Wife wants a new truck. Suggestions?

Recommended Posts

My wife wants to get rid of her 07 silverado and she is wanting a 2014 f150 XLT. I would prefer to wait until the new 15' F150 is out because I like the looks and new tech. But there are excellent deals to be had on the 14's so I we are kinda torn. Any ideas of what kinda prices these 15's are gonna actually cost? I see the retail is about $350-3000 more depending on the model. I would think they would have to keep pricing competitive with Dodge and Chev. I would like to also here experiences with the 15 Chev Silverado. I am a chev guy but she has turned to the dark side..

I bought a new F150-XLT supercrew in June. Have been very happy with the truck. Comfortable, decent mileage (unless your pulling a 21ft fiberglass boat), very nice ride. This is my first Ford and I would definitely buy one again! Don't know if it matters, but I did buy the V-6 ecoboost. This truck has plenty of get up and go. That's my 2c

The 2014 F150s have had the same incentive packages for about two months now. I think we'll see them get better in the next few months. I may pick one up ahead of the new model year, but I'm going to wait awhile.

Yeah thats kinda what I was thinking. Once they have the 15's on the lot there will be bargain basement prices, unfortunately my wife is growing pretty impatient with her current truck.

That 2.7 is intriguing. I'm sure it will get incredible mileage, but I'm somewhat skeptical buying a truck with a totally new engine.

I bought a 2013 f150 last January the rebates and incentives were crazy stupid low. Couldn't pass it up. Could of had a 2014 for 6 to 8 thousand more but didn't have the color I wanted and 6 to 8 thousand more>

I just got done shopping for a new truck and purchased a new 2014 Chev 1500 4 x 4 Lt-LT-1 with the All Star package included. I have only had the Chevy for 2 days but so far, like how it rides and it sure is quiet. Also like how it is all set up and the options I have.

I did take a hard long look at the Ford XLT Lariat but I decided to stay away from their Eco boost motor. I had heard from a guy who tows his race trailer and he gest 6mpg with it. The Ford dealer I dealt with said yes, that's about what you will get with that motor. I said how about my wheeled fish house or my boat, he said plan on 6mpg.

I then asked how the 5.0 would do with towing and he said, maybe 1 up to possibly 2 more miles per gallon, just not acceptable for me.

I had them figure out a final price with trade and then found out if I paid for it and did not finance with Ford, I would lose a discount and I would have to pay more for the truck since I( did not finance with Ford. I believe you can get the discount from Ford if you finance so much for a minimum of either 3 or 6 months and then after that time, you can pay it off so you do not lose that additional discount. The Ford rode pretty nice also.

I really liked the Ford truck but the mileage really pushed me away.

Checked out the Dodge Ram truck also, that would have been my choice for numerous reasons over the Ford.

Ford, Chev and Dodge all have great deals on the 14's and they are going fast, To get what you want, I would get on it asap so you can get the truck in the color you would like if that makes a difference and all the options you would like.

I did not check out the Toyota's but one may also find some deals there also.

If you go the route of a Ford with a eco boost motor with the turbo's, I would find a dealer with the lifetime turbo warranty, it is a dealer warranty and not a Ford warranty offered by a few dealers.

As far as financing, Ford wanted 5.9% for the truck, Chevy was less. I got my financing through another option for 2.24 and today I found out from my State Farm agent, I could have got it for 1.7% or maybe even less so there are some great financing options out there, check them all out. I may redo the financing to see if I can get it for less than 1.5%. That's darn cheap interest.

I pull a 19ft full windshield boat and a 16 ft flat nose fish house and have never seen anything close to 6mpg with my EcoBoost. Always right around 12 to 14 pulling and 20 plus highway. This is not something "I heard from a guy".this is real life experience. Same as I got with my 5.3 gmc. Only real difference I notice between the 2 was the gmc was shifting all the time going up the slightest hills and the ford just goes. No more having to shift it out of overdrive.

