OK this outdated thread and Aldi's thread got me to thinkin!!!!!!!!!!:D and NO the fire dept isn't on the way boar!!!!!!:P opinions on generic food purchases...................

personally there are certain products I will absoluetly not buy generic. things like katchup,  chips peanut butter just to name a few. things like pepper, salt sugar I can handle buying generic. then there I products that I look for exclusively that I purchase cause there made in Minnesota. land o lakes, bongaards wild rice to name a few. fortunately I built stainless steel equipment for the food and beverage industry and got to know these customers so I support them also.

I sure save a lot buying generic spices in bottles...(Dried) depending on what it is. Like ol' Smurfer said, the staples, salt, pepper, sugar flour, pasta  etc. Anything else, no. I've tried. Doesn't work for me. I get to likin' something, I want the same thing.

I buy generic commodity items for sure.  Heinz ketchup is the only way to go.  Generic toilet paper...need I say more gets a thumbs down.  I also turn into Rainman at the store.  I can scan four brands and pick out the chepest one in 1/10th of a second, it's an art :)

(congrats guys, we didn't derail this thread yet...although I wanted to comment on more stainless steel stuff from Smurf but I decided not to :)  )  I's learnin'

smurf-  I made a dried jalepeno crushed thing about a month ago.  Holy Cow does it take a lot of peppers to make a little of that stuff!  Think of the biggest case of ground shrinkage deer hunting or cold weather swimming shinkage times ten.  Fun to do, of course I smoked em first and they were left over from something so they didn't go to waste.

Back to the generic conversation...man is it cold outside here!  Ooops!  Back to generics.

Since having septic so long and almost always use that eco freindly easily biodegradable "fine grain sandpaper" .....treated myself to some sort of premium northern ultra super duper soft one time...   and had serious breakthrough issues........ever since back to the sandpaper. What's the topic again?.

generic drugs I think?  No offense to kids that have it but my sister who works in the field says I don't have ADHD.  I was pretty happy when she told me.  She then said, "but you have something else."

Okay, back to union stainless steel bending...

I'll buy some generic items it just depends.  Generally if its a simple item with simple ingredients (sugar, flour, spices, oil, etc) then I'll go generic.  But if you look at something like chocolate chips you may see in the generics that they use "chocolate flavor" instead of anything resembling real chocolate.  That type of thing I'll say no to.

And of course no generic toilet paper.  If I'm that hard up and need to save a few bucks I'll just go pull a few strips of bark off the pine tree out back and use that.  It would feel about the same and leave you with a nice pine scent.  Only thing to be mindful of is the pine pitch as you don't want that stuff gluing your backside shut.

Does generic milk come from generic cows? smileys-cow-027148.gif

I'm not even gonna ask where my buttermilk comes from .  I'm not a big shopper,  only stop for stuff needed now. I'll quickly scan the house brand and name brand, but the one thing that stood out of taste and price was cubs brand of bone in ham, for something cheaper (especially meat) it was really good, hard to beat.

My old neighbors used to by their steaks from the guys knocking on doors, after seeing how gray in color they were I  told myself don't ever buy generic beef anyhow. .

I do buy the Cub brand in TP and Spagettie sauce among others.  Their spagettie sauce won a state wide contest one time as to best taste.  Trial and error on that stuff.  Costco and Sam's club have their own "brand Name" but they are usually pretty good.  Walmart has "shoppers value" brand.  Lot of that is not that great but the salt and pepper is fine LOL.  So I've tried it and use some and not others.  Cereal is something I dont buy generic at all.  Tried a couple of times and both times bad.  So I guess we all have to do the trial and error and when we find something we like we can save money.  good luck.

I make up my own concoction for sqetti sauce. kraft use to have a box called spaghetti dinner, there tough to find now. I usually get the schillings spaghetti seasoning packet, add the hamb, I also love to add itialian sausage to it, tomato juice, tomato paste garlic, garlic salt, chili powder and Heinz 57 steak sauce and let simmer. igrow some of my own seasonings so I like to add a pinch of basil, savory, oregano couple others I cant think of!

I used to make my own also Smurfy.  Kind of like you but I always added some bone-in pork country ribs to it for the meat and extra flavor.  Now you got me thinking off making some again [If I can remember it all LOL,].  Ya, homemade beats any brands.  good luck.

Generic Cereal is fine - My bro-in-law works as a purchaser for Malt-o-meal (now owned by post).  But the cereal in the bag is the EXACT same stuff as the stuff in the box.  More for the ALDI thread, but that's another thing you can get for $1.50 cheaper there - and it's the exact same thing.

One thing I don't like generic is canned soups - gotta go with Campbells for cooking. Especially Cream of anything.  Campbells cooks-up smooth in recipes, I find the generic brands stay lumpy.
