Quite a few duck and waterfowl species are in the openings in the ice on the Metro Lakes, but the oddest bird I have seen is a hen turkey stopping traffic on Portland between 22nd and 23rd in South Minneapolis.  Then I hear that there is a known small flock already established inside the city on the near south side and this one is not so odd.  Wild turkeys are going commensal it seems!

Turbans.  That’s what those birds are. ;)

Saw our first loon on the Miss last weekend and now have a couple of screaming on the pond I’m turkey hunting by.  Pretty small water for loons but it is water.  Open edges and black as can be in the middle.

I wish I knew my bird songs better.  I’m hearing calls that I have no idea what they are.  So many birds they could be almost anything.

Last fall there was one standing in the middle of France Ave, by the cemetery.

Holy eye opener. Canoed 3rd river today from Dixon to Winnie. Have always seen a few pelicans around but wow. Get away from the roads and prepare to be depressed if you are a fisherman. I would guess at least a 1000. They eat so much they can't even fly, what you see me holding is fish they puked up so they could fly away from canoe. Hundreds and hundreds of beautiful walleye. I doubt many make it up the river. I saw this in squaw lake this week also on Popple river. If you want to see first hand destruction of fish population, canoe one of these northern itasca rivers around Winnie, Dixon, bowstring, round lakes in the next week. I think we may have a problem that needs to be delt with. NOW, let the social media arguments commence!!
Hold my beer.

Pelicans gotta eat too.  They’ll move on but this is one of those years the planets may be aligning in a tough way for some spawning runs.  I’ll go out on a limb and say if they were eating mostly suckers nobody would be too upset.

I HATED to see the cormorants hang around my place for 3-4 days; haven’t even seen one in the past 3 springs.  But I enjoyed all the ducks that were eating small fish and crayfish for several weeks.  I had to kinda sigh and realize my inconsistency on that perspective.

I tried nectar, and it worked one year, but not since.  Mine kind of turned into a sticky mess and attracted more bees than anything. Good to hear the Orioles are down by you now, I’m 100 miles north of you but the jelly is out. Are hummingbirds on about the same schedule as Orioles?

usually a couple weeks behind so they will be here soon. i like to put out grape jelly for the orioles and i just mix 1/4 cup sugar with 1 cup water for the hummer feeders. the grape jelly usually gets hit hard once the family of orioles has hatched.

I put out the hummer feeder and got one right away.  Then an oriole came to it, so I put out an oriole feeder....  and some grape jelly in a saucer, garnished with dried meal worms

Also saw a flash of something that looked like a grosbeak.   had a white stomach with a big red patch on the throat.   Only saw it for like 2 seconds so didn't get a good look before it flew off.

Tomorrow going to check the trail for bluebells....

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