Harv makes a good point about checking with your insurance company, last time we bought a new Chevy, the insurance company kicked in an extra $750 over and above dealer / manufacture incentives.

As far as the EcoBoost goes, that's one impressive setup and I wouldn't hesitate to make one of those my next truck. My buddy bought one a couple years ago, we took it out west snowmobiling, we pulled a 28 foot, 4 place enclosed snowmobile trailer, 3 guys, 3 mountain sleds and all the gear, that truck had no problem getting 11 mpg running 75 - 80 mph down the interstate, smooth and most of all, very quiet.

Go drive them all. Let her drive them too. Get what you like and what fits your budget. The top manufacturers all have good and bad points. You can narrow it down with a test drive and then see what fits your needs. Deals are good now but inventory is shrinking so act soon.

The salesguy at a Ford dealership told me this is what I could expect from this motor along with another fellow I know. That's all I can go by, if a dealer tells me this, it concerned me. Maybe he was lying to me.

I was all ready to go with a Ford or at least it was one at the top of the list but when he told me the mileage would be that low for towing my wheel house,, I decided to not go with that truck.

Not slamming the Ford at all, I have owned them in the past and was very happy with the performance. As I said, I was all ready to go with the Ford truck and honestly when he said I would get mileage that low, that was a deal breaker. Sounds to me like the salesperson has no clue.

Pulling my boat to Devils lake and back, we got 15mpg in a 2013 EcoBoost, doing 70-80mph. Never even knew it was back there. My 02 F150 only got 11mpg on the same trip last year.

I think that Ford salesman didnt want you to buy a Ford.

Telling you it would get 6mpg makes me wonder if he's pushing to sell a superduty. When I was truck shopping last summer, I was between a f150 EB, and a ram 1500. But, I see them all over, so I opted for something different, a Titan, which I love, and yet see everywhere. Fuel mileage was not a concern for me. It's a truck. And not my everyday driver. That's the cars job. But I decided not f150 EB, solely on the grounds I did not want a full size truck with a v6. Regardless of twin turbos. Had they put those turbos into a 5.4, well, I'd prolly be driving a ford

Congrats on the truck Harvey, you should be happy with it. I would not have bought a truck from a salesman or dealership that had that kind of misinformation and sales approach anyway. I had that problem to a degree when I was going to buy a car for my daughter. Visited the Honda dealership, had her test drive the car, she loved it, the salesman told us to come back when we are ready to buy? I told him we would like the car and I was ready to write a check for the whole thing. He told me he had another appointment and to come back later in the day. We went to another Honda dealer, were treated like a customer should be treated and bought the car on the spot. That a$$ clown that you were dealing with didn't know squat about trucks and blatantly lied to you about mileage.

The GM's have come a long way in the last 2 years. That'll be a good truck! The important thing to remember when you are comparing trucks is that it takes fuel to make power. The Ecoboost is 10hp more and 40 ft/lbs of torque more. The GM L83 hits peak torque (towing power) at 4,100rpms vs 2,000rpms.

You won't get 6mpg with the Ecoboost....it's 8! smile I have about 5,000 miles towing 6,000 pounds and average between 8-10mpg. Mileage variation (regardless of trailer) is directly related to speed (60mph vs 75+). Towing a boat is 15-18. I towed a trailer to Texas and back that was a 6x14 or so open trailer with 4' sides. Not sure on weight, I'd guess 3,000 pounds, but that was 15mpg average.

Just got back from working on a relatives farm for a couple weeks. They have two 2013 Ford pickups, one Eco boost and one 5.4. I drove each one frequently and both were nice. Take it for what it's worth but both had 12000 miles or more and each one showed exactly 13.6 as average mileage for the life of the truck as he told me they don't waste time ever resetting the gauge.

What kind of crazy deals are we talking here? I see you can get $12,000 off list price at a ford dealer, what else can a guy negotiate? I'm not a good negotiator and I know the salesman has to make a living but I want a fair deal also.

