th grade so can't drive) and do you ice fish alone or with friends, reason being, I have a two man tent style shelter that is really only good for one. If you had a way to get it you could have it.

I have been out in -25 degrees fishing for half a day or so and there is no way in hell I could have done that without a shelter. It is hard to put enough clothes on to stay reasonably warm when it is colder than -10 degrees.

I say at least a cheap portable first, then the flasher. And don't forget an auger somewhere in that list. I did a hand auger for a couple years, but later in the season when the ice in the 2 1/2 foot to 3 1/2 foot range it really makes you think hard before moving when the fish ain't biting.

flasher... if its that cold outside I'll be at home watching fishing shows on the warm couch!

I prefer putting on layers and going out at prime time for a couple hours, catching what wants to bite, then I go home. When I drag the house out I find I stay longer, end up catching the same, and end up dragging the house back off the lake when its really cold(cant drive on lakes around here).

Are we acctaully haveing this discussion?

Shelter hands down. We caught a whole bunch of fish before either of us had flashers, but only because we would be out there all day in the house. If your not there you wont catch fish, hands down.

Although I do not always take my house with when it is nice out if you want to be able to fish more days when its cold and windy then geta shelter.

Or ask for one for christmas and buy the other grin.gif

A shelter or a flasher?

I read an offer on here for a free shelter. Really a nice deal. Get the shelter first and a heater since you want to be warm. If you fish around other people that have flaxhers for a while you will still catch fish. Put a flasher on your want list for Christmas and you may get one. There are always flashers that can be bought cheap and you don't need to start with the best. Most of us started with one thing at a time. Good luck with your fishing which ever way you decide eto go. wink.gif

I think the shelter is more important. It is hard to fish in a lot of wind and cold. You can catch fish with out a flasher by using maps and drilling more holes. Besides, how are you going to haul your stuff around with no shelter.

    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
