Minnesota Tag stink!

Labby

Has anyone tried to tag a deer witht eh new Minnesota tags? They have no sticker backing. I am not sure how to legally tag a deer now? Are we suppose to carry tape now? Any ideas?

lawdog are you always that much of a smartaxx to fellow FM'ers... I think that the new tags suk too. The state gets cheaper and cheaper. How's a guy supposed to site tag properly and hope the dumb thing stays on. Not that I would do it but I'm sure the crooked type will see how easy it is to reuse tags on multiple deer.

i have thought about this.

honestly, there are many solutions to tying the tag to the deer. dont have/forgot zip-ties or string? why not just use a leaf stem, piece of tall grass( roll up in your hand) a weed stem, or even a section of corn stalk.

as long as its not dryed out and brittle, it should sub in for what you dont have.

I've never had a problem with the old ones. The new one is okay but prefer the old one. Here is how I would tag it with the new one, First you tie a string to the deer to where you want to tag it, remember to save enough string to tie the tag. Then take your tag and fold it in half and used a knife to polk a hole through it not too big, just enough for your string to go through. Then tie the other end of the string to your tag, now Your deer is tag. That's how I would tag the new deer tag. Hope this helps.

I really don't think they are bad at all. They have a dye cut hole and you put a zip tie through it around the horn or leg and zip it on. I have used 2 so far and they work good.

maybe I'm dating myself but if you guys remember the old metal tags, those were the best. I know its probably cost prohibitive but they were indestructable and non transferable...

why can't they create something like that out of plastic?

Amen, the old metal ones were the best.

Certainly one could be made from plastic just like the tie wraps today. They would just need to be made a little wider or have something attached.

I think they're fine, like someone else said, I've used two so far & had no problems. Like someone else said, I always used string with the old ones, so no biggie. The only thing I wondered about, is like someone said it would be super easy to reuse a tag, but then again it would still be a lot of work, in the end if you got caught with two deer & one tag that's still one too many. With all the tags available I don't know why anyone would risk it.

I think you guys are kidding yourself if you think they're ever going to go back to some kind of premade tag that all the extras are junk after season. Economically the paper tag makes a lot of sense. You actually use it for a day or two, if you can't make it last that long what are you doing dragging your deer down a gravel road at 40 mph?

The best solution to keep them from coming off is to tie on with a string. Then take black electrical tape and wrap it around antler or leg with the sticky side out. wrap several time around to keep it tight.

If you get checked, then unrwrap the tape.

You may disagree with lawdogs sentiment, but he does bring up a good point.

The DNR prints new Regs every year for a reason.

I say bring back the old metal tags.

I like the idea of tying the tag on, rather than the stickers.

Look gorilla, I really wasn't being a smartbutt to begin with, but the rule book has a full explanation of the tags and they are precut with holes for putting the string or whatever through them so its not a huge crisis. It shouldn't be too hard to just look it up rather than thinking its a big deal. Plus, I pointed him to the whole thread that explains the tags and everybodies' thoughts on how to do it, that should have been helpful for him I would think.

I always carry a small plastic bag and some twine in my daypack. After tying on the tag, slip the plastic bag with the bottom opened over the license tag and do several wraps of twine, or even better, electrical tape. They take up very little room in you pack. Make it part of your gutting kit along with the plastic gloves and such.

When you have to punch out the month, date and time of kill....., how "easy" would it be to re-use the tag???? Sure, looking at the deer from a distance, to see a tag is one thing, to have a warden walk up and start reading the dates/times..., now that is a different story. If someone would try and "re-use" a tag that is dated/timed.., I would love to be there and listen to him explain the day/time discrepancy to a warden. Anyone foolish enough to try and re-use a tag that has the month-day-time cut out of it.., boy that person deserves to be busted.

This is not even a valid gripe about the new tags. I am not a fan of them either, but they work, (yup, used one last weekend), and if they save a few bucks and put it back in the resource.., good deal.

I'm glad all you guys can point out how you used a tag already this year and so have I, but it only makes me hate them more.

As far as lawdog goes I just think we have everything from young kids and rookies to know-it-all veterans like yourself and we owe it to the new guys to help them out when they are brave enough to seek out advice on how to be legal without throwing it back in their face with comments like "look it up yourself or search last week's thread"(maybe some people don't sit in front of the screen all day like you must). Let's just be a little more receptive to decent questions because that's what makes this forum interesting.

PS I was only daydreaming about the metal tags and I did realize and state how it probably wasn't economically viable.

One thing that does chap me though is that we do all the things right and the dweeb behind the counter at the gas station never comes to even verify you have a deer when you register. Like my dad once said "For all you know I've got an elephant in the pickup!"

That's no kidding about the people at the gas station! I've never had them look. When I used to register deer at the bait store I worked at...I'd always go see their animal...but that's probably because I was interested and curious, plus I'd always ask them the details of how it all went down...kind of my way of hunting vicariously through them while I was at work. I suppose the gas station people are too busy keeping an eye on the pumps these days.

Bottom line is if someone wants to "beat" the system they will find a way to do it.

As far as the reusing I agree with what was said. You could only reuse it on the same day. For instance if you shot two deer, tagged one, took it in, registered it, gave it to somebody or stashed it somewhere, then took the tag off & put it on the other deer. It's a very remote chance & would still be very stupid & illegal.

I talked to a registration agent on Sunday afternoon & she used to always inspect the deer & really check them out. She said the DNR told her last year not to be so thorough, it wasn't necessary. She also said the rule changed last year, where you're not required to bring the deer with when you register it. I hadn't realized that & I usually read through the regs handbook cover to cover every August or September. I think we all knew plenty of places that never checked them anyway, many of which it was very intentional, so that anyone could come & register an elephant or whatever if they really wanted to.

I've registered deer for three years and it was never required by the DNR for me to physically see the deer. Of course I'd try to make my way out to see a nice buck or take a look at a kid's first deer and compliment him/her on the animal but in addition to the service of deer registration I was obligated to run a business. I would have gladly stayed outside and looked at every deer but I simply could not. So please don't rip on the 'kid' registering your deer in the future just because he/she didn't look at it. If you want them to see it so bad throw it on your shoulders and carry it inside?

I think the new tags are simple to use. they are great and I'm glad to see the DNR making the change.