What Chevy motor would be comparable to the Ford 3.7 Econo boost??

Might have to pull the trigger on a new truck, soon!

Thx,

Mike

I checked with Ford, Ram and Chevy, they all had discounts from $8,000 to $13,000 depending on the models and the packages included in the purchase. Friend purchased a new Ford Latiat at one dealer and got a lifetime warranty on the turbo's on his Ford, this is a dealer incentive and not a Ford incentive. Chev also has a free oil change and tire rotation for the first 2 years or 24,000 miles at any dealer. I believe the max amount of times for free is either 4 or 6.

Then some give you other discounts and most have free Sirrus and or OnStar for 3-6 months.

Then check with your insurance company for rates and also check with the insurance company for financing. My Sate farm rep told me I could get from 1.5-1.7% interest with a better than average credit rating. I am at 2.24 but I may check out State farms interest and do a loan request and see how cheap I can get the insurance.

With a Ford purchase, if you want the lowest price, you would need to finance with Ford. if not the total, I believe like $8,000 for 4 months or so and then you can pay it off financing through another option. If you do not finance with Ford, you will pay more for the truck, so the dealer explained to me. You lose one incentive for not financing through Ford.

Each dealer also has an incentive other than what the MFG is offering. I know where I purchased my truck, free car washes for as long as I own this truck.

yes, some very good deals out there right now. But, some models are going fast so if you think you may go and check any Mfgers out, do it asap as they are selling them.

I also purchased an extended warranty up to 120,000 miles from bumper to bumper as I thought the price made it a no brainer. I typically do not purchase those extended warranties but this was too good to turn down.

I do know the Chevy incentives from the Mfg go off Nov 3rd, but they should have a new one, but who knows what that will be. I would guess depending on what they have left for 2014 inventory. From Sept to Oct, the Chevy incentive really did not change that much.

I am also sure as soon as the 14's are gone, to purchase a 2015 will be much more. Unless you wait for Oct of 2015 when the 16's are coming out.

Harvey, just a little tip for you that I learned. When Ford advertises that you must wait 3 or 4 months to get the credit, that is actually not true. You must keep your loan with Ford for that amount of time for them to receive credit, but once you sign the papers, you can take your loan to whoever you want. I found this out after waiting the 3-4 months and then financing with my Bank. When I told them about this wait period, they are the ones that told me that I could have re-financed with them the next day.

It would have actually saved me around $200 if I recall since the rate that Ford finances at was WAY higher than I was able to get.

Guess they did not tell me that. He said I had to wait for that period before I could refinance with another option. Guess maybe he does not know what he was telling me. A buddy of mine went the Ford route and also said you had to finance for a certain time before you could redo it with another. These salesmen need to get together so all are on the same page.

I would agree Ford's financing was way high. I thought it was crazy as I found others that were almost 4% less.

Depending on what you are looking for NOW is the time to buy a Silverado. as much as $9500 off MSRP. The selection is great but they will be drying up soon.

Also agree about the new ford. Nice truck with good MPG claims but what is insurance going to run? I think they also lack something in the ride department too.

What am I not getting? The Ford loan has a pre-payment penalty? They hold some rebate back for 4 months? Once you own the truck and have paid for it, how do they stop you from paying off the loan?

There is no penalty on the customer. I believe for the Ford dealer to get "credit" from the ford credit company the customer needs to continue to finance through ford credit for a certain amount of time. I did this for the minimum time period a few years ago because the dealer asked me to. So I financed for a couple of months and then paid it off. He was honest and up front about it and I got them to throw in that windshield chemical sealant or what ever it is which is awesome by the way.

LET HER GET WHAT SHE WANTS!!! Otherwise you will hear about it every time she drives it and finds something she doesnt like. Tire noise, color, stereo quality, seats too hard, seats too soft,I cant see...blah blah blah.LOL Trust me, let her decide and then you wont have to listen to her B%*^^%TCH....(as much). It will be worth the extra money in a few less miles per gallon or whatever!
