Bullheads, love 'em & hate 'em

I was just thinking of this the other day while fishing down to the dam. I was fishing for walleyes and the bullheads were so thick you could snag them, I managed to get stung once mad.gif, but I also caught my fair share of eyes. An 8yr old kid was fishing on the oposite side of the dam and all he caught was bullheads. Every time he caught one he would look over at me with the biggest smile and showed me his bullhead. Love 'em and Hate 'em. grin.gifgrin.gifgrin.gif

Hmmmm...

I helped fill the cooler on Friday night and then tried to kill them all on Saturday night. Had a little water temp/aeration problem. You guys must have been out bass fishing last weekend, eh? tongue.gif

PS... works better to skin them before cutting off the head ;-)

Stuff I find in walleyes stomaches. Perch are most frequently found, followed by panfish, followed by bullheads, followed by insects, followed by ciscos, followed by suckers/carp/etc. Different waters will have that order pushed around a bit.

I've even found bullheads in the stomachs of eyes in such waters as Mille Lacs, Leech, and Cass Lake Chain.

Ok, I've already said too much. tongue.gif

Hey Hanson, aren't catfish the same as an over grown bullhead?

No no no... Bullheads are much finer table fare than catfish. If you wait and catch them after warm up they do taste a lot like catfish though :-( If ya see a guy pull into Waterville on a maroon and gold Vulcan 800 classic, that will be me! Have a good one and N Joy the Hunt././Jimbo

walleyeaddict, where are you from?? My folks grew up down in SW MN. Adrian, Slayton, Worthington, Luverne, that area. Whenever we go down to visit my grandparents, we always load up on bullheads. They're my favorite fish to eat, after being force fed them as a kid!

Love em! Just cause they bring fond memories to mind. I remember heading out on the bicycle with pole and tackle box tied on. If we caught a nice batch of Bullheads, it was a very good day. Them where the days. cool.gif

I can now say that I have seen it all.... a picture of a bullhead posted on fishingmn grin.gif? Just kidding, nice fish. I have eaten bullheads once. It was a formal initiation to my wife's family, but I will admit they were not as bad as I had thought they would be. Don't get me wrong, I won't be pulling out the pliers to skin them anytime soon, but they were not too bad!
